BRO, this is honestly my most treasured memory of my mom. we were poor, like poor poor. like i learned how to use candles to take a bath before 8 poor. but i loved the turtles. 10 outta 10 would watch again. my mom surprised me with 2 tickets to the PREMEIER. the theater had all 4 turtles, stickers, posters, and candy. i had a blast. come to find out, as an adult. she literally worked OT, walked to work instead of the bus, and saved up for those tickets because i guess it was a special event and not just a movie. That and my NES were serious core memories.

I was born w/ a debilitating disease so, a lot of my childhood was spent in and out of hospitals. I, too, remember ALWAYS watching this or the second movie w/ the TV/VCR the nurses wheeled in. I watched it so much, it became a comfort type of thing 4 me and I'd watch it 2 fall asleep. I remember usually waking up 2 "T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!" or "Mic check, 1,2,1,2..." Even tho I was sick, I consider those good times. 🥰

You can thank Jim Henson's Creature Shop for designing the costumes. It was one of the last projects Jim Henson himself worked on before he passed away shortly after the movie's premier. They also did the designs for the costumes in the second movie, which incredibly came out nearly a year after the first movie.

Little piece of international version trivia: I grew up on the French version, and after Casey Jones gets Raphael stuck into a garbage can and runs away, he yells "Salut pédé, j'ai du boulot!" which translates to "Later, fa***t, I got work to do!" (with Raphael angrily repeating the taunt while trying to extirpate himself out of the can). For the DVD release, the movie was redubbed and they changed the line to "le monstre!" ("[Bye], freak!" same meaning as in the original English version). Still, it's incredible that they put that slur (which at the time was a very commonplace schoolyard insult) into a kids movie. The 90s were crazy.

this movie was made by an independent studio yet somehow got Jim Henson to design the suits and despite being made fun of at the time was one of the biggest box office draws in terms of its backing. how do you have rubber turtle suits convey such emotion, that scene with Raph and Splinter, i get choked up everytime.

The Shinobi manuals of Hattori Hanzō had detailed training for Multi-Ninja Wallet Theft. Ninjtsu was invented in order to pick Oda Nobunaga's pockets. One thing I appreciate about TV and Movie gangs in the 1980's and into the early 1990's is the diversity. The average gang would have 1 white scumbag, 1 black scumbag, 1 Latino scumbag. Usually headbands, too. If they were in larger groups they usually had at least 1 girl scumbag, although since they're doing a "lost boys" thing we don't have one. And they're usually one disabled nerd scumbag away from being the Burger King Kids Club. April is prepared for the weather thanks to the raincoat she always wears, although I think the cartoon jumpsuit is more forward-thinking. Critters. Raphael's flasher coat should keep attention away from his giant green head. A thing I found funny as a child: In the movie, the promotion is with Dominos Pizza. The NES TMNT 2: The Arcade Game released the same year had Pizza Hut tie ins. Ninjas do work as collectors for Sony. Oda Nobunaga was late on payments for his Beta VCR. Elias Koteas (Casey Jones) is a legit great actor. I recommend The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica. Both are extremely, extremely sad movies, but for Exotica you have to take a big leap of faith to believe you can get a lap dance for $5CDN, even at 1994 prices. I'm not worried about Shredder's kids. They've got a copy of NARC in their Arcade. They'll stay off drugs. As cool as the Henson suits are, the guys can't move in them. They fight like Steven Segal, with everyone bouncing off their little moves. Except at least the guys in the suits trying. Leo is a Xenomorph. The other mouth comes out and kills you. TMNT was published by Archie at the time For some reason, the "do you like penicillin on your pizza?" has always stuck with me. Not in a good way, just stuck there. I had already learned in school how penicillin was made so I got the joke, but found it weird. Splinter vs. Turtles is like banging two action figures together. They can turn and bump into each other, but not bend.
