Stunning aquarium and sump design. I'm doing 2 part dosing on a 30 gal all-in-one aquarium that consistantly yields calcium level of about 500ppm without any supplementation, just weekly water changes. I do add alkalinity daily to maintain that level around 9dkh. I was adding equal amounts of calcium and alkalinity but stopped since the calcium level is so high. My guess is its in the Red Sea Salt that i use that elavated levels of alkalinity, mag, and calcium. Is this the correct course of action to take until the calcium level starts to fall, which i assume it will once the frags start growing larger, or is this throwing matters out of balance? Everything in the aquarium appears to be thriving, acro frags, acans, and a ton of zoanthids. Thanks.
@Reefkpr15 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael. Yes you are handling the imbalance of Calcium and alkalinity exactly like I would. I am curious to what your Magnesium level is? Sometimes if your Magnesium is out of wack it will cause this. If your Mag is at correct levels I would just continue dosing alkalinity and monitor your calcium. In the past I've had my tank completely stall and stop using alkalinity and or Calcium. Just continue monitoring and I might suggest trying a new Calcium test just to double check. Wouldn't worry much especially since your coral is thriving. Just keep testing on a regular basis. When I had my stalls the drop and consumption came suddenly and started consuming again. Hope this helps.
@912912patriot5 жыл бұрын
@@Reefkpr1 thank you kindly for responding. I do use Hanna and Red Sea test kits to check one against the other. There is some variance, but not much, ie 510 on one and 500 on another. Magnesium is somewhere around 1350 to 1400. Thanks again for responding and you have one awesome set up.

Your corals are all glued so beautifully. Do you have a video showing how you glue them into the tank?
@Reefkpr15 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil. I do not have a video on how I glued them. I'll describe my process. I use the Super Glue Gel from the Dollar store. I use the tube under water and put a generous portion on the rock where I want the coral. I also put glue on the bottom of the frag plug or coral base then join them together holding in place for 30-45 seconds. On heavier frags the process is the same except I use Tunze coral gum "sandwiched" between the two glue spots.

Nice tank buddy. I have the same set up just a week old I transfer what I had on my 90gal so this weekend I’ll be completing mu manifold. You don’t run carbon nor gfo?? Also is there a way you can tell me how to set up the calcium reactor I have it but do t know how to. Thanks
@Reefkpr13 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonnathan. I run Carbon periodically but not full time. If my Phosphate creeps up, I'll use a little gfo or rowaphos. Couple of ways to setup a calcium reactor. Peg the PH at 6.5 and adjust effluent. I tune mine so the effluent stays constant at 32ml per minute then adjust co2 to lower ph inside the reactor until alkalinity becomes stable. Alk dropping add a bit more gas. Alk rising back off a tiny bit on the gas. My co2 is set to never shut off and I only use the solenoid/ controller to shut off solenoid if something goes haywire.

Did the waste away affect your acro's in any way? I just started it again and can't remember if I did a 1/2 dose the first time or not. I'm thinking I did because I know it can deplete the O2. I think I read somewhere that a guy killed all his acro's when he used it. The last time I did it I wasn't nearly as acro dominate as I am now. I gotta be careful with it. One thing I definitely remember is that it opened my drains so well that I thought something was wrong with my reef at like 2am. I remember thinkin' "dang this stuff works well." haha.
@Reefkpr15 жыл бұрын
When I've dosed the Waste away heavy to fight undesired algae or bacteria on the sandbed, I had a slight "Stall" in alkalinity consumption. No physical damage or coral loss though.
@Reefahholic5 жыл бұрын
Reefkpr - Great to hear! I’ll probably start with 1/2 dose and go from there. Having a little algae on the sandbed, so I know that last time it cleaned the sand and rocks off fairly well. Hopefully it will know this algae out. My nutrients were moderately high in the beginning and now at 7 months they took a dive and being very low started a bloom. Funny how that works on young tanks. I’ve seen it before and in about 2-3 months it will be gone and the sand will be spotless. Well, we’ll see anyway. Gotta love reefing. Thx for the info though, makes me feel better!
@Reefkpr15 жыл бұрын
@@Reefahholic Forgot to mention it does deplete O2 as you mentioned above. I run a wooden airstone in the sump when using and leave skimmer on with cup off for more aeration.
@Reefahholic5 жыл бұрын
Reefkpr - Good idea!
@Reefahholic5 жыл бұрын
Reefkpr - Just a report back. Started with 2-3 mL’s of Waste Away and worked up to 7 mL’s for my water volume (75/G). Left the top off the skimmer and let it run over to keep O2 up. Definitely affects pH. Does slightly stall alkalinity consumption, but overall no ill effects. Didn’t harm any of my Acro’s. It knocked down some GHA on the sandbed, but wouldn’t completely eliminate it so I stopped the treatments. Just like the last time I ran it...it did open up drains and fight off some algae. I wouldn’t say it completely unclogged my sand-bed like Dr. Tim claims 🤧, but it definitely isn’t snake oil and does indeed do most of what’s advertised. 👍🏼✊🏼

Made sense to me and to be honest is probably the best thing I've ever done to my reef.
@Reefahholic5 жыл бұрын
Reefkpr - Honestly do you feel like the corals are happier? Vivid Aquariums runs a store in CA. He switched to CaRx’s and ran them for a few years, but then switched back to dosing pumps. I just feel like a CaRx is good for larger aquariums, but smaller tanks maybe not so good. They require a lot of tweaking. Keep me updated.

@@Reefahholic Yes sir. I haven't touched the Calcium Reactor in over 2 months once I dialed it in. My DKH has not fluctuated more the .1 in 2 months and I'm testing Dkh daily. I was always told you have to constantly tweak a Calcium Reactor but Have not experienced that at all. I'm brand new to using the Reactor so I'm not sure if the Kamoer has anything to do with not having to tweak. Its just a constant stream at 54ml a minute. Rock solid so far.
