Yes it's completely revolting. Good server/bar tenders make bank though even though most make minimum wage. Depending on where they work they can make way more money than you'd think. I know a couple bartenders that usually make $250+ in tips for a short shift pretty much everynight + the wage in a decently busy place. I know one lady that regularly makes over 600+ a night just in tips. It's a different culture. If you're not great at service get another job that isn't based in tips. Nobody is forcing anybody to do the work and most the mid-teir service people I know have plenty of money and a better work life balance than most people. The thing that really disgusts me is hearing waiters and bartenders complain about only getting 20% of the bill as a tip... and the expectation placed on customers. If i spend $30-50 dollars on a medicore meal with 1-2 beers the "expected tip" is 6-11$ bucks minimum. I usually give 50%+ more than that despite resenting the expectation, even if the service is only OK, but places assume I'm poor and won't tip well and will clearly treat you way worse. From the jump. Lots of waiters and server will give you attitude and treat you as a nuisance because they assume your not going to tip well. Some of the same ones I've heard complain about not getting enough from customers. This is very common in the service industry here 🤔 I heard a bartender last month pissed off because the person only tipped $30 on like a $180 bill. Like what? That's somewhere between 15-20%, They were here for an hour or so and you had 12 different parties at the same time. And you aren't splitting tips with anyone... she's probably making more than $100 an hour that night for serving drinks and taking food orders and she's pissed off about it? Like maybe the dude can only afford so much money and he's paying for his whole family... he probably doesn't even make half of what that bartender does, and he has to work longer hours. They didn't even have to pay taxes on tips until recently in a lot of places. Food is already crazy expensive in US and food business usually has pretty bad margins.... they can make bank during peak hours but they loss money during the rest of the day, unless it complete fast food garbage but even then its pretty cutthroat most of the time. it would be completely unaffordable for most people to eat out if they increased the wages and the restaurant would lose business and shut down. Even if they stayed in business lots of service workers would probably make significantly less if we did what UK does. Not very generous tippers over there. Rounding your bill out and adding a couple pounds results in far less compensation for many service workers despite the higher wages. But at least your the worst of your servers have a living wage i guess... I wonder if that might be a reason you guys have famously bad customer service over there...
