George, thanks for taking the time to correct the people who said that Stewart Copeland played drums on this. Manu doesn't get enough credit as it is. Thanks for clearing that up. Stewart did high-hat overdubs on a couple songs from So, and Red Rain is not one of them.
@davido59257 ай бұрын
Stewart did play high-hats on this song although the part wasn't yet assigned to a song it was done before Red Rain was recorded but it is indeed him playing it, it was just an idea Peter had and so he asked Stewart to play it and he later incorporated it into Red Rain as he often did when writing songs things weren't always done traditionally or in traditional sequence of events. It wasn't until some time later that Copeland was told it was that mystery track he laid down that was used on Red Rain. Also Jerry Marotta played the drums on Red Rain not Manu although Manu did play on other tracks on So including Sledge Hammer and I LOVE Manu, he is incredible and his playing on RR live is other worldly!

Congratulations George, for me this is one of the most fun and rhythmic drum pieces, which not everyone can play, a legacy of Master Stewart Copeland.

The line up for Red Rain Jerry Marotta - drums Chris Hughes - Linn programming Stewart Copeland - hi-hat Tony Levin - bass guitar David Rhodes - backing vocals Daniel Lanois - guitar Peter Gabriel - vocals, piano, CMI, Prophet

Luis Daniel Ibarrola yes that’s correct for the studio version. Obviously this is the live version “Secret World” which has Manu’ Katche’ on drums 🥁

Wow great cover!! If you can though it would be great if you could do one of the studio version too just compare them!

Also just to be that guy but are you in the process of replacing your Paistes with Zildjians or your Zildjians with Paistes? :
@georgelilly45884 жыл бұрын
Bill Day ok I can do that. Studio version clearly has a lot more layers going on. That’s why I chose this because it’s just Manu Katche’ playing live. I’ll give it a shot though

@@georgelilly4588 this recording sounds like a studio version. (excellent) Manu is very powerful live, creates a different sound dynamic. Tighten heads up a bit and slightly less muffle, work the cymbals like you're playing live and you'll be surprised. This song (and Manu's style) is great to play using long heavy timbale sticks, easy to pop rim shots and maybe crack a cymbal well done!

George, very tight cover! Every articulation is very crisp. Have you thought of doing a cover of the original with Stewart Copeland's hihat part? That'd be pretty cool to watch.

Craig Dubin are you talking about the version on “SO”? I thought that was Manu’ also?? But I’m on it 😎

@@georgelilly4588Yup! It was So and Manu played the drum line but stewart was brought in the studio for the hihats

@@georgelilly4588 George, when I bought it in 86, there was a story about it. Wiki has a reference here, I'm sure we could find other references to it, but I"m sure Red Rain is Stew: Opening with the shakuhachi bamboo flute,[23] Gabriel uses a prominent horn section inspired by the music of American soul singer Otis Redding. Wayne Jackson, who toured with Redding in the 1960s, plays the horn on the track.[27] Problems playing this file? See media help. Gabriel wanted the album to "crash open at the front" and despite disliking "metal" percussion instruments, he was persuaded by Lanois to allow The Police's Stewart Copeland to play cymbals and hi-hat on its opener, "Red Rain".[7][28]
@georgelilly45885 жыл бұрын
Craig Dubin ok understood!! It certainly sounds like Copeland. The “SO” version is cool but different. I’ll tag ya when I get a handle on it 👊🏻🤙🏻
