The film was directed by Matthew Lopez, a gay playwright who also adapted it and wrote the screenplay. So although obviously the story has to be streamlined for a film (he cut some characters which made some book readers really unhappy) he's very passionate about the project and it looks to me like he's done an amazing job.

It's a great love story, a lovely romantic comedy, and since it's a queer story, it adds that extra layer of tension and depth that straight stories don't have. Truly worth reading! About the movie: the director is bi. He wanted to make this movie so badly. The editing process lasted a year and a half because he loves the book and wanted to do it justice by making the movie the best it could be. I've learnt quite a bit about cinematography and symbolism & metaphores and in the trailer alone there's heaps of it. So it's a very well made movie with great cinematography!

This book is like one of my comfort books. Alex and Henry though being a first son and prince are so relatable in different aspects I’m hoping that comes through in the movie. There is this one scene I absolutely need I can’t say too much but it’s not even scene a between Alex and Henry (though I’m sure I could name several scenes I need from them) it’s a scene between Alex and Henry’s sister Bea (who was briefly in the trailer) it’s just a beautiful scene talking about grief and I just need it so badly.

The one scene where Henry tells Alex he told his sister a bit the two of them and the reaction from Alex was so cute! I confess I had read some not so positive reviews about it and thought it would be very very badly written. But after watching this trailer (and knowing I would be watching the movie anyways), I finally read the book and I'm so glad! I laughed a lot. It was cute, and sweet, and funny. And I liked the "political" stuff in it. It's not a literary masterpiece by any means, but it's an entertaining queer rom-com. @nutkja Жыл бұрын
The emails! I’m so curious how they’re going to do them in the movie. Alex and Henry write these wonderful emails (aka love letters) back and forth throughout the second half of the book. And they do this adorable thing where at the end of every email they add a PS with a quote from a famous (often queer) historical person’s love letter. Examples include: Alexander Hamilton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Virginia Woolf, etc. I just really love how this book approaches history. One of the main themes of the entire book is how queer people fit into history and Alex and Henry spend a lot of time thinking about their roles in it. One of the most famous lines is from Alex in one of his emails to Henry: “Thinking about history makes me wonder how I’ll fit into it one day, I guess. And you too… History, huh? Bet we could make some.” This book is one of my absolute favorites and I love that while also being an adorable rom-com it really gets into some profound discussions about queer history, fame, politics, and family. Also the turkeys… Such a hilarious scene! (For context: the US President famously “pardons” two turkeys on Thanksgiving and Alex insists they stay in his room ahead of the ceremony instead of money being spent for them to stay at a fancy hotel like usual.) Here are some quotes: “That night, as Alex stares into the cold, pitiless eyes of a prehistoric beast of prey, he has a few regrets. THEY KNOW, he texts Henry. THEY KNOW I HAVE ROBBED THEM OF FIVE-STAR ACCOMMODATIONS TO SIT IN A CAGE IN MY ROOM, AND THE MINUTE I TURN MY BACK THEY ARE GOING TO FEAST ON MY FLESH.” “he is in a prison of his own creation, sworn to babysit these turkeys until the pardoning ceremony, and is just now realizing his deep-seated fear of large birds.” “I think he’s cute, Henry responds. that’s because you can’t hear all the menacing gobbling Yes, famously the most sinister of all animal sounds, the gobble.”

(i assume you've seen the movie by now) so i saw the movie first and then read the book. i think that Matthew Lopez took good advantage of the visual media. the "drowning" scene on the lake is the perfect symbolism capturing the agony of Henry's closet: his closet is suffocating him, drowning him. the making love scene in Paris: it's obvious that Henry is completely in love with Alex, and that Alex is falling hard for Henry too. no words in either scene and no words are needed. you just can't do that in a book. so for me it's not either/or it's yes, both.

being a first 50 rows of Gaga kind of gay, i wanted to ask you a question. Alex seems pretty clueless about his bisexuality. i have a theory i call That One Guy where it's easy to be straight but one guy can drive you to complete distraction and make you question everything. do you think that's common? i'm not talking about DL guys skulking around on Grindr, but having an "oh shit" kind of moment which is pretty much what Alex had. in the book Alex was obsessed with Henry from like when he 13 but he seemingly had no clue about the sexual angle of it.

Compared to the book the leads are absolutely miscasted, especially the actor who plays Alex looks to old and is to tall. I‘m very disappointed about that. None of the less I‘m very excited for it to be a fun movie to watch, if you haven’t read the book, which by they way has some flaws regarding the British part. 🌈

I look forward to reading it. The interesting part about books is that everyone has different visualisations of what a character should be , I've had someone say literally the opposite saying that the casting is perfect. Either way, all that matters is it being a great film.
