Having seen the show first, I remember reading ASOS the Catelyn chapter before the red wedding where she’s coming to grips with the loss of her children but moreso Arya. I actually cried, it’s the only time I did, thinking how close they would come to seeing Arya but never getting the chance to know she’s alive.

What is truly sad is the shows writers and producers screwed over Catelyn charcter arch by not telling the book story of Lady Stoneheart the Revenant embodiment of her wrath and anger. One of the coolest characters of the book, and we were robbed, more so in that Michelle Fairley would have absolutely killed it. This is not the end of Catelynn in the books....rather it is the beginning of Lady Stoneheart. That character is also the readers embodiment of our anger for the red wedding, so in way it killed off our own connection as well. I'll never understand why they made that choice. The series would have been so much better to incluide and expand on that character.

"You lost the war the moment you married that girl." - Lord Karstark Breaking promises is definitely the theme of this season. Robb breaking his promise to the Freys, the story of Catelyn breaking her promise to the gods that she'd love Jon, the story of Jaime breaking his oath to kill the Mad King, Jon breaking his vows to the Night's Watch, and then again with Jon betraying Ygritte in this episode. I'm probably even missing a few.

One of the best things about the "Red Wedding" story is that it makes sense from every single angle. After it happens and you look back, it's so obvious. And it's not just the inevitable reaction to breaking a promise to a notoriously nasty Lord. It's almost necessary to clear the way for the rest of the series. You have to get rid of at least three characters who were interesting, but are at this point holding us back from fully investing in "next generation" characters like Sansa, Arya, Jon Snow, and Bran. And basically ending the Lannister vs. Stark war opens things up for the other main plot lines to take center stage. It reminds me a bit of what Stephen King did with his epic novel "The Stand." He got to a point where it was hard to see how to move forward with the cast he had built up -- so he had to "clean house" so to speak in one big event. If you know, you know. If you don't, read "The Stand." And by the way, Stephen King and George R. R. Martin are acquainted and I believe have done conversations / mutual interviews, in front of audiences, on their respective writing strategies.

I'll never forget watching this when it premiered on HBO. Everyone was fucking shocked, except those who had read the books of course. GRRM is a genius at making you really care about characters, and then killing them suddenly. Also, the dialogue he writes is some of the best I have ever read, now that I have read the books. His way of writing exposition is seamless.

How quickly people realized that anyone could die when Ned died, and that there was a major power struggle in the kingdom, but quickly fell to he fairy tale love story where Robb breaks his oaths, Kills one of his bannermen leading to a major defection of one of the largest parts of his army against the advice of everyone around him, and Kat gives away their hostage that if they still had him, none of this probably would've happened. They started strong, but played the "Game" poorly.

42:10 That's why Roose Bolton was upset with Locke for taking Jamie's hand and abusing him. Roose understood that the deal he wanted to make with Tywin might be in jeopardy if Jamie was maimed and injured. A lot of people don't mention that letting Jamie go was a weird thing for Roose to do, but then it makes perfect sense after you realize it's because Lord Bolton was planning on betraying Robb in favor of teaming up with the Lannisters.

Jaime speaks the truth to Locke this season that the Starks can't possibly win. Stannis is defeated. Renly is gone. The Karstarks have abandoned Robb. The Tyrells and their massive army are allied with the Lannisters. Roose Bolton realized this and so turned his coat.

Consider the events happening in the North simultaneously - his bastard securing Winterfell's ruins, flying Bolton's banner over the towers and wiping the Ironborn in Moat Caitlin. In the eyes of the smallfolk lords come and go, but whoever sits there, rules the north and protects them from the raids.Roose had all his bases covered. North being already in his control, minor houses of the North alienated by Robb - all was left to secure his position amongst major houses with the Iron throne - and the deal with Freys and Lannisters, with Tullys wiped and Frey becoming most probably the next ruler of Riverlands - that secured the topmost two levels. But he simply did what he needed to in the circumstances others created, particularly Robb. Robb sent THeon to Balon which resulted in the raid on the North. Robb broke the word given to Frey. Robb killed Karstark. And finally, Robb with more than 10 000 men couldn't even hold a one prisoner that mattered. The real question is, whether Roose betrayed the North... or tried to save it from Robb.

I caught the beginning of your live stream today, so I know you're a whole season ahead and this was a long time ago for you. Your utter silence for the Red Wedding was intense! Like all the other book readers, I was watching for newbie reactions to this scene when it first aired and it was literally the birth of reaction content. It was wanting to create this scene that prompted the show-runners to approach the author, and they did an amazing job of it. For me, Michelle Fairley (Catelyn) dominated the screen and put an incredible amount of emotion into a single scream. Breathtaking. As always ladies, thank you. But Jaime had idea what was going to happen. In the books, Bolton said “Jaime Lannister sends his regards” and this leads Lady Stoneheart to want vengeance against Jaime even though he was unaware of what would happen at the wedding.

The Red Wedding is a great scene in show, but it's better in the books. The Freys disguise sellswords and knights as musicians, and Roose Bolten's men hide their chainmail under their furs. When Catelyn makes a point to comment on how poor the musicians were playing, you start to suspect something is going on. The Freys pretty much get Robb's bannermen drunk, and their disguised knights and sellswords, along with Roose Bolten's men, attack them. When the Rains of Castamere started playing, some of the Northerners recognized it and knew shit was about to go down g. Also, Robb's bannermen put up much more of a fight. Dacey Mormont kills a guy by smashing his face in with a bottle of wine, and Smalljohn Umber flips a table over to catch the crossbow bolts and protect Robb. Greatjohn Umber manages to break the arm of the first dude who tries to engage him, kills him and takes his sword, kills another, and gravely wounds two more of the Frey's men. It takes eight of the Frey's men to subdue and chain him, and he bites of one of the men's ear in the process. And I think Catelyn takes one of Walder Frey's grandsons, Aegon Frey, as a hostage, not his wife. Haha, sorry you guys had to go through that, but this is the episode a lot of us were waiting for 😆😆😆.
