The last time I was on this highway, I was 5 years old. I still remember the terror.

Wish I had a nickle for every time I've been over that pass. Its been widened since I was a boy. There were No turn outs then. I grew up in Colorado.

GREAT JOB! Thank you. Others I have seen are more like a time lapse. Another video I can show friends of my insane morning 19 August 2019 (in a car). I'm afraid of heights. It was good I had the road almost to myself, as I went VERY SLOW. But I had to get to Silverton from Delta. Wasn't going around to Durango.

We're heading out there in 3 weeks. Looking forward to it. Flying into Montrose and then doing Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, Sedona and finishing up in Scottsdale for 3 days. Cool music choice.

beautiful but bloody scary to drive especially in bad weather or at night
@2002ret7 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want to drive through in the rain. The water cascades from above in some areas (3:05 - 3:35) easily braking windshields with rocks that fall from above.

This road traumatized me as a kid and even though I live in Colorado I cannot drive here, it is just too horrifying.

I just drove into Ouray yesterday, but didn't have enough time to go down to Silverton. Now I am regretting it!

This is not near as scary as I expected from what everybody has said. Is this the one going to the town from the opposite direction? If so I've actually been on that highway and didn't even realize! 😂 that's funny. Is that the same highway bear creek falls is on? I see another waterfall too and now I want to go back there again this year. Thanks for that! 😂 I went last year too. I live in Colorado Springs but MAN to I love to explore this beautiful state. That's nothing compared to Rampage Range Road in Springs. Much more narrow, gravel, and just as high falloffs. Piece of cake this one is! Can't wait!

Agree. Colorado is a beautiful state. On a clear day, this road is spectacular. Driving the same road in the winter or during a storm is a different story.

Yeah its all fun and games until the greyhound driver is drifting the bus and the back is hanging off the edge of a cliff while he's sliding.

This was the most best ride as far as on mountain roads... I loved your music that carried the drive just perfectly... who was maning the camera, it was just perfect... and yes by the way, what's that bike that cut across?! Hello from flat Indiana
@2002ret2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The camera was mounted on the helmet, which is usually the best spot to avoid vibration.

Coming out of salt lake going south that mountain is a good one. It's steeper and a much longer drive atleast the part with big sweeping turns and tight hairpins.

Looks gorgeous. Thanks for posting. Is that camera mounted on your helmet? If so, you seem to always be staring straight ahead...I'd be looking EVERYWHERE! And 25mph speed limit?!?!?! Seriously??? Wow. I'd be double that easily through there.
@2002ret10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Yes, the camera was on the helmet. I wanted the video to show the beauty of the road, (and not necessarily my riding abilities), so I kept my head as steady as possible and maintained a safe, steady speed.

I doubt that you could do that, with the cars in front of you. ESPECIALLY if I was in front of you. I was on the cliff side at 7 AM Monday 19 August 2019. When I got to the TOP of this section, only one car came up behind me when I slowed down for a deer crossing the road (hairpin type of turn). There were only two cars coming down during that time. In some areas going south (up) it is 15 m.p.h. and I didn't have any problems going over 10 m.p.h. But then consider, I'm a Senior Citizen, who is afraid of heights. A 22 year old man, traveling it at night Saturday night prior to my trip, died after going over the edge kdvr.com/2019/08/19/grand-junction-man-killed-after-driving-off-red-mountain-pass/ closer to the top of the pass. The Highway is much longer before where this video starts. It's a gorgeous ride.

2002ret how far are the drops I thought there were laws about having Gard rails on highways do they ever close to bad weather
@2002ret7 жыл бұрын
The drops are hundreds of feet in some places. There isn't enough room for the guard rails. Besides, the snow plows need to push to snow over the edges during winter. Here's an interesing article from the Durango Herald: durangoherald.com/articles/74935-highway-to-hell

top out at 5:28 in I pulled a 690B John Deere track hoe to this very spot in October of 2007 to clear a slide that completely blocked the pass.I read in the comments that the speed limit was too low,,meet me when I am 68 feet long around a hairpin curve backing up to make it around and you will rethink the speed limit.
