"Number one" Some may identify this song with a relationship of lovers, but for me this song transported me to those times when I was fighting to be number one in the eyes of my father who abandoned us for his second family and I did not understand the reason. Like me, I know that many others have remembered their own story when listening to this intimate and beautiful song. After all, there is always someone special who you hope to be their number one, regardless of whether you are a boy or a girl.

For more context about this song, this is from her interview with New York Times that came out yesterday: Interviewer: "Number One Girl.” When I listened, it felt as if it could be about a romantic relationship or about a relationship with fame and celebrity. One of the lyrics goes, “Tell me I’m that new thing, tell me that I’m relevant.” Can you talk to me a little bit about that song? Rosé: "That song was written after a terrible night of scrolling through the internet till like 6 a.m., and I barely got any sleep. I walked up to the studio the next day very cranky, and they asked me, “How have you been?” And I was like: “Very bad. I’m so exhausted. I’m exhausted trying to please everyone.” I’m always just trying my best to be my best version, but I felt a little lost and like I was never good enough. I was a bit cranky against the world. And I wanted to write a song that’s just so, like, disgustingly open and honest. Things that I hate myself for thinking - all those thoughts that are written in those lyrics are thoughts that I don’t want to admit that I actually think. Because I like to present myself as a very positive girl who doesn’t think about negative things, who’s very bright-minded. But that was honestly the day I was like, nope." Interviewer: What were you watching online? Rosé: "Comments. Just searching topics that were not going to necessarily satisfy me. Rabbit holes of negative comments. I don’t think I knew what I was searching for, but I was looking for validation and, wow, it was a lonely world that night on the internet. And as I was writing the song, I felt there must be so many other girls who experienced this. I just want people to know that I’m no different."

3:00 😞🙏🏼Please don't say you are embarrassing yourself, because you showed vulnerability. I think THIS was Rosé's intent, to strip us down to our most vulnerable selves. I agree with everything you said, & felt the same way❤️. Don't be ashamed to be emotional, because you aren't the only one. It takes a lot of strength to accept & express these type of raw emotions. You did it on a public forum, like our sweet Rosé. That makes YOU as strong as Rosé, for letting us see YOU❤️

Rosé pretty much wrote the entire album which is why it took so long. She almost didn't want to release APT because so much of the album was her personally and was nervous about sharing way too much about herself. To think that song she was apprehensive about releasing it since it promoted a drinking game and then her next single ends up being this song. It kind of shows the struggle of an artist letting go of her creation to show to the world. Her album is going to be insanely successful just with these 2 songs alone.
