The series definitely is for a niche audience, but for those who click with it, it clicks HARD. The main characters are entangled in a complete mess of a situation with their emotions for each other all over the place, for example the female lead is simultaneously in love with and also wanting to k*ll the antagonist. There are people who enjoy this trope. It's a stronger version of Jude-Cardan's love-and-hate relationship.

I liked Maven so much better after the betrayal! Goes from the typical sad-boy second ML to actually a mastermind who just played them all! So good! I didn't continue the books because I don't really like Mare's personality, but I would have loved to have seen a redemption arc with Maven! Or if Cal wasn't a romantic interest, have Mare and Maven have a well written friends-almost lovers to enemies to lovers plot! I am a sucker for redemption plots though like in Tangled: The Series or Caraval/Once Upon a Broken Heart

Let's talk about why Maven's character was unbelievably tragic, and this entire series was actually psychological horror disguised as YA distopia. It is technically more sci-fi, but it reads like fantasy. Spoilers ahead: Elara Merandus is a terrible person. Her powers are a lot more than just reading a mind. She can manipulate it on a fundamental level, sometimes without the person even knowing she is there. It isn't discussed in detail, but she was like Evangeline, raised and chosen to be the next queen and marry King Tiberius VI. Unfortunately for her, Tiberius fell in love with Cal's mother, another silver noble, and married her instead. Elara was PISSED. She psychologically tortured Corianne for months, tried to get Cal aborted, and made Corianne think she was going crazy. So Cori hired a guard, the Arven trainer guy, to keep her safe, but Arven dude was secretly working for Elara. Everyone thinks Corianne is going crazy and is being paranoid, Elara drives her to commit suicide and finally gets to marry Tiberius. So she becomes Queen and has Maven, but he is still the younger son, so she has to make him perfect if she wants to make him King. Cal was naturally good at all the princely stuff, and everyone loved him. Maven didn't learn to walk quick enough for Elara, so she forced her way into his mind and puppeted his body until he could do it himself. When Maven was a child, he was afraid of the dark, so Elara removed his fear. He was also super loyal to Cal, who was apparently a great big brother, so Elara tried to remove Maven's love for his father and brother. Love is said to be difficult to remove. It doesn't go away, just gets twisted. So she turned Maven's familial love into hate. He did, in fact, fall in love with a red named Thomas, whom he then accidentally burned to death. He felt so much grief and guilt that he went to his mother to have her remove his love and grief from his mind. She tried but only managed to twist it into obsession. The same thing later happens with Mare. By the time the series starts, he is a twisted perversion of the sweet person he was supposed to be and has little to no control over his own life and thoughts. His feelings for Mare throughout the first book DO grow into something genuine. This is why he is more upset about executing her than Cal. Elara had never bothered to remove his feelings for Mare, as she viewed them as insignificant. Maven is angry with Mare for blaming him, says she never would have seen him or cared for him if he hadn't crafted that story or persona, and still choose Cal over him, as everyone always does. Mare denies this, tells him that while he was only pretending she and Thomas made him see reds as people, Mare genuinely began to see silvers as people because of him. She saw the complexity of feelings she thought were real. She had long since decided that kissing Cal was a mistake and misplaced affection. That is why she had ghosted him. I believe she tells Maven "I thought you were better than him." Which reels Maven because not even his mother has ever thought he was better than Cal in any way. He asks if she is choosing Cal anyway. Mare says no way, why would I choose either of you, to Maven I was a pawn, and to Cal I was a lost damsel to be saved. You can both go screw yourselves. Then she spits in his face. All three of those characters proceed to have frequent back slides in character development, all centered on this messed up relationship. They don't super find out Maven was a mind puppet until later, so they think it was all him. Maven never recovers. I am writing a whole fic about how what Elara did would destroy a person. Gah. If Coriane had lived, she would have seen Mare similarly to how Cal did at first, I think, and just tried to help her. She might have been swayable.

This book was DNF for me. Too much tell and not enough show. Great summery so I know how it ended. Feedback, I think taking 5 seconds to explicitly explain the difference between silvers and reds would have been helpful.

this is a good summary but am i the only one that knows that mare ISNT white? she literally describes herself as brown skinned AND the author confirmed she wrote her as "mixed race"

i think that's just a result of people will remember characters as their own race unless their cultural background as a different one is significant to the character/plot. unless there's like outside influence as well like fan art, merch, visual adaptations, cover art, etc. then those tend to over ride whatever mental image you would have held in your head.

Um I just read the first book and this is news to me, I feel like I would remember them describing her as brown skinned, I even searched the book for the word 'brown' and nothing came up but it got me to where she compares her sister's hair to hers and her sister having glossy red hair again indicates white to me. Also searched skin and the closest we get is her noticing Walsh is tanned and saying it must mean she's from the same place as her. The idea of her being mixed feels very much like an afterthought then, that was even possibly added in future books cos I would have expected one of her parents to be described as poc which would have given me that mental image of her being mixed too. With mentions of red blushing and that they were successfully using white paste on her face to get her looking silver, at least in the first book it only comes out as her being a tanned white person.

@@lase.o i did recently read the graphic novel "red school" from 2020 which is an official crossover work and the art they do there definitely depicts mare as a kind of middling brown. I haven't read any of the novels (hence why i watched a summary) but with that information it does sound like her being at least mixed is a thought added afterwards.

This is so fun, but so many inaccuracies! 1. She doesn’t have earrings in each ear from her brothers, they could only afford one pair of earrings each so she takes one and her sister takes the other. So she has like three earrings in one ear, all of them different colors from different brothers. Her sister’s hand doesn’t get shot, it gets crushed. Still very unusable. When she touches the control box and the lights come on, she actually has no idea that she affected it at all. She is very surprised to learn she has powers later in the book. That is as far as I have watched…. Not sure I can keep going because I will find the need to keep posting, sorry it’s who I am. 😂😂❤

5:18 I don't think Elaine and Sonya were ever together romantically, and they were absolutely not engaged. Elaine and Evangeline are a couple. Elaine is engaged to Ptolemus Samos, Evangeline's brother. It was kind of a lavender wedding situation, since everyone was still expected to produce heirs. Evangeline would have the royal heri, Cal's kid, Elaine would have the Samos heir, Ptolemus' kid, Elaine and Evangeline would be together with their husbands chill about it, and Elaine and Evangeline would have no problem with Ptolemus and Cal getting mistresses. Also the only cousin of Maven mentioned was a man, I think. Started with an S? He was brutal, mentioned in a duel in like the first chapter.

Watching this makes me remember how viscerally disturbing some of the scenes in this book actually were. I almost wish they leaned even more into it. Dislocating Farley's shoulder was practically nothing. Ptolemus survives the attack, is enraged that his sister was endangered, (They have a very close relationship. Scarlet Witch&Quicksilver vibes.) and immediatley murders Tristan by ramming him through with a metal bar and watching him choke on his own blood, and Evangeline has to pull him back before he murders the others. They don't just dislocate Farley's arm, they freeze her blood. Mare describes it as tiny red fractals poking out as the frozen blood shreds through her veins and skin. Cal isn't just standing there uncomfortably, he is the one who orders the torture, and what type of torture. He isn't happy about it, but he was the initiator. Maven tried to stop it, though just for Mare's sake.

I liked the first book when I read it... then I saw a sneak peek of the second one and I was like: "why is Mare insufferable?" so I never read the rest, even though I was invested because the potential was there, I just thought they ruined mare (and quite a few reviews and commentaries agreed so I spared myself).
