Adding to other people's points, 2ne1, YG's previous girl group, disbanded just months before Blackpink's debut even though they were big as well. So naturally, people would have lots of anticipation for BP. And then Du ddu du ddu was that song that made them blow up in the international scene.

This was BlackPink's debut song, along with "Whistle" & so this is basically the group's intro to the rest of the world. As was discussed, the call & response & antheming might have been repetitive, but as already noticed, this genre is practically EDM. If you might already know, EDM is repetitive, it's supposed to be because it is dance music. Whatever the case, these are the songs that YG chose for the group to debut with. It's supposed to be fun but fierce, which is what the thematic juxtaposition of what the message, and colors, of what BlackPink is supposed to be.

Fellas, I’ve enjoyed your conversations and appreciate the dive into each song but if you don’t understand the hype over Blackpink it’s gonna be pretty difficult to explain. First, your complaint about Boombayah going too long or dragging out and having basically no progression through out I’d probably agree with you. Thing is, this is a debut song that that hit #1 on Billboard World Digital Charts with Whistle right behind at #2 and they won awards for it 2 weeks after it’s release(the fastest at that time for a girl group to do so). Second, you won’t find the “too long” or “no change up” complaint with their other tracks. Most times the complaint is that it’s too short or they weren’t ready for it to end and most artists/musicians can’t how many times their songs switch up seamlessly. Lastly, if you take the time to actually get to know the girls, all of them, and their story you’ll begin to understand the draw. You talk about Jennie and Lisa all the time without ever mentioning Jisoo or Rose’ which explains how much you don’t know about this group. They’re more than rappers, singers, dancers, and pretty faces. When you figure that out, you might begin to get an understanding. Their several million stans aren’t stans just because but for good cause. So compare them to other groups all you want and think what you want. It’s your prerogative…as it is ours to warrant our following of the BIGGEST, MOST POPULAR GIRL GROUP ON THE PLANET. Btw, you’re right, the #’s aren’t everything but they also don’t lie. Just sayin…

This song and whistle made them popular plus they are a new girl group in yg entertainment after the disbandment of their seniors 2ne1. What made Blackpink so popular in their rookie days is because they do the girl crush concept, they are from yg and their songs are lit. If I'm not mistaken the era where Blackpink debuted was full of girl groups doing some cutesy concept and then there's Blackpink who did the Girl crush concept and things had change by then. As of now, many ggs are debuting with some girl crush concept and despite of that Blackpink still remains superior despite of some new groups plus Blackpink girls are special, unique in their own ways.

For me, I love the girls themselves, the same as how I love the boys themselves from BTS, that's why I follow their updates and comebacks and stuff, like I knew BTS by random funny fan videos, so I literally liked them as them first then as artists, same goes for blackpink for me, I knew the four girls before I knew blackpink, so does that mean they are not talented? I don't get why BTS had to be included in a breakdown of BlackPink. They make totally different music and also have more creative freedom,writing and producing credits. I hate that they seem to have great potential but their company is keeping them in this box. I don't know comparing groups but Itzy, Twice , Gfriend(still sad about), Mamamoo, Aespa and so many more groups out here go so hard on choreography and lyrics.

The questions you guys are asking about YG being trendsetters should lead you to the ones who made YG trendy with Teddy having a major part. It should lead you to look at BigBang, G-Dragon, PSY and 2NE1. The anthem sound came in with BigBang, mostly the song Bang Bang Bang (2015). You guys haven't touched the ones who made YG the cool kids. YG senior artist were what drove modern k-pop to how it looks and sounds.

@@REDEMPTION46 Yes, but the major popularity of BlackPink is a hold over of fans from the previous groups. YG just disbanded 2NE1 and a good amount of them came from those fans. Who was responsible 2NE1's sound? It was Teddy. The music print was easier for fans of the OG group to recognize, they inherited some of the stable fans from the senior artist. YG stated that they trained BlackPink with 2NE1's blueprint. Before debut BlackPink members were on tracks with G-Dragon and appearing in his videos.

You asked what trend drove fans to them in 2016, then you said it had to be something from 2015. The song Bang Bang Bang (Teddy & G-Dragon produced) in 2015 had drove the trend in k-pop on a whole this is before BP entered the game. There are hardcore YG fans, who love all things YG whether it be new groups, old groups, the actors, the model etc. Their popularity was boosted by the label value, just like you mentioned, fan's attachment from watching variety and behind the scenes. For a lot of fans worldwide it was like "Okay from YG cool kids here come BP, so lets check them out" and it was more the song Du-Du-Du that attracted people coupled with the video and people came to compare it to Bang Bang Bang since it has a similar signature sound.

Chloe just dropped a single 'Have Mercy' aside from the fact that they are no doubt talented and deserve attention. The fact that they are signed to Beyonce makes people take a double look they want see Beyonce's protégé...did Chloe inherit fans from Beyonce? I'm sure she did.

Its obvious they are doing something right. just because the music doesn’t suit their taste does not mean it wont appeal to someone else. My man said it cant be the music. Lol eh bruh everyone can have their own taste in music. why would hundreds of millions of people around the world continue to listen to something they dont like. I’m not a blink but I do enjoy them. I think they gained their popularity because YG hadn’t had a girl crush group since 2NE1 and when Blackpink was announced, people were shook. They are attractive, have charisma, were fresh, and honestly kinda westernized in terms of the style of music. Personally, their superior songs are Ddu Ddu Ddu and Kill this Love. Whistle is also a great song too. Idk what song got people to stan them but Whistle made me like them. Tbh, I think they were pushed on us but I’m not complaining. I like their live performances, their charisma, and personalities but I don’t stan them. For me, I like their songs Ddu Ddu Ddu, Kill this Love, Pretty Savage, Don’t Know What To Do, Lovesick Girls, Ice Cream, Forever Young, Kick It, As If It’s Your Last, Whistle, and Playing with Fire. The problem I’ve always had with Blackpink is that they don’t put out music often enough for me to fall in love with them as an idol group. They make great instagram influencers and they do have talent but I need more music.

I think BLACKPINK's Fanbase is a bit difficult too understand and I don't mean their attitude or anything also not why it is so big but just how and why it is SO loyal. Because you see fourth generation groups for example Itzy, Stray Kids, TXT, ATEEZ, ... Great reaction and very interesting points that you made. As to your comment that you like songs with deeper meanings. They do have songs that have complex symbolism, like Kill This Love, where there is Freudian Id/Ego/Super Ego symbolism along with Greek Mythological symbolism (see KZbin Video English Priest Reacts to Kill This Love), or How You Like That, where a Cambridge University graduate in Greek Classism discusses scene by scene symbolism in Greek Mythology, where each member is actually portraying a different Greek Goddess that overcame female subjugation to triumph and even touches on the numerous Idols driven to suicide by hateful netizens (see KZbin Video English Priest Reacts to How You Like That). So, there is great depth and symbolism in some of their songs. But you don't have to know all that to appreciate the visuals and music. But just know there is a tremendous amount of effort that goes into injecting very intelligent and deep symbolism in some of their songs.
