This song brings back great and sad memories to me, When I was a young lad living at Lough Talt in Co Sligo. Ireland a lovely lady named Maggie Curley always sang that song at all the house parties we used to go to, great parties with plenty of Country Music and Fiddle's and the best of Country Songs, I always think that we the Irish brought Country Music to America, Listen to the Fiddle playing Blue Grass, that's Irish Music at it's best. Kind regards and Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone of you and may the Wind be always on your Back. From Alfie Deehan In the Field's of Athenry, Co.Galway, Ireland. ❤.

Lynn spent some growing up time in Grand Forks, North Dakota, considered to be part of the valley of the Red River of the North. We haven't forgotten you, Dear.

I remember listening to "Red River Valley" in the 50's Still a good song! The wife would not let me leave the valley, so we have been together for 40 years and it has been good. God Bless Her! Love is the Most Powerful Force I know of! The Red River Valley occupies 17,000 square miles. It is approximately 60 miles wide at its widest point and 315 miles long, from Lake Traverse at the Southern end to Lake Winnipeg at the Northern end.

Some people think this song refers to the Red River Valley in Texas and that the song must have been written by a Texan. But no, it refers to Manitoba's northern Red River Valley, and so was likely written by a Canadien. No one knows who wrote it, but it's origin is clearly from Canada. The song was known in at least 5 Canadien provinces before 1896, and has been traced as far back as the 1870's. Some speculate it may have been written during the 1870 Wolseley Expedition to Manitoba's northern Red River Valley.

This was my Grandfather's favorite song. He was the best! A fireman who fixed broken toys. He was funny, and charming. Everyone loved him. He was so sweet. He was my babysitter frequently. I only wish he could have stayed with us longer, as he passed away when I was 7, and he 67. My family, and a great many in the community felt this devestating loss. I'm 63, and his death seems as if it happened a very long yesterday ago. Love you forever, Grandad. 💖

I'm of an age where I remember Red River Rock by Johnny and the Hurricanes being close to the top of the UK pop charts in about 1959. I loved the record and still do, but I have only recently heard this song for the first time. As it also has the lyrics I now know that it is a sad love song, which gives me a completely new and different view of it. I guess I now prefer this version rather than the old instrumental.

A couple of years ago I saw a documentary about the life of Sir Ed Hillary, the famous kiwi who first conquered Mt Everest along with his Nepalese partner. At one point in the doco Ed, now an old man said that this was his favourite song and he sang a few lines while outside a Nepalese village.
