I scattered a bunch of red spike seeds in one of my raised beds and I have some seedlings that look like they could be red spike or could be some type of weed. My amaranth are green though, is that normal to start? When do they usually turn red?

My red amaranth usually come out red. I’m not sure what could be going on. Are yours the red spike amaranth variety? Or a different one?

Did you pinch your amaranth when it first started growing?

Hello! I didn’t. Are you growing some?

Yes it is edible! The plume will dry and you can harvest the seeds! My neighbor is all about edible plants and she took some of it. I’m glad you discovered this video.

Found your video looking to see what to expect from the red spike amaranth. 😊 I’ll be starting some from seed and had never grown it or laid eyes on it. How many did you plant? Fell in love again with the cherry caramel phlox…wish I would have ordered some of that, too. Your bouquet was gorgeous!!

I planted about 5 plants in this area of the video. They get big! They don’t take off super fast but late summer to fall they go crazy! So easy to grow and low maintenance. No fertilizer required and little water. Just don’t let them dry out. I’m trying a different variety this year. It’s similar to the red spike but more golden for fall color. They love my climate. Good luck. Cherry caramel phlox was fun to grow to. Not a big lush plant but great for cutting.

I did need to stake mine at the end when they got huge because the stems started to break. I’ll make sure to hold them up this year

@@FlowerFanatic that’s helpful to know, thank you! Not sure what got into me while choosing new things to try this year, but mahogany splendor and roselle hibiscus also made it. Guess I was wanting to go large this year. 😁
