RED WING Moc Toes - LEGEND with a CAVEAT.

Let's chat about one of my favorite pieces of footwear- the Red Wing Moc Toe boot, particularly the 877 8 inch moc as well as the 875 6 inch moc.
Amazing boots, but with some things you should keep in mind before rushing to the store and buying. Either way, winter time is here, so protect your feet and stay stylish!

Wore these in construction for years and my dad wore them for 30+ years in construction. Pro Tip: get them wet (like soaked) when theyre new and wear them around until they dry, the leather molds to your foot and then theyll fit like gloves. Best boot ever, Im buying a pair just for everyday wear. (unfortunately my last pair got destroyed after years of welding lol)

Damn right. Just gotta get em out of the box and wear the hell out of them. Sweat in em a little bit. I don’t buy boots like some of these guys do to wear with a pair of skinny jeans around New York City. I buy them to work in, go out in, go to the mailbox in, whatever. All kinds of shit to get into in East Tennessee. They just need to wear em. They’ll break in faster. Love my 877s. Matter of fact I am about due another pair. My old pair has been rode hard and put up wet and they’ve about had it. Had them since 2013 or so. Worn them probably 90% of the time since. 2 or 3 re soles later and still kicking. Almost time to drive to Knoxville to the RedWing store for another pair. I’ve heard Thorogoods are good ones too, but idk if I could down grade from redwing like that. lol

I have the same pair and love them. I only wear them when I ride my motorcycle. They feel lightweight compared to my steel toes Red Wing.

How much does the shifter mess with the left boot? Rubber or metal?

I have the heel shifter so I don't have to get my left boot all scuffed up. And I ordered heel and toe shifter extension to give me more room to move my foot around.

Solution for the inconvience of lacing/unlacing: take them to a Red Wing store and have them install speed hooks in the top 5 or so pairs of holes. Much easier. LOVE some 8-inch-ish high boots, and speed hooks are a must.

@@edyue1 Possibly? From what I hear if they don't take care of it right then and there the Redwing will send them to the factory to be changed out for free. Downside of course is you are out your boots for a little while.

The oro legacy leather is brutal. I personally can’t do it. I got the copper rough and tough, and that works great for me. Had mine for 4 years and they are worn almost daily.

Oro Legacy looks pretty good as it patinas. But agreed initially that look isn’t for everyone. It settles into a burnt red with black wear and tear as you brush it overtime and wear it.

These are part of the heritage line which are casual boots. They can definitely be used as work boots though.

Red Wing sells an identical boot in their workboot line the #10877.

@@thedemonnemo Correct the 877 patinas better where as the 10877 is a bit more stain resistant. Besides that just the stamp difference.

I bought the Billy Boot in the same size as my Iron Rangers and my Rovers and find the Billy Boot a little bit to small, mainly to narrow. I should have gone up a half size. After a long brake in period they are oké but just some days they feel to small/narrow.

I agree with your other poster, I am an 11.5D in both feet and wear an 11D in medium weight wool socks in the last 23 (877 moc toe, etc.) In the Red Wing Iron Ranger and Blacksmith(last 8), I am a full size down and wear a size 10.5D. I recommend trying them yourself and find out.

No, in fact I've found with my Iron Ranger pair of Red Wings that the leather will like to suck any water that splashes on em. Unless you thoroughly condition and "waterproof" them with some product

As long as you ain’t wading up to your knees you’ll be fine in em. Condition them in something that repels water. I haven’t had my feet get wet in mine yet and mine are 10 years old and hav even thru 2-3 re soles. I’ll warn you now tho, it’ll take a minute to break them in. Matter of fact you’ll probably hate them at first, but you have to push thru it and they’ll turn into the finest, most comfortable boot you’ve ever had on your feet.

I dunno with these moctoe style boots. To me, they just look so ugly. Mainly due to the white sole, which look really impractical as well. Slippery? Easy to stain? At the same time I’m somehow intrigued by these as well. So I’ll probably end up buying these sooner or later haha (875).

I will say this, the 877 is far more comfortable than the last 8. It is a whole cut piece of leather that wraps around the back as opposed to the shorter 6” moc. In addition the 10877, 8830, and 877 all have a roomier toe box as opposed to the shorter moc. Comfort over style for me and you can always change the traction tred outsole(blown rubber Christie sole) once worn down, to the chemigum which is often used without a shank. The 877 as a whole really needs a shank if using the cork nitrile sole/mini lug/lug sole and from what the employee at Redwing told me they won’t do it. There are a few cobblers that will install a 3 ribbed shank, a leather midsole, and the outsole of your choice though.
