Redfin for dinner, thanks to Jan Juc fishing worms

The fishing has been incredibly slow this past couple of weeks, so to increase my chances I thought I'd use some Jan Juc fishing worms as bait. It wasn't too long at all before I started getting little nibbles, and I caught my first Redfin shortly thereafter. After getting my bait stolen a few times, I managed to hook onto what I consider to be a good sized Redfin, which I was very happy to take home and eat for dinner!

Redfin is just the name us Australians give English Perch, which were introduced to Australia in the 1860s for angling purposes.

They are very similar to yellow perch, both species originated from English Perch. They are definitely one of my favorite fish to catch and eat, so tasty!

My go-to bait fishing setup is a running sinker rig with a size 4 hook, it suits most species. The only time I change to a different size hook is if I'm fishing specifically for cod and use a bigger hook, or if there's tiny fish around and I choose a smaller hook

They don't harm native fish any more than trout. But I guess trout are a snob fish and don't compete with any fish with an angling reputation. I have killed every trout I have caught because they eat the tadpoles of rare frog species.

If it wasn't gut-hooked I would have had no issues releasing it again, I've released plenty before. I only killed that little one to get my hook back. If it was a native I would have cut my line

Hey that's awesome thanks Kelvin! I normally break through the ribs and then cut around them afterwards but that definitely looks like a very efficient way to fillet smaller reddies. I'll give it a try next time!
