I bought a pair of these about 12 years ago to replace another pair of redwings I'd had for over 20 years. These are fantastic boots. I wear them around town in the winter and when hunting. Don't be a wuss, break them in, wear them, enjoy them. They'll take good care of you. I've never had a problem getting in and out of cars either... lol... You might chalk my experience up to the difference between a Texan and a Brit though... :)

I’ve worn Nikes all my life and I just purchased my 875s last week. First day I wore them 8 hours straight and they felt alright. I went out and got some darn tough merino wool socks and wore them 14 hours straight the next day and they felt really good. Right socks will go a long way. I’m a long ways from breaking them in but so far I love the look. Also it does look better in the smaller sizes. I got a size 9 and they look perfect.
@CameronO

Yeah I think the smaller sizes play a big part, less boot and they just dont looks so long. But I still love them, going to slowwwwly break them in. I'll get there, they certainly don't look new so I'm doing something right. Cheers for the comment!

Great (and honest) review. I watched this recently as I was thinking of buying a pair. Reviews like this and some other horror stories of the 'break in' really put me off. I was pretty much put off the Moc Toe and going to go for the Chukka. Thankfully though I didn't. The Moc Toe just looks so much better! I wear a UK12 in almost everything, however I went for a UK11 in these. When you try them on initially they are like bricks. I have been wearing mine now, most days for around 2 weeks. Absolutely no blisters and I would go as far as saying they actually become comfortable quite quickly. Thick socks are an absolute most though. You wear these with thin socks, you're going to feel it! My advice would be, don't let any negative reviews put you off. Get them, as they look fu@king great! Go 1 full size down, wear thick socks and wear them for a few hours a day for the first week at least, then you're good to go!

I got a pair of 877s a month ago, they’re more or less broken in after wearing them every two or three days. I love them and the quality is amazing for the price. Beauty and practicality is in the eye of the beholder I guess - if sneakers and chukkas are your go-to, you have soft feet and ladies ankles 😂 😜

Such a thorough and fair assessment of these boots and the wearing in journey. I'm also 5 years in with owning a pair. Wearing mine has caused a bunion on side of a toe and numerous blisters along the way, you reminded me of when I also experienced the tops cutting into my ankles and found thick woolen socks helped ease that irritation, I was determined to wear these fuckers in and I'm there now! I replaced my laces with same coloured leather laces, which look schmick . Sadly their weight does fatigue the enjoyment and duration of wearing time. Like you've said they look great and deserve the perseverance.

For 5 years I've had the Style 877 8-inch classic, which is similar to your boot but taller at the top. They're a great pair of boots but they took a while to break in. I don't see myself parting from these soon.

Don't sell them, you'll regret afterwards!!! Wear them hard for a month (better 2 months) every other day, so you leave a day between wears for drying. They will eventually break in and they'll get very comfy.

You need to either go true to size or go down half a size from you brannock, not your sneaker size. My sneaker size can be 2 or 3 sizes larger than my brannock. My brannock is 8E and my 875s are 8E, they fit firm out of the box and loosen up to be perfect. Your boots are too big, along with the guy who made the video. Boots that are too big will forever give you blisters as there will always be friction from moving around inside the boot.
@boomzoom8864

I got mine around a year ago, and was able to brake them in pretty fast. Just wore them for light hiking a few times and it did the job. I mostly wear them to walk around the town or to the work. In terms of the weight, it did not really bother me, as I'm pretty chunky guy myself. The only thing I would advise is to add insole with extra padding if you walk a lot and your weight is 90ish kg +. Because I started to feel my knees when I've been wearing these for extended period of time.

got a few pairs of these along with various other redwing models never really had much of a problem with them , the only time i did was when i got my first pair as i was a trainer man before so my poor feet got chewed up but after a couple of weeks was all good and never had a problem with any other pair after that. One thing that really helped was shoes trees, put them in after week or so with my first pair and they really helped stretching them out and making them much more comfortable and a better fit along with keeping their shape. Use them with all my boots. Just a cheap cedar wood/spring pair for about a fiver each (on eBay or amazon etc). Worth it to save your feet ;)

Just came back from Red Wing store .. brought the 875s and Iron Rangers. I had my feet measured in store as US12 but ended up needing a full size down at US11.. EU sizing ignore. The break in will be tough regardless, but if your feet slip it will be much worse.

Absolutely spot on :) I got a pair of 1907’s (that are slightly wider than the 875), I do wear 8,5 in rw’s and I don’t have the clown feet effect , but I do wear them every day so the break in goes faster (still hell process) This was a good review , considering that most KZbinrs suggest to wear thicker socks 😂😂 , NO it’s a tough boot to break in and will pay off in time The golden rule in my opinion is to try the smaller size that your foot can fit in and then size up half a us size up ✌🏻

Terrific review. Been eyeing these for awhile but I've also heard so much about the painful break-in period which scared me off. I'm an average guy with a desk job with many pairs of shoes and boots to rotate through so if I got these, it would only get occasional wear. So i'm on the fence but that patina you've got is fantastic!

Regarding the brake-in: I have had massive problems with the 875 at the ankle, as you mentioned. However, this was in my case due to wrong sizing. The first pair was a US 9D - with an 8.5D 875 I had zero problems. Same held true for the 8 last on Blacksmiths and Iron Rangers. Never had any issues with brake-in. So, I am not arguing that one never gets problems, but the right sizing was absolutely key for me. Additionally, the last can be a problem: 23 vs. 8 last: Moc toe (23 last) is a bit more narrow in the forefoot, hence it might not be for everyone. The 8 last on the Blacksmith, IR, and Beckman is a bit easier for my feet.

I’ve had the 875, and they’re a good boot but they take a long time to wear in if you’re not working hard in them. Recently purchased the White’s Perry Moc Toe and they were instantly comfortable. I would honestly recommend them much more instead, the leather is nicer, the toe box is cleaner and they put a lot more thought into comfort

But great information! I bought these boots recently. I got them about 10 days ago and I wear them at least 12 hours a day 5 days a week and during the weekend at least 6 hours a day. And they are already breaking in nicely. 10 times more comfortable then when I bought them! At first they were so stiff. But I’m an electrician and I do lots of ladder work and kneeling down on one foot and they are amazing! My feet feel great but at first my ankles hurt due to how stiff they were. But they are great boots for inside work during the winter. I’d recommend a warmer boot for outdoor use during the winter! But it gets cold here in the pacific north west! Thanks for the info great video! 👍🏻

Red Wing junkie here - highly recommend this pair. I have these, Blacksmiths, and Iron Rangers. These are easily the most comfortable. It should go without saying but they can also take a BEATING

don't let that scare you off - at least try a pair - a lot of people who complain about break-in got them too small, or have feet that don't go with the last that was used building them (aka too wide and/or too fat). I have never had any discomfort or pain with new RedWings. The right size may feel a tad too big at first, because of the stiffness of the boot, so extra care should be taken when looking for the right size.

I wore them in with thick socks in probably 2-3 weeks or so. After a month they had already become comfortable (wearing them almost any other day). I avoided blisters by putting a bandaid on the places where the leather rubs the most for the first week. And obviously avoiding wearing them on days where I plan to walk long distances for those first weeks. But I am surprised to hear those aren't comfortable. Because they already look like they should be broken in enough to be comfortable. I wonder why that is. Personally I think they may be too big. Just judging from how close the eyelets of the laces are pulled together. Not only could this cause discomfort, but in bigger sizes this also negatively affects (imo) the silhouette of the boot.
@ZylerOdwn
@ZylerOdwn 2 жыл бұрын
Im betting they are too small, im a US 12 and sized down to 11 and they are comfortable, and i usually size down to 11.5 so it was a half size down more than every other brand. RW is notorious for advising sizes too small on the heritage lines, and too small is the main reason for hard and painful breakin, not too large. Usually.

Thorogood 814-4200 and the Redwing 875 both were comfortable from day one. First make sure they fit well and are comfortable walking around before you buy them. If you mostly wear sneakers these will feel monstrous and clunky at first and that’s because they are freaking full grain work boots lol. Also sometimes these boots are not meant for your feet, even your gait or your lifestyle. If you can take them in a 5mile rough terrain hike without a problem you will start to like them.

I don't think the 875 is comfortable from day 1. I don't have issues with upper leather on any shoe I've owned but a lot of discomfort comes from molding the insole to your foot. That does take time and until then its like having a flat, hard board underneath your foot with the 875. The Thorogood is entirely different internally and can be comfortable from the first day.

Definitely a review aimed at those who wear these for the fashion value and not for the blue collar working man or outdoorsman. You won't find bricklayers and construction workers rolling up their jeans to show off their boots. If purchased at a Red Wing store, they'll size them for you. My Red Wing Iron Rangers ended up 1/2 size down from my sneaker size. I broke my Iron Rangers in by wearing them 1/2 day every day for about 4 weeks with thick socks. No blisters or chafing to complain about .

I don't do any sort of hard work in them and they've broken in in about 10 wears and they're super comfortable, look amazing and will be even more comfortable and look even better with age.

I was able to get a pair of the 8883's at Nordstrom Rack for $100. I got them for my dad since we're the same size and he actually does hard work, but I wore them around a bit myself the first day and man, these things are TOUGH. A 20 minute walk to the grocery store had my feet screaming to take them off. He seems to have adjusted better and I know the 8883 is a different last than the one you have, but it certainly put into perspective what everyone is talking about with the break-in of these Red Wing Mocs. I'd actually be more interested in their moc toe oxford given my line of work and would think they'd be marginally easier to break-in.

So moc toe or classic work chelsea for use as a renovations general contractor? Would be worn approx 3 to 4 days per week. We are not framers, or “rough” construction. I like the idea of the convenience of easy on and off with the work chelsea, but would like some input from anyone with experience on these.

The christy sole is very comfortable. You can check out Whites Perry too. Theyre about the same price as redwing, but looks better. About the same quality. Redback chelseas is great for work too. Probably the most comfortable sole in a boot. Can get them with steel cap toe too.

Around 12 years ago I owned 3 pairs of red wing moc toes. They were under 200 back then maybe even 150... I just bought 8138s for 260 and thats considered a good deal... geez the prices are crazy high. A good priced alternative is golden fox. They are soo good for the price to quality ratio. But even then those got fairly pricey compared to 5 years ago but they have good sales.

I second chups for style although I think something thicker to start with really helps break them in. Some Rototo are a decent choice and look good too, also I have a few pairs called endura soc from a company called V12. They don’t look very good but are the most comfy socks I have ever owned. Just be mindful with Chups that they are quite tricky to get on and off unless you have really slim feet! That being said I now own a few pairs as both my pairs of mic toes are broken in.

I was told long ago to invest in good boots and a good mattress... if you're not in one, you're in the other... I suffered through breaking in a few RW's in my formative years, however I eventually sold them all, took a hit to the back pocket, but put those clams (and quite a few more) into some 2030 Service Boots and by jingoes, every part of me is better off for it! Yeah the price:value for RWs is a bit uneven at MSRP (in my opinion). Chippewa has very similar offerings for a fraction of the price. That being said, I love both of mine and they've aged incredibly well. If youre up for the journey, yours will break in a ton more and become closer to a second skin without needing a resole. To your other point, I've had zero regrets shelling out for some Vibergs-- highly recommend

Chippewa does not have similar options. They have lost their touch. They charge $280 for a boot with QC issues. vibergs are extremely overpriced. I’m not even defending red wing, i just hate that people think that vibergs are super high end and are worth it when actually they are worth about $300.

@@StolenAlias My Chippewas were from years ago and I got them NWT second-hand for maybe $100. I'm not sure if/how they've changed but their older ones hold up equally to my RWs. I agree Vibergs are pricey given that there's only so much that can go into a boot, but their shell service boots in their 2030 are absurdly unparalleled to any other GYW I own (too many). You see the occasional horror story of shoddy stitching and loose grain, whatever, but mine are perfect and I have zero complaints. Can you go with a cheaper shell and different offering + production outsourcing through Grant Stone and still be happy? Yeah you can. Boils down to preference i suppose. Did you have a bad experience with viberg?

First, quality video as always. I like Redwing, I support made in USA products, and I even like these clunky ugly boots. However, I would never wear these. Open up Instagram and every guy and his grandma who are into selvedge denim is wearing these. Everyone copying the same look. As someone who was born and raised on a farm and familiar with manual labor, it feels odd to me when I see someone in NYC or some other large city who has never swung a hammer in his life rocking these. I get it, it's a fad or a particular style. But it's just not for me.

Love my 1907’s which are a slightly different last and easier to break in. You could always opt for the muleskinner versions too, much softer as they are suede. Vibergs are gorgeous boots, a real investment though but on my list for sure. I wear mine everyday in London as I’m on my feet as an electrical engineer and I have found that once broken in they are very comfy. I live in the countryside though and you don’t really see them anywhere apart from big cities which is kinda funny. Personally I think they look great with a nice pair of selvedge denim. I’m not on Instagram so can’t say I have been influenced there, but a dude used to drink in my local and I always thought they looked the dogs bollo#*s so got some!

Suspect if you still get blisters you may have downsized too much. I was the opposite. I downsized initially and had to go through three pairs before I finally found the right size.... In my case I up sized- went bigger because I also wear orthotics. The larger size really made it so I didn't have any blisters plus I wear thick socks with these and this no doubt adds to the comfort.
@pinchpeak5203
@pinchpeak5203 Жыл бұрын
No, his are definitely too big. The ideal size will allow you to comfortably wear both thin or thick socks. Adding an insert changes everything though. Imo orthotics are pointless in these, since if you get the right size, they will mould to your foot. Sizing up to fit the insert prevents that though..

It’s all about your foot type, some people just don’t have strong enough feet to break in the leather/cork footbed. I’ve got Iron Rangers and Roughnecks and both of them are comfortable and serve me great in my job every day. But i also spent the better part of 2 months we’re I had to use them with the laces loose and after 2 months I was finally able to put them on and tighten them all the way. But now over a year and a half later of nearly daily use outside for 8+ hours a day at work they are my most comfortable shoe.
