In Chapter 23, Poli told us the story about a person who Spreading Gospel about Goddess Squad. Too bad he is no longer exist. But it's easy to see that that person was Oswald. No matter how the Central Government want to hide about Goddess Squad, he will spreading all of Goddess Squad achievement, until his death.

Fore sure. I was of course pissed at Oswald back during The Over Zone, but a story doesn't necessarily need a villain in the "I'm so evil!" mustache twirling sense. Conflict can come from characters simply having conflicting goals and purposes. The Goddess Squad had their mission and Oswald had his. The two cannot both be achieved at the same time.

For me oswald pretty must the goverment dogs if he really good guys he will act like our shikikan, goddess shikikan, anderson, ingrid, mustang, even nikke like exia or the underworld queens. Something interesting to note is that in Chapter 23 (The Forgotten Name in the archives) Poli and Miranda are showing Dorothy around the ark and they find a goddess statue. Dorothy asks "Why have they erected these statues" with Poli responding about how that "they're the saviors of humankind" and "They volunteered to remain on the surface and fight until the bitter end, all in order to keep mankind safe". Dorothy ponders about why there isn't much information on them with Poli responding "Because so much time has passed" which we all know is a load of rubbish given what we know about the Central Government but what she says after might be referring to Oswald. Poli - "There used to be a person who proactively spread the gospel of the Goddess squad, but ever since they passed away, the information has been lost to time". Dorothy - "Could you give me their name, by any chance?" Only for Poli to mention she wasn't sure what their name was but it'd be hard to imagine it wasn't Oswald after learning how much he idolized Goddess Squad thanks to the RED ASH event. I'm under the impression that even though he had to leave Goddess Squad locked out the ark in Overzone (not by his own choice) he continued to spread their good deeds and exploits up until his death. He really did idolize them.

looking back at this, its interesting how dorothy asked for his name. We can either interpret this as her being interested in the persons name to thank them or to acknowledge them, or it can be dorothy wanting to know their last name so that she can track their family bloodline and take revenge, you know how she said "I'll kill your children, grandchildern" etc. Knowing how dorothy can hold a grudge

But Oswald in RedAsh reveals he is part of the central government, and in Overzone he said the vote to leave them out was unanimous. Also the central government wanted RedHood dead, and again Oswald is part of that. The Goddess commander was MIA in Overzone (I think on imprisoned for he’s reaction to the decision) and he must be the one that kept their memory alive not Oswald, the one that is part of the central Government.

Considering how the CG was willing to effectively kill the Commander and Counters just for the chance to experiment on Marian, I'm leaning more towards the theory that he locked them out to protect them. Being a CG pawn, he probably knew to some extent that if they returned to the Ark they would be turned into test subjects. So he likely misinformed chain of command on purpose ("Goddess Squad has deserted/gone AWOL") and then told Dorothy the doors couldn't be opened. If he really were cruel, why would he give a superhuman his hame?

While Oswald had to bear leaving them outside of the Ark, he did keep the promise to inmortalize and let the Ark citizens revere the Goddess Squad, what some people fail to see is, during Overzone, the pauses he does when he is giving instructions, with the added context, we can see how they weight on him, but learning from Red Hood denying being taken to the Ark, he forces himself to endure his own feelings, if we didnt know how there is basically Goddess statues all around the ark and even the outpost, we can tell he did all he could to let people not forget what they represent

I still don't fully trust Oswald, even after this. Over Zone supposedly takes place years after Red Ash. A man can change within that time. Still, he did repair Red Hood's treasured keepsake and helped out in her time of need, and for that he has some of my respect.

I've come up with another theory about Oswald that makes it even more tragic. SInce he was in central Govt, he likely overheard what they were intending to do with the goddess squad after the ark was completed. So Oswald decided to make them hate the ark, telling them all that BS about the new and improved generation of Nikke already entering mass production. A clear lie given no nikke has managed to even MATCH the power of Goddess. So rather than allow the heroes to become guineapigs for greedy and selfish politicians and researchers...he set them free. Even if it meant being hated by them.

for survival...sometimes the hardest decisions have to be made even if it breaks the very person making them...oswald loved and adored the godess squad...he admired them to the very depths of his heart..you can see that with his interaction with red hood..and having to be the one to tell the people he adored that he cant let them in..to be the one to doom the very squad he adored..must have broken him..he must have lived his life wishing to meet one of the godess squad where he would gladly give his life to make amends..but instead i assume he lived the rest of his life praising the godess squad telling stories so the people of the ark would never forget them..he must have erected statues of them..hoping that the guilt would lessen..but its not that easy..he died knowing the squad he adored and admired hated him and that he was the very reason for their doom..what a sad life this man has lived... it makes you think huh..that a man once hated by the community for betraying the godess squad..could maybe have this kind of backstory..that he didnt want to betray them but was forced to..that he tried to make amends..to die with guilt...sad

It's funny how I first played Red Hood Event and then when I started OVER ZONE, when I met Oswald as an official ARK agent who held Good Squad in high regard and respected him even though he was Nikke, he showed his warm gratitude when he spoke to one of his Red Hood members. When his betrayal comes (something I didn't see coming), you still can't hate him because he knows he's somehow not doing it out of malice? but because there was no other option, in case someone was infected or at the request of someone from his superiors who, to save what was left of humanity, had to deny paradise to those who idolized the most for all their struggle, it must have been painful for him. Oswald is not really a bad person, just someone who had to act for the good of humanity.

Ether and Oswald are quite similar in some ways. Ether is a helpless undercover altruist who must be condemned and hated by everyone as to not arouse suspicion so her plans to expose M.M.R. through someone else can bear fruition as she herself has no influence. Oswald is a Goddess fan who, while is higher-up in the central government, ultimately had no influence and was helpless when he had to be the bringer of bad news to Goddess squad. Neither of them enjoy what they have to do, both of them seem rather depressed.

I think Oswald is more similar to Marciana rather than Ether, because Ether is still willing to do what she can for humanity, and doesn't really regret it. Marciana, however, is trying to show the issues with the military, and tries to spread the word to us, like how Oswald, presumably, tried to spread the word about how the goddesses were.

@@raawesome3851 Marciana and Ether are pretty much the same character motive-wise. Ether is more of a leader the way I see it. We don’t know if she regrets it or not because it seems she’s playing a facade. Chances are she regrets it and can’t show it, otherwise why help? What you described from Marciana also applies to Ether. In Oswald’s case, there are 2 possibilities: he’s merely a helpless messenger who could be replaced (akin to Ether being a helpless wage-slave who can also be replaced) or he lied to protect Goddess because the Ark wants to disassemble them (a catalyst for action akin to Ether). Marciana’s hands aren’t tied, she never initiated any sort of action, and she’s never had to look bad. This makes her nothing like Oswald and Ether through a narrative and characterization standpoint. She just isn’t willing to take risks and fight back nor undertake an unsavoury position.

My first impression of Oswald was that he looked like an SMT character with a Jigsaw-like demeanor. But in all seriousness, It was pretty cool that they revealed the face to the name from Overzone. This game does a pretty good job with its character building; especially with the npcs. I understand her getting angry, but I thought Dorothy went too far when she threatened this guy and his family. Hopefully they'll show his POV from that interaction.

@@zanard33 Honestly, looking back in Overzone, his interactions were a bit weird even without Red Ash context. At the day of closing the Ark entrance and his goodbye to the Goddess squad, his words seemed awfully scripted and forced. He desperately says several reasons why he won't open the door, too many and too fast that it sounds like it was made up on the spot. Not to mention, when he introduced himself, he identified himself as the messenger between the squad and the government, so its pretty obvious any report he says to them comes from the government. Honestly, I feel like back then he was sending a secret message to the squad to not enter the Ark for their safety, like stating the governing body was hectic and chaotic, probably implying that they were hectic not due to the mass migration in the Ark but from the possibility of the Goddess squad taking away their golden ticket as the top power inside the Ark. They were scrambling cause that was their only chance to seize power all the while being safe from Raptures and the possibility of the squad to be wiped out guarding the entrance. It was probably what would've happened to the Goddess squad if they had returned to the Ark, hence why Oswald locked them out. But it's just a theory.

Honestly, when I went through the Overzone event, I hated this character. But once the Red Hood event went through I realized something... he wasn't the villan at all. He respected the goddesses. If he can, he would have fought for the last breath to save them. But the fact that he couldn't save them broke him more and more throughout his communication. It was never his choice... He was just the messenger. But a warrior who respected their comarads.

I don't know if you already reached Ch 23 or not, but yeah... In Ch 23, Poli mentioned about someone in the past, who spreading the 'Gospel' (I think it's indeed a match word for something like that) about Goddess Squad, eventhough Central Government Agency hide everything about Goddess Squad. And yeah, we suspect that the person was actually Oswald. So he fulfill his promised, to let all of Goddess Squad's achievement been known throughout the Ark.
