Thank you thank you. My dad taught this sad but wonderful song to me years ago when I was a boy. Years later when I became a performer, a partner and I sang it to many people.

Best version I've heard yet, great fiddle and harmonies. I used to think Red Wing was a bird when I heard this song a young kid. I didn't make the connection that Red Wing was the Indian maid. My father used to sing it this way: "There once was an Indian maid, who lived in a house in Spain." I think that was his own original cover of the song. T.S. Eliot in The Wasteland quotes another version: "Oh the moon shines bright on Mrs. Porter And on the daughter of Mrs. Porter They wash their feet in soda water And so they oughter, To keep them clean."

For those who may be interested, the melody to Redwing and Union Maid are, yes, the same, as others have noted. Both however are taken from Schumann's opus 68. The melody was also used by Arlen in the score for Wizard of Oz. Great melody and great adaptations.

In 1915 Edward Stanning adapted the lyrics in response to English newspaper criticism of Charlie Chaplin (originally English) wealthy and safe in the USA instead of coming back to volunteer for war. Check out: "the moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin". There are several other less well-known versions set to this music - but I don't think they have been recorded.

Saw the band in Knoxville today. I really enjoyed listening to them. When did the band change from four girls to two guys and two girls?
@jlw376637 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge there were never four girls. Early on Hasee Ciacco appeared occasionally but she was starting to tour with "The Barefoot Movement" but made only occasional appearances such as Song Of The Mountains.. Tyler Hughes (a guy) has always been there. The fiddler Ryan Nickerson came along shortly after the band formed and has been there ever since. Stephanie and Kristal have been there since the beginning.

Sounds like someone was trying to turn a stapler into a musical instrument.
@jlw376635 жыл бұрын
The sound is the dreaded taps plague that contaminates old time music venues of SW-Virginia such as The Carter Fold. The flat foot dancing (many with the dreaded taps) is actually a big audience draw but to me the taps really spoil the ability to enjoy the music. I don't frequent the nearby Carter Fold for that reason. I think the gentleman with the loud taps in this video had something like staplers loosely attached to the bottom of his footwear.
