ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT - Calum being so candid without the slightest gossip and throwing anybody under the bus. When Calum decides to stay home can he not work at Red Bull HQ? I'm sure there is a HUGE amount of work there for someone at his skill level and experience ?

This is a brilliant story to hear, the start of his career is very similar to what mine is like now. I recently got made redundant from the garage I was working at, struggled to find another job because I don’t have a level 3, and now I’m going to the same college he went to at Silverstone to train to be a motorsport technician.

I worked in American LeMans and Grand Am prior to that for about 8 years. Luckily got to do Daytona 24 and LeMans quite a few times. I don’t think many fans realize the amount of crossover in the pitlane from F1 to those series. I can say though the first time you open up the garage door and walk out into pitlane at LeMans is definitely something special and something you never forget.

I spent just over 23 years in the sport, started at Willys (testing then raceteam)… went to RB for 5 years on raceteam then finished my days off at the FIA. We the people that do this job is our choice, we spend so much time away from family, friends etc but there’s always FaceTime!! It’s hard or it can be if you make it, I’ve seen grown men in tears when we used to go away for winter testing for 7 weeks (inc car launch & sponsors videos) when they speak to there kids they burst into tears… it’s hard for them. Personally having no kids was a bonus, missed my golden retriever the most, glad I’m done it, miss the driving part to be honest which was our chill time in the trucks. I’m proud of what I’ve done & achieved no matter what people say.

I can't agree more with that statement 11:31. Professionally I'm and IT Consultant and that also applies there. I'm also a hobbyist. And a Technical University graduate. And I'm 41. And my experience shows, that as much as it is tempting to "jump over the boring stuff, and get right into the bells and whistles and the newest tech", the basics of working with little tech and doing stuff manually, gives you the best background for utilizing the newest tech to it's best, and filling in the gaps with your experience, where the tech fails to do so. Although I understand it might be hard to convince a young apprentice to use old-school methods, when there is a modern tech available. But succeeding in this will make that apprentice so much more valuable long-term. For him and for whoever he's working for.

I bet Calum would rock the outfits Lewis is wearing even better because he's tall.
@Buzzin-4713 күн бұрын
Why him? There are lots of taller folk in the paddock or in the world for that matter. Just curious why him? 😉
@alicekoppenol-pitti625713 күн бұрын
@buzzin-hornet because Calum carries himself in a way that an outfit would never overpower his personality. The fact that he's tall is a plus because for some of the outfits Lewis is a bit too short to my liking.
@Buzzin-4713 күн бұрын
@ I was more wondering if it was his colour of skin that had you compare him to Lewis? I’m not calling racism here, just wondered if it was a subconscious connection you had made. Him and Lewis are both black in a sport that is predominantly white.
@alicekoppenol-pitti625713 күн бұрын
@buzzin-hornet I will be honest and admit that the colour of his skin does make a difference because those clothes need that melanine to shine in my opinion.

11:00 We had Apprenticeship for many different types of work, like welder and electricians here in Sweden, some had 5 years others 7 years lite electricians, my dad had a electricians Apprenticeship then he was 18, very low pay, super low, but you could survive on it. After the 7 years he did become a regular electricians, and after xx years and some more education and certification test´s you could become a Master electrician. But what i know that system of paid Apprenticeship was ended in the early 1980is in Sweden, but i think we need that system to come back! and it sounds like UK needs it also. so i agree with Nicholas, not only cuz we both has the same name, Nicholas as my first name but it´s a valid point he brings up here.

59:27 "If we can broaden our reach, what you'll see is natural diversity" THIS. Exactly this. Diversity should be naturally occurring if there's enough selection and the talent. F1 as a whole is instead forcing it down our throats with all these political feeder series.

I fail to see what his skin colour has to do with him being in the pitlane. Considering the percentage of black people in the UK and how many if them choose to follow the same career path, it sounds about what you would expect. You could just as well figure out how many redheads are in the pitlane.

Sorry Callum but DEI has no place in any STEM field. You said it yourself that you worked hard to get it. We want the best people for the job period. You are an inspiration to people and that is great but dont buy into that waste of time. That inspiration should be for the inspired to work harder. I tell young mechanics all the time. if a man can build it, you can fix it.
