The cases and discs aren't paired or associated with each other in any way, the cases are simply to protect the discs and make engineering the kiosk robots much more straightforward. You can actually own Redbox kiosks for free. I haven't done it but I've heard that a lot of stores with them basically just want them gone, and if you ask nicely enough they'll let you load it onto your pickup and take it home. Also there's still at least one working Redbox kiosk near me, I checked about a week ago.
@dieseldragon67562 ай бұрын
_Working?_ That's interesting, as it sounds like RedBox's whole back-end was taken down when the company folded. I never used RedBox myself (They never traded in the UK) but at a guess they were using from-kiosk sales as a way of disposing of unwanted/surplus inventory. @dieseldragon67562 ай бұрын
Closest we ever had to RedBox in the UK were a few experimental Blockbuster rental machines (Which rented out VHS cassettes) but these never caught on. Incidentally, the RedBox kiosks identified the disks via the DataMatrix codes near the center hole, which is why the photocopy trick worked with them. 💸 That center hole coding system is also why you might occasionally find a movie from 2005 in a very new case, and a 2023 movie in one old enough to belong in a museum; The cases are simply a protective shell for the disc which makes engineering the kiosk robot easier, and aren't attached/paired to the disc in any way. 😇

Legally everything including the machines have been officially abandoned as of the last few weeks or so. Illegally stores are able to do whatever they want with the machines so if you ask the store owners managers etc they may just give them to you if you have the proper equipment. This was the result of a lawsuit that Dollar general was pending on getting approval to dispose of the machines because they were eating electricity costs.
