Red Velvet's concept is really unique. The group's name represents its concept, defined by two different images, "Red" and "Velvet". "Red" signifies their vivid and bold image (Power Up, Russian Roulette, Red Flavour), whereas "Velvet" reflects their classy and toned-down side (Psycho, Bad Boy, Peek-a-boo, Really Bad Boy).

And EITHER side may or may not have supernatural/horror-movie/scary threads through it. Power Up is red without (aka summer song), Russian Roulette is red with. Psycho is pretty much the only velvet with, Bad Boy is velvet without. I have to disagree with how you classify Peek-a-boo and RBB as velvet; to me, they are too uptempo for that. I put them in the same category as Russian Roulette, red with dark threads. RV excels at juxtaposing bright musicality with dark themes. While its tempting to force things into a half-and-half mold, by my measure, 3/4 of RV's singles are red. You have to hit b-sides like "Time Slip" to get more velvet.

OH MY GOODNESS YES YES YES!! I clicked so fast when I saw the Notification, I am so glad that you are reacting to more Red Velvet! They are absolutely INSANE the Vocals, Visuals, Dance, Rap, just everything is AMAZING and by the way Russian Roulette is like a mixture between Red and Velvet, Red Flavour is on the Red side same with Power Up, and Bad Boy is on the Velvet side! All of these Songs are absolutely phenomenal the only bad thing about Red Flavour though was that Wendy was not healthy during the MV she was actually on this diet called Yoyo diet where you lose a lot of weight and then regain it and it is a pretty vicious cycle, the reason why she was doing it was because a lot of people were calling her fat even though she was far from it! (Speaking about Wendy she was the one who did that high note at the end of Power Up and who was doing those notes in Bad Boy), you should also check out the Lyrics to Bad Boy because they are actually kind of suspicious, as well as the English Version it is very catchy and just super good overall! Okay, so first things first, in russian roulette they are trying to kill each other (another wierd yet unique MV) , in Red Flavor, which basically one of their most normal concelt MV (but, it has a sprinkle of wierdness to it, both in the song and the MV, in tge song, you can hear someone in low bass note , a guy singing something which cannot be understood clearly and in the MV, you can notice that they are transforming into a fruit when they are trying to interview themselves (note that red velvet have their own representatuve color and fruit) and tgat is what they transformed to. And in Power Up MV, well it has a hidden dark easter meaning to it. Long story short, because of the hotness (basically the objects melting in the start of the MV), Irene made her members shrank, mixed them into the juicess, and drank them in order to power up and fight the heat. You can notice their representative colors being mixed in a glass and irene's color is not there, and also when the members are swimming in their respective juicess and colors, Irene is not there, and also, there is a scene where Irene got chocked when she was like looking at the glass she mixed, that is because she realized that she just drank her members. Mistly in the MVs you notice Wendy's voice, and one time Joy's too. Wendy did the power up high note. In the bad boy, yes, they are singing live, they dont really lipsync unless it was their concert and have tok take a break singing live at some point in order to save their voice. So when it comes to comeback stages, they are live. Note that red velvet doesnt use their concept twice so their mv is more interesting. If you wabt to crh along with the song, can I suggest for you to reaft to Wendy. Wendy was injured way back in 2019 and it almost caused her life, she fell from the stage and broke her rib, and other parts of her body. It was really a tough time, so her solo debut really really really means a lot to us and to her as it took like 2 years for her full recovery. Her album was her message to her fans who waited for her and cheered for her, and to herself also. Please do checkout first, her title track LIKE WATER, and the underrated yet powerful song WHEN THIS RAIN STOPS. please checkout the MV of the like water MV and the live video of When this rain stops. All of the song in the album are great and you can find her singing tgem live, but first, watch the two songs first then the other tracks. One of the things that immediately attracted me to kpop was the fact that lyrics are distributed at all, that everyone gets at least _some_ time in the center, not just singing, but formation shifts embedded in the choreography; this is a stark contract to US pop, where the center and backup roles are much more stratified; not taking anything away from Beyonce, Destiny's Child became, as happens all to often, "Queen B and Friends". Kpop fans joke and complain about the phenomenon, the US lives it.

About live singing, backing tracks almost can't be avoided unless it's those instances where they actually sang acapella where they did the songs out of popular demand and the track wasn't prepared. But for music shows, IMO, there would almost always be a backing track, I mean if the song has heavy choreography it could be physically impossible to sing smoothly so even if the mics are live, there is a backing track to catch them. One thing I've noticed tho is that Wendy's live vocals at least will ALWAYS be present and dominant over the backing track, Seulgi to a lesser degree and then rest alternating being live and letting the backing track take over. If I'm not wrong, music shows have either already processed the vocals or playing a prerecorded live (not the studio) as a backing track for broadcast so you still get that raw sounding quality even if the performer decides to lip sync... or not, haha

just a suggestion, Red Velvet is known for their vocals and harmonizations so you might wanna listen to them using headphones or earphones?cause the production behind the music itself and the vocals are usually insane! they really harmonise perfectly with each other , they also usually have a lot of adlibs going on in their songs compared to a lot of girl groups. just fun info : If you notice, they are also one of the FEW girl groups that have the SING ALONG TOGETHER during chorus part (actually all groups from SM entertainment have the "chanty" - sing together chorus be it boygroups or girlgroups, but comparing from the big 3 entertainment company perspectives - SM, YG, JYP. SM is the only company that keeps the tradition until now. That what makes their chorus sound so satisfying and "fuller" to the ear because they're using all members to sing, instead of just letting one member. and that's also the reason why SM groups usually have a lot of harmonising and adlibs parts
