I think the most subtle clue that they were about to be betrayed was when they started stabbing Rob's wife. If you think about it, once they finish stabbing her, they're probably going to move onto Rob too. Since she's affiliated with Rob, it might not have been a random attack but a coordinated one.

And Robb was also portrait as a great leader, ambitious youth etc.. People expected him to win. So when u see/read the red wedding it shots u in the head. in the shows u can do this by showing daenerys's visions as a dream in the first season. People would forget it by the time and boom there it is :D But the bolton scenes were also enough to my opinion. I started the books after the show so bacially i didnt know whats gonna happen. @@megamen7353 With writing, you're not necessarily going to instantly attribute a banquet to Edmure's wedding, and that's why it's shocking - because you probably wouldn't relate the two until they've both happened. However, with a show, you'd need to actually show the Red Wedding, you'd have to show the same set, Robb's body etc. Didn't have to do that in the books because it's from Dany's perspective and she doesn't know who anyone is. The real clues are in the books. Right from the start of Book 3 you get the feeling that something something is going to happen but you can't seem to put your finger on it until it happens. Lord Tywin says this on multiple situations - "some wars are won with swords, others with quills and ravens”. He says to Tyrion that he is planning something and he wants to tell it to him but he won't. Everyone starts behaving like Robb was out of the picture. Tyrion was wed to Sansa. Tywin even says "you let me worry about Robb". Roose Bolton starts calling himself King in the North. and even after Robb betrays Walder Frey, he is too polite to Robb and willing to forget everything, rose Bolton sending Jaime to Kings Landing and advising Brienne to forget about the Starks. The whole books has an eerie feeling to it like something's going to happen just around the next chapter. This thing was not captured in the show.

Another HUGE clue, was the fact that Tywin retreated. On the map, Harrenhal is at the perfect point in central westeros to prevent Robb from attacking Casterly Rock or Kings Landing. And Tywin at the point KNEW that if he did not hold Harrenhal, his home would be in danger of the Northern Army. But if he didn't, Stannis could sack the capital and kill his family. When he retreated, he left no one alive at Harrenhal and basically gave it up, which meant he knew that the only logical choice left for Robb is to attack where his army is not at, Casterly Rock. And like Robb said: only lord who had the army he needed was Frey and since Freys already been bought, he knew Casterly Rock was safe. Tywin gave Robb no choice by retreating, get Frey's help and attack casterly rock, or sit on his ass until Tywin returns with Tyrell's army from high garden in addition to his own troops and get wiped out.
@LF-hj8kk2 жыл бұрын
Bullshit First of all, Robb's plan was to take back the north, not Casterly Rock and he could not have an hostile army at his back. Secondly, he was already in the westerlands and his plan was to ambush Tywin when he came back to defend his home. This would have worked if Edmure didn't hold the crossings. By slowing Tywin, he allowed the Tyrells to link up with his army and to focus on king's landing.

Ahaha true, I don't know how they'd explain that in the show. Probably by saying Ramsay didn't show any banners... In the books however he does have his banner, and things go very differently. There are two armies in front of Winterfell: Winterfell's garrison led by Rodrik Cassel is back from Torrhen's Square and wants to take Winterfell back from the Greyjoy. Then Ramsay Bolton arrives in front of Winterfell, and goes towards Rodrik's men. They think the Bolton come as allies to help them against the Greyjoy... but the Bolton treacherously kill them all before they understand what's happening. Then Theon think the Bolton are HIS allies, and opens the gates of Winterfell to Ramsay... who kills the Ironborn, burns everything and makes Theon prisoner. In the books, there's a lot more to indicate it, but it's more discreet. For instance, Roose Bolton sends Robett Glover and Ser Helman Tallhart to Duskendale with a third of the northmen foot. these are just clues to Ramsey's identity. Ramsey had nothing to do with the red wedding. Here are the real clues: 1. Robb's decision to send theon to Pyke was disastrous and cost him winterfell 2. Robb's decison to marry Talisa would piss off the freys 3. Robb killed Rickard Karstark, causing the Karstarks to leave 4. Cat's decision to release Jamie. 5. Roose letting Jamie Lannister go Robb pissed off all his Bannermen. The Lannisters were clearly winning. Robb honestly had it comming

Theon gets a bad rap. Dude was given up and traded to the enemy by his father - and then years later rejected by his father for the inevitable loss / change of identity. In the book, the whole thing had started when Roose Bolton was in close contact with Tywin Lannister. When Robb married Jayne Westerling, Tywin had seen the oppurtunity. Roose was in league with Tywin when he was holding Harrenhal, he sent Robett Glover and a good portion of Robb's loyal men to Duskendale, a few days march North of King's Landing, to plunder. And also into a trap that Glover was stupid enough to fall in. After that, Robb had no choice but to go to Freys, he had seen no other way.

This is not only the reasons for the red wedding. Roose Bolton received a letter to Harrenhal written by Tywin Lannister shortly before Jamie and Brienne were captured and brought back by Locke. Tywin proposes to Roose to betray Robb Stark to become Governor of the North and also tells him that Walder Frey is ready to organize the banquet to assassinate the Stark and his armies because Robb did not keep his promise of marriage. Roose Bolton knowing that his son had captured Theon Greyjoy and resumed Winterfell ended up accepted. The red wedding could begin.

I watched Season 3 initially when I was way younger and of course, the Red Wedding took me by absolute shock but on re-watching the show now, maybe it’s just the power of hindsight but it’s actually pretty obvious that it would happen. Robb’s arc in Season 3 feels so hopeless and dim with the Lannisters having consolidated power alongside the Tyrells after Stannis’ defeat and it was pretty obvious they weren’t going anywhere, not that Robb commanded enough men or power to beat them, with his alliances of Northern houses ruined by marrying Talisa, losing Jaime as a bargaining chip and beheading Lord Karstark. That Walter Frey would suddenly forgive Robb’s slight even after getting warned he’s a dangerous man to cross in addition to Roose Bolton letting Jaime return to King’s Landing all the while Tywin speaks of Robb in the Small Council almost as an afterthought was just the show screaming at you that something terrible would happen to him. Can’t believe I didn’t see it coming the first time I watched it, especially after Ned’s death which proved that no character was safe.

Even if Roose actually ordered Ramsay to do all of that, and that's a big if, that still doesn't really foreshadow the Red Wedding, it just shows Roose alone was likely to betray Robb at some point. Theon's betrayal was outright treacherous, but at least Roose followed Robb's orders to take back Winterfell, it was Ramsay who burned it down. Roose and most of his Bolton men fought and helped Robb win 3 battles in the war, it was when the fighting died down and getting distracted at Riverrun, cutting off allegiance with the Karstarks and needing to go back to the Twins to make amends proved too many poor decisions led to Robb's decline in the war. Roose's deal with Tywin and Walder was a literal backstabbing but he did fight with him and only turned on him when it looked like they weren't going to win anymore, so from Roose's point of view a smart move

I don't think Bolton had been contacted by Tywin yet. It's only because Robb lost Winterfell that everyone saw he was in a position of weakness, and thus Tywin made his move, and made the offer to Roose Bolton.

Merely Correct I don't remember in which episode Tywin writes this letter, but since he's at King's Landing only after the Battle of Blackwater (s02e09), I guess this scene is in season 3. Ramsay burned Winterfell in season 2 ;)
@Comradcommodore9 жыл бұрын
Honestly he probably just burned down Winterfell because he is a dick lol. I haven't read the books but I have read through many other people's comments else where that in the book Ramsey is pretty much causing havic throughout the North. The show portrays him as being a big of an unknown, even when Peter meets him in the show during the current season, he tells him something along the lines of "I know everything about everyone but curiously I've never heard of you". And as I stated in the book Ramsey is being a dick all over the north, he takes some ladies castle forces her to marry him and proclaim him lord of said land, rapes her then then leaves her in a tower to starve and die. So if you told me Ramsey burned down Winterfell without a motive, wouldn't suprise me. Kind of reminds me of Batman's joker a bit doesn't it?
@Jarekx20079 жыл бұрын
Merely Correct Ramsay burned Winterfell because Ramsay does what Ramsay does. It's why Ramsay flays the 20 men that Theon was with, why he makes Theon into Reek when he could have used Theon as a bartering tool like Roose wanted, why he flays everyone at Deepwood Motte... In the books Ramsay also probably killed Roose's legitimate son. The dude really does just want to see the world burn, and he gets off on it. Roose knows this which is why he is trying to get a real, legitimate son. But until then he needs Ramsay, no matter how bat-shit insane he is.

For example, I've shown the cross with the flaid man from Bolton's sigil on Robb's strategy board, on Bolton's flag, and then the cross where Theon is tied. The book version of the sacking of Winterfell is so much more evil. Theon was actually convinced by the Maester to surrender and join the Night's Watch, but right when he was about to, the Bolton men killed Jory's father and the other northern soldiers, with Reek (who wasn't revealed to be Ramsay until the end of the chapter) tricking the Iron Born into thinking they were saved before slaughtering them and taking Theon captive.

Yes it appears easier to see the betrayal when the scenes are shown all together like this, good for people who never read the books. From what I have learned from cannon Bolton actually had a good relationship with Ned Stark, I think after his execution Bolton started weighing his options. Robb's oath breaking, the execution of one of his major bannerman Rickard Karstark, and failing to hold on to Jamie were definitely the tipping points for him to side with the Lannisters.

the flayed man across a cross shouldn't be a subtle 'easteregg'. Its known as the sigil of house bolton. In the books, we are shown just how angry the frets were at robb. In the books, an actual battle happened at winter fell, the iron born didn't just give up, and reek (ramsay/hornblower) was pretending to be theon's servant but backstabs at the last second and takes him for hostage.

I bet Theon wishes he put a little more work into that speech to the Iron Born than promising a hundred wounds and guts pouring out on the floor. I bet it sounded better in his head. However I will say that to this day, that frustrated eye roll he gives just a little earlier in the scene about how much he hates the horn player is the funniest moment of the entire series. Well, that and the "meh" face Sam Tarley makes when Stannis mentions his father. 😂 I just caught that a couple weeks ago for the first time.

It wasn't Roose's fault it was Robb's. With letting Theon go, Losing Jaime, not killing prisoners, Killing Karstark, marrying the foreign girl, trusting the Frey's, those all added up
@thegreenreaper66604 жыл бұрын
That wás the only small clue actually. Roose 'heeding' Robb's orders, yet adding up to those orders himself: Once Ramsey had re-taken Winterfell: Put everyone to the sword, the castle to the Torch, and blame it on the dead Ironborn who couldnt deny it anymore... With Winterfell in a pile of rubble, that would gravely weaken the hold of the Starks on the North, with the Boltons always having been the 2nd-most powerful House in the North(as good as equal to the Starks, probably stronger, and a fár more fearsome repuation! Yet the Starks had the support of all the other Houses!) Robb was a bít too honorable, he really should have listened better to Roose, actually: he should have made Roose his 'hand', let him torture away on Lannister-officers for any spack of information he could peel from them, and for this 'clue', Robb should have shown a bit of a dark side in wanting to truly be a feared Ruler: No mercy for the Ironborn... Just tell them.... and as soon as they hand over Theon.... Kill em anyway! Robb should have simply said "The other Ironborn are to be escorted to the Dreadfort, to never be seen again... perhaps heard....I trust your son will know what to do...As for Theon... No, i will kill hím myself, Roose....and you know why!". Roose knew: in War, you need to be merciless and ruthless! Make your enemies FEAR you!(its half the battle!), even before they face you! Robb wanted to do too many things'the right way'. Yet in War, there actually never is a right way, only the way of the winner... Roose knew this... Robb didnt...

good video but int eh books it is cleary pointed that ramsay and jaimie had no affect on the red wedding. for example: - ramsay randomly attacked villages of the north (including lands of the house bolton) since his father is gone. Why? because he is freaking insane. - in the books rodic cassel was sent to retake winterfell, and ramsay disgusied as a common bolton soilder offered his help, but then he killed all stark man. After that Theon thinks ramsay is here to help him, and opens the gates for ramsay, and then he kills and flays all ironborn and captures theon. why? because he is freaking insane - in the books jamie said, "Jamie Lannister send his regards" (not "the lannisters..."), with the meaning "tell Rob stark i am gone and he wont catch me again". Jamie didn't know anything about Roose's / Tywinn's Plans.

The best clues in the books are the last words said by Sandor Clegane in Arya’s previous two chapters leading up to the red wedding. “Your uncles bloody wedding” “It’s your bloody brother I want” Also Cat’s chapter is so tense in the build up, you get a sense something bad is about to happen.
