Rummy was buried in the morning. I had the rare privilege of standing beside Ginger as they lowered the great horse into his grave (I worked at Aintree then) Joe

Simply put - Aintree will never see his like again. He jumped 150 fences there and never fell, In 1973 he beat the course record. On his second win , which was his finest race, he carried top weight. What an amazing horse! Yes, there are others who would have beaten him elsewhere but at Aintree he was the king. Never will he be forgotten, he as the horse who saved the National.

Although I am not a horse racing fan, I have to say Red Rum made me watch his legendary achievements at the toughest race of them all, the Grand National, when it was a true test of jumping and stamina. What a miraculous horse that was, by many a country mile my favourite horse. What a privilege it was to see his legendary achievements, and, he made it look so easy, when really it was anything but. Seemed to be such an intelligent horse as well. RIP Red Rum and thank you just for being you.

Brian fletcher actually only rode rummy to his 2 firsts and one second. then brian said to the press that the horse should be retired behind gingers back so he changed jockeys. Tommy stack rode him second and got second first time and then won on him in his final race!! Greatest horse ever!

i was at work when i heard he had gone to aintree for the last time. i could not stop the tears. for a horse bred to sprint over a short distance he made short work over the proper aintree fences. its time he was honoured as its 40 years since the little hero from southport won his first national so lets hope channel 4 surprise us this april. i dont think many of todays chasers could tackle the fences that red rum did.

As an Aussie, I was a bit cranky with Rummy when he denied Crisp his Grand National win. But what that mighty horse did subsequently elevated Crisp into the Pantheon of great thoroughbreds.

The Greatest National winner ever. Had his posters on my wall. A true HERO. In the same vain, there was an unsung hero in the mix. His Jockey for two wins and two second's, Brian Fletcher, who also won the National on Red Aligator, plus placed on Eyecatcher the year Rummy won his Third National....Probably the best National Jockey ever.....WHAT A TEAM!!!

Red Rum was the poor boy who became King! His achievements can never be equalled because the old style Grand National no longer exists. These days smaller softer fences, a lower maximum weight and a slightly shorter distance.

Greatest horse alongside Secretariat.Ignore what the "experts" say.Jumping those fences at Aintree with speed and strength is ultimate test and many horses sadly pay with their lives including Gold Cup champions, who are favored by these "experts" over Red Rum.There is no greater jump horse than this one and Sec was greatest flat horse by a mile.

i agree Ruffian was great, but remember, she was a 3yo american filly who raced on dirt tracks on the flat for about 1 year. Red Rum was on the other side of the world, starting his carreer aged 2 and retiring at 13, over fences and long distances. very, very different horses whoch cannot be compared with each other!

Good to see the noun ; legend, being used so perfectly.Red Rum is equally as famous now as before. Comparison with Tiger Roll is inevitable but it is clear; Red Rum was a strong stayer, particularly in his later years ,whereas Tiger Roll should be remembered as one of the most versatile steeplechasers ever and a high class juvenile hurdler.I love them both !

Regarding Best Mate & an Exeter memorial , unfortunately due to the one of the ramifications on the foot & mouth outbreak in 2001 ,approx, it is no longer possible to bury a horse in this way . I dont understand the scientific aspect of it but needless to say it is because of this that the officials at Exeter were prohibited from doing this . Another who will never be forgotten !

IsuckatguitarLets get Good: you sir, have not a clue, do some research.. in 1973 Red Rum beat the course record, they went so fast and that stood until Mr Frisk beat it in1990 and he went on to the win the Whitbread. Red Rum went to Aintree unbeaten in his prep races 72/73. He ran in the Hennessy in 73 and was only just beaten by Red Candle. In 1974, he went to Ayr and won the Scottish National just a short time after carrying top weight in the Aintree race. Yes it's true he never entered the Gold Cup, but in Nationals he beat many horses who had either won the Gold Cup or ran in it, namely twice winner L'Escargot, the Dikler and one or two others. Please get your facts right before you write such ignorant drivel.
