Red Sky at Night - monotype printing story

I kept a video journal of the creation of this monotype so that you can see the process from beginning to end. The work was done over several weeks alongside other pictures as each layer needs time to dry. It's edited down to a brisk pace but took a lot longer!

your work is so beautiful. My question is how do you get your stencil to line up so perfectly - like when you add the tree? What type of ink do you use?

Hi Cas, the lining up or registration of all the layers is quite complex and difficult to answer briefly. I use a light box a lot with a key drawing sheet that shows the position of the main elements. I line up to the lower right corner each time I print.

I adore your work and love watching these videos. The textured strips are of interest to me. Do you make them or are they "found" objects of some kind? If you make them, can you share how you do that? Again, your work is stunning!

Hi, sorry for slow reply. They are found textured papers and fabrics that I cut or tear and roll ink onto.

Hi Frankie, I use a few different rollers from Rollacco, Hawthorn Printmaker and TN Lawrence all in the UK. They're quite expensive but so much better and long lasting compared to the cheaper "school" type plastic rollers.

Rebecca Vincent thank you for your reply. The ‘roller’ you talk about is called a brayer in the Uk, I was inquiring about the machine you put the paper and print in then use that big roller to flatten it down. What do they call the machine?

Ahh, that would be my etching press. It prints both etchings and monotypes as well as any other intaglio print. This one is Bewick, I don't think they make them any more. Hawthorn Printmaker make different sizes and they are very reasonably priced.
