Redfall: Failure Has A New Name

Redfall is an exceptional game for all the wrong reasons. Its like someone tried to make a video game using AI, and then removed the AI from all the enemy NPCs. It is a terrible game. All the more strange that the horde of KZbinrs and review sites that previewed the game just before launch, somehow failed to notice that this game was a pile of stinking crap, and worst game of the year contender. Funny that. I guess you cant buy loyalty, but positive reviews can be bought for cheap.

Arkane is living proof tha you can survive on decades on hype alone. The Dishonored games were a total borefest, Prey was mediocre, Wolfenstein Youngblood was bad, Deathloop was terrible and now Redfall is a downright disaster. I also got invited to a launch event in Berlin. Got to play the game 2 weeks before anyone else. The location was beautiful. Everything made to look just like I imagined bases would look like in the game. We got free food and drinks and an interview session with some devs that flew in to Berlin just for that event. I was honestly blown away by how much thought they put into everything. Then we played the game and 10 minutes later I was back at the buffet drowning my disappointment in coke zero and raspberry cupcakes

To be honest, I think Postal 2 is a far more stable game with every element it possesses being better than anything Redfall has. It might crash occasionally, but at least the NPCs seem to have some level of intelligence and the gameplay is genuinely enjoyable. Oh, and it's also Postal 2, so that immediately makes it a better game. I doubt any of us can argue that last point.

I try and avoid KZbin drama and normally never cite anyone directly, but the Redfall previews were frankly too important to skirt around. I have yet to find a single reviewer that took a look at Redfall and said "this is terrible". Kind of makes them redundant reallyl. It sticks out to me that traveling somewhere just for 1.5 hours with a game seems like a waste of time, yet you could see how excited people were about doing it. Over the last few years, companies would send preview builds to people, and now are right back to something seemingly less efficient. I suspect they decided that letting people see the games for themselves without the 'exciting' paid trip and contolled environment wasn't as profitable.

I feel really bad for my gf. She was looking forward to this for *years*, being that the premise is what her ideal game would look like: Co-op, open world, vampires. I knew it was going to be a fermented abortion but didn't have to heart to say anything. But I almost jumped out my chair and shouted "NO!" when she was on the store page, asking if she should preorder. I just reminded her of how disappointed she was when she bought Deathloop. "Just wait, never preorder anything." I said stoically. Luckily, she played Redfall on my Game Pass account. She was oddly silent about it, never said anything to my knowledge. Never played a single time beyond release day.

Honestly, Im not going after anyone mate, but the Redfall preview fiasco is a big deal and I need to bring it up. I hope the evidence speaks for itself. It was a catch 22 scenario: If I covered it I would accused of callilng out reviewers, if I didnt address it, I would literally be covering up for people by omission. In all fairness though ... all I did was use their own public domain statements about the game. If they ended up being a list of promotional statements, using the same stock footage, and vaguely embarrasing.... well it is their words not mine. I played this game. Got to the final boss. It was set up where you needed to activate three pillars or whatever to damage the boss. Every now and then she would attack you, and one of these attacks throws you back. You have to press x on the pillar for about 5 seconds. Just enough time to watch the attack come in and push you back. The last pillar was glitched. This raging dumpster fire wouldn’t even allow me the pleasure of actually finishing it.

The plan with gamepass could be summed up by the WEF. "You will own nothing and be happy". On top of that I'm thinking you'll be allowed to "play" most of the games but in order to play them long enough to beat them, "unlock" all of the better gear, weapons, vehicles, levels and quests you'll need to shell out more for content for games you don't even own. It’s such a shame because a vampire hunting game in sleepy, sea-side New England town is my dream game. Salems Lot meats Far Cry crossed with Alan Wake would be a joy. The biggest insult is that they included the ability to turn on sink taps for no reason while actual gameplay mechanics are completely broken and underdeveloped.

I ... Will ... Never ... EVER ... pre-order a video game! Lesson learned on TLOU. I didn't even buy redfall. Saw the trailer footage and thought "oh ...that's gonna be the next game people will hate". Hate isn't a too strong word to use on a video game. It's a human emotion and we are lucky to be able to experience hate and the opposite. Amen !

Luckily for me I was the idiot nr2- game pass owner. After official gameplay trailer dropped I was rather looking forward to to game, and when I did the first benchmark I was... absolutely confused. Sub-par performance with or without DLSS, no graphical fidelity (this is payday 2 level, at best) and non-existant combat. Let alone fetch quests. I knew something was off, but even back in day 1 launch, I did not find the energy to go deeper, and was happy i did not fork out a fortune for this mess. However, your review outlined all of the things that were in back of my mind while playing it. Calling this game trash, would be an insult to trash. Great review Sir!

My yearly Game Pass subscription was due shortly after redfall was released. I've had it for 4 years, I let it lapse. Something had better change drastically with Xbox before I lose all hope and jump off this platform.

I quit playing modern games entirely in 2017 when the Switch came out, did a whole ton of things I didn't like, tricked every Nintendo fan into thinking it was worth a damn, and then proceeded to dominate because they were somewhat less evil than their competitors. However I saw the writing on the wall for the industry as far back as 2012, and was already thinking of quitting. I sold My Wii U and Vita early on, and only played crappy 3DS games until 2017 where I finally gave up. Channels like this give me life, because it makes me happy to know that some people still have a brain, and know how bad things have gotten. As someone who doesn't pay a cent to these companies, I love sitting back and watching everything fall apart while people are paid to pretend that everything is fine.

Ah, nothing's better than a warm evening with a beautiful sunset, a cold bottle of some refreshing beverage and a one hour long video from uncle 21Kiloton. It's good to know that I'm not the only one when it comes to being aware of just how shit gaming and entertainment in general has become. Gaming has been dying for a very long time now and people are slowly starting to wake up from the dream, but will that change anything? Perhaps things will eventually change... But one can only hope. And one thing's certain - the golden age of gaming will never return to us again. Regardless of how much you or me want it to.
