I think what makes Darrow so likable as a protagonist (at least in the first trilogy) is his empathy and big heart. He is an extremely effective warlord but he doesn't inflict violence cruelly or senselessly, and he is constantly trying to see the best in people, even in his monstrous Gold adversaries.

Golden Son is by far the best of the original trilogy. A superbly strong Act II in a classic III act structure. I'd say the same for Dark Age for the second trilogy, though we're still waiting on that Act III. I remember reading the first book a few months after it came out, I really wasn't expecting much as it had been pegged as a young adult story with numerous people comparing it to Hunger Games. But I got hooked quick, think I read the whole thing in 2 nights which isn't common for me. I had assumed it would follow a formulaic path in that each book would focus on a new trial with set parameters that Darrow would break, but Golden Son boots right into dissuading that idea and builds one of the most well thought out sci fi worlds I've had the pleasure of reading.

I absolutely adore this series! One thing I haven't heard talked about much is how having the 1st trilogy being all single 1st POV made introducing the world, major players, friendships, etc easier to follow than multi 3rd person POV often found in other sci-fi/fantasy. When the world expands outward in the secondary trilogy I felt super grounded so I could appreciate everything that was going on better. Still enjoy many multi 3rd person POV but I think the 1st single person POV is underutilized on the adult side of the genre.

I love this series! The first book took some time for me to get into, but once I saw the the vision I had to keep going. The "trilogy" reads like a Greek Epic, it has war, growth, love, heartbreak, tragedy. The character grows so much from the first book to the third, and you're with him every step of the way. I was actually ecstatic to be there for the ride, despite the faults I found within the writing itself. Mainly, it does drag on a bit, not just in the first book but in all three, especially when in Morning Star I could predict what would happen from the first few chapters and had to slog through the middle. But boy, was it worth it! The ending completely makes up for it in my opinion. I've already picked up the next two in the series and look forward to them :)

I’m mainly a comic book/graphic novel collector, but with your awesome recommendations I’ve slowly been delving into the world of novels with quality starting off. So far I’ve purchased 7 Books of The Wheel of Time, All of The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, Project Hail Mary, Rage of Dragons, Game of Thrones, and the Dune Series. Can’t wait to dive in all of these

This is my most re-read trilogy. Golden Son just gives me a huge amount of adrenaline while reading it... every time. Darrow and Sevro is just amazing.

Thank you Daniel for this videos! I have been a hardcore red rising fan since 2018, but only recently I have seen this series getting the recognition and popularity it deserves!

Hey Daniel you probably won’t read this but I wanted to thank you for all of your great recommendations. I just picked up The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne after finishing the cosmere because of your review and interview with John gwynne. I’ve already had my mind blown multiple times, so thank you!

I finished up the first book in this series (audiobook) a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. To hear that that one might be the *weakest* of them makes me very excited to read/listen to the rest. Thanks for the overview!

My wife bought me the entire series in 2018 I had no background about it or anything but I loved the series so much and was one of the things (with RF Kuang's Poppy War) which brought me back to regular reading of non-textbooks. ❤️

I read these books by chance while I was in prison and holy shit this series is unbelievably great! I've always wished this would become either a movie or series. Great characters, great battles, great emotion. Five Star review for sure!

Thanks Daniel, now I have one more saga to add to my already really huge TBR. A little compassion on my wallet, please? Since I follow this channel I went from 3 on the list to more than 60 TT

One of my favourite Sci-Fi series in anything, not just books. Enjoyed the first book, but from book 2 onwards, it just hits another level! Definitely worth adding to your reading list if you haven't done so already.

Omg I love that these books are getting more attention these days. They are SOOOOOO good. Also there is no conclusion yet, the 6th is still being written. If you do not like cliff hangers then read the first 3. It is a satisfying point to put it down until the 6th one comes out.

This is my favorite sci-fi series ever! The first book is great. Somewhat derivative and very Hunger Games meets Ender's Game, but still very good in it's own right. However, this series takes off in book 2. The world expands and the series takes on a life of it's own. The first trilogy culminates beautifully and would be excellent there, but the 2nd trilogy (2 books in now) just continues to deepen. Pierce Brown has earned my absolute trust and I will read everything he publishes from here out.
