For those of you out of the loop: DeepSeek is an AI model that gives great performance on significantly cheaper hardware than usual, while also being open source. So the iron grip that Nvidia (for their hardware) and OpenAI (for their exclusive closed source model) had on the AI boom has abruptly gone down the drain, and their stocks have plummeted down into the depths. Monopolizing corporate execs shaking and crying rn.

But now that the hardware requirements are far less demanding, people no longer feel 'forced' to use high-cost specialty hardware when, say, a pre-existing server farm can now work perfectly fine for their purposes. And believe me, companies _love_ re-using their existing tech much more than buying new stuff. With this development, most future endeavors will be looking elsewhere for cheaper options, and companies that _already_ have Nvidia megasystems won't really feel the need to expand their systems anytime soon. Hence Nvidia taking a $600B kick to the groin.

As an AI/ML researcher, the really flabbergasting thing is just how inflated the market became on the basis of AI hype, totally divorced from any reality of what the tech is capable of or the infrastructure it requires to do the important bits. A trillion dollars of value, lost because specific LLM wank was demonstrated not to be exclusive to specific setups.
