So many great lyrics in this song, all pointed at the Lunatic Fringe "You're in hiding And you hold your meetings" (KKK), "But I'm on guard this time Against your final solution" (Nazism). But the one that hits me most and I know had to be influenced by John Lennon's death which happened while he was writing and recording this - "We can hear the footsteps out along the walkway" which makes reference to Lennon being murdered on the walkway to his apartment. I get goosebumps every time I hear that line. Just a fantastic song with a great message that we will not let hate rule....Add Harem Scarem's "Change The World" as another Canadian band with a fantastic song that has a message of love not hate.

Another song from Tom Cochrane - "Big League" a song about a young hockey player killed in a motor vehicle and later released song as a charity single for a real life accident - On April 6, 2018, sixteen people were killed and thirteen were injured when a northbound coach bus struck a westbound semi-trailer truck that blew through a stop sign near Armley, Saskatchewan, Canada. The driver of the semi-truck had failed to yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335. The semi-trailer was travelling at a speed of approximately 100 km/h (62 mph). Most of the deceased and injured were players from the Humboldt Broncos, a junior ice hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, which plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Oh guys, there are so many great Canadian bands and singer/songwriters. This is not a definitive list but quite representative of artists up to about 1995. I grew up listening to most of these. You know the biggies like Rush, The Guess Who and Neil Young, and you've heard a bit of the underrated rock trio Triumph and April Wine (Roller and so much more), but also check out Bachman Turner Overdrive (Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman's kickass rock group - you've likely heard of their monster 1974 hit Takin' Care of Business), Gordon Lightfoot (Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, Carefree Highway etc.), The Tragically Hip (Little Bones, Three Pistols, New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Ahead By a Century, Fifty Mission Cap - enjoy the rabbit hole), The Band (originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins then Bob Dylan - The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Cripple Creek etc.), the now little known Klaatu (one of my favourites, rumoured in the late 1970s to be The Beatles reformed - do the full studio versions of Calling Occupants, Sub Rosa Subway, True Life Hero and Anus of Uranus off their debut album 3:47 EST), Saga (from my humble little hometown of Oakville, Ontario - On the Loose and Wind Him Up), The Kings (also from my hometown of Oakville - their super catchy party hit This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide), Five Man Electrical Band (social commentary mega hit Signs), Bryan Adams (anything off the Reckless or Cuts Like a Knife albums), Blue Rodeo, Loverboy and the criminally virtually unknown - outside of Canada - Max Webster (Kim Mitchell's original band - the super high energy and quirky lyrics of High Class In Borrowed Shoes plus Hangover, Let Go The Line, A Million Vacations, Oh War!, Gravity and On the Road.) I know this is a lot but you asked for Canadian band/song suggestions. Keep up the great work. I'm always looking to see if you guys are reacting to 1960s, '70s and '80s rock songs.

I remember when this came out, in about 1982. It rocked then, and it was meaningful then, but it's much more meaningful now. I bought the record on vinyl LP back then, and I still have it. More on that a little later... The lyrics aren't kidding: "Lunatic Fringe/ We all know you're out there/ You're in hiding/ And you hold your meetings..." One of the real keys to what it's about comes a little later: "..'Cause you gotta blame someone/ For your own confusion/ We're on guard this time/ Against your Final Solution." That's a reference to the Nazi Party. They blamed all their problems on Jews and Bolsheviks, and their "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem" (THEIR PHRASE) was the death camps. Now the modern lunatic fringe is blaming their confusion on Muslims and immigrants, hoping to resurrect and use the fear and hate of the ignorant. This song is about how we must never let hate and fascism and totalitarianism again get a chance to take over society. "We can hear you coming/ No, you're not gonna win this time/ We can hear the footsteps/ Hey, out along the walkway..." Yet now, with donald trump and the rise of far-right hate cult thinking, we're teetering on the brink. The Republican Project 2025 is their plan to take permanent control of the US government, eliminating democracy in the name of donald trump. That's the Lunatic Fringe in 2024. Incidentally, there's a little-known bit missing. The last verse, in the record, says, "Lunatic Fringe/ We all know you're out there/ Can you feel the resistance?/ Can you feel the thunder?" And then the ambulance sound - which I suspect means the lunatics have detonated a bomb somewhere. But the original lyrics, printed on the record sleeve, were longer: "Lunatic Fringe/ We all know you're out there/ But in this new Dark Age/ There will still be light/ An eye for an eye/ Just before you go under/ Can you feel the resistance? / Can you feel the thunder?" Meaning, even with the lunatic fringe doing their worst, good people must resist, and fight back. They'll have their last gasp, do their last harm, just before they're eliminated, but we WILL RESIST, and win.
