Red Star - 21 Zuan the 1963 Chronograph watch review!!

Got this 1963 chrono lent into the channel by a sterling gent over at Time in the UK channel, and it's one that many of you will know already!

I've had this watch for a year now and although it's not my daily wearer I do wear it often because I love the retro design and it's quirkiness. I got the 40mm with Sapphire crystal, not the purists favourite but I went for durability and I have a fairly big wrist. It has been reasonably accurate from the word go, and still is, within +/- 15 seconds a day which is totally acceptable to me at the price point. I agree, the movement is something to behold, remarkable to look at and a feat of micro -engineering. I took my (more) expensive Swiss watch which was newish in for repair as the Selitta movement failed, I was wearing this watch and the retired watchmaker remarked on it being a nice watch. I didn't tell him it was 180 quid off eBay. Strap wise, I binned the straps that came with it, cheap green Nato and cheap brown leather. I have it on a Geckota vintage leather Cheswell chestnut brown quick release strap. Really good bang for the buck and very comfortable and robust, the watch sits perfectly on my 7.2 inch wrist. £20 usual price, but I think it's on sale at the moment on their website for a tenner. Enjoy the watch.

Nice to see/hear you again mate! Guess the young member of the family keeps you busy enough, right? 😉 You know my thoughts on mechanical chronographs (boo!), so i'll just say that the hype has killed it TOTALLY for me. Although i like a lot the dial layout, numerals and markers, plus the subdials, are very interesting. Even the whole colour pallet is nice. But the hype and the copy of copy of copy of copy ruined it. Not sure if anyone can claim that makes the original (copy!) anymore. So, i'll pass, again. I love my version of this watch and you’re right, trying to determine authenticity etc is an absolute minefield, which I found out when I was doing my research. I think I got as close as I could be without paying the extortionate prices Seagull charge for their versions…..I won’t get into what’s right and wrong in terms of the ‘official’ manufacturer….and I went for the more traditional 38mm with acyclic crystal. Mine came on the most supple leather strap I have ever come across (RIAS), although this 18mm, again more in keeping with the original design. I think I shall be wearing it at some point next after watching your review 😂 BTW, it didn’t come from AliExpress as I’m not sure of the authenticity of any of their models when you see them range from £2 to £200!
