I remember my mom singing this song to me as a lullaby when I couldn’t get to sleep. I remember thinking this was a profoundly sad song as a child, and I would fall asleep as I quietly cried. As an adult I realize she sang this song because it reminded her of herself and my dad. They knew each other growing up through the Jehovah’s Witnesses and went to the same schools, but my dad was 4 years ahead of her. They only lasted a few years when my mom was a teen and my dad was in his early 20’s, but long enough to have me. I cry every time I hear this song.

i was 8yrs old when i first heard this song, my dad always play this song everyday and i memorized it even if i didn't understand what it meant, but little by little i realize it was a sad story of a girl and a man, the girl fell first but the man fell late when he realized that he truly loved the girl, 5yrs later after he return the girl was already married with his best friend. im 17 now and it was one of my fav song, and i kinda feel the girl from the song, im inlove with a guy 7yrs older than me im 17 and he was 24, he was my teacher, and im taking this opportunity to motivate myself to study i want him to notice me and be proud of me, but im not expecting anything and doing crazy stuff, he's going to be my inspiration...

I'm from Vietnam and I never heard this song before until 2023. But somehow it reminded me of my peaceful childhood memories with my grandparents. I was so sad and tormented by the lyrics, I even cried for Jimmy. I think people shouldn't blame him, he couldn't respond to the confession of a girl who was only 15 years old, this is really going too far I think (although I'm sure Jimmy already had the neighbor girl - Joni in his heart). Another thing that makes me want to blame Joni, why didn't she marry someone else but insisted on choosing John - Jimmy's best friend? This really breaks one's heart. Anyway, I love the melody and the voices of the two singers so much.
