Am I the only one who doesn’t give a F**K about the ability to play anywhere? All I want to do is come home, sit down in front of my S tier 4K tv, and play a great console game (or sit in front of my sadly mid tier monitor and play that same game with infinitely better performance with mouse and keyboard). I have less than no desire to stop my skateboarding session so I can sit down on the halfpipe lip and pull out my phone and attempt to stream something. I have less than no desire to be playing anything on my tablet while attending a rooftop soirée. Gimme a disc a pop into a dedicated machine and let me play it how I want

I think this is pretty common. A Spawn Wave poll showed recently that over half of us only play Switch in docked mode. I'm the same way. I play a couple dinky games on my phone. But if I'm gaming it's usually on a couch with a console connected to a big screen

Don't you ever play music from your phone? Connecting it to car stereos or some bluetooth amplifier? I think you don't realize what is happening in gaming, that people start to play their games directly from their smart-TV or perhaps have their game library downloaded in pocket, and plug phone to TV when visiting friend and start playing. We are already there that consoles and desktop computers are required for relatively small amount of game titles that are too demanding for mobile hardware.

Let's remember that the whole reason MS created the Xbox is because they were worried about PC gaming drying up in favor of consoles 25 years ago. It's named after Direct X. The PC has always been their primary target, they don't mind losing sales to themselves

PC gaming is not gonna dying, that is secured long time ago when game development tools and publishing had zero barriers in PC. However they need Xbox to distribute Xbox Game Pass compatible hardware to avoid getting blocked out from machines in long run. If subscription model fail and Microsoft plans fail, that won't affect PC gaming. PC gaming will flourish even without Windows as gamers will install games from Steam/Gog/itch/Google Play whatever they like in some other platform. DirectX API has never been relevant to game developers. Every sane developer has abstracted such things out of the game's code.

The PC market was much smaller back then. I worked at Electronics Boutique at the time and saw it all firsthand. I went to E3 in 2001 and played the Xbox before it even came out.

Thats not why it was created. Xbox was created cuz "Sony was taking over the living room" and Microsoft wanted parts of that money but they were a software company at the time, not into hardware and Bill Gates was against it at 1st. He had to be convinced. Had nothing to do with pc gaming drying up. PC wasn't their primary target during the 1st 3 Xbox consoles, it is now which is why the SX is kinda set up like a PC but with split memory.

But their goal is just owning the platform, whether that's on a PC or console. And at the start, PC was their existing platform as while Xbox was an expansion. Direct X kept PC gaming locked in to Windows, and they wanted a way to embrace and extend their control into the console space. They were also pushing their WebTV boxes hard at this time too as they tried to figure out moving from the desktop to the living room

I wonder if PS6 can be handheld/console hybrid like the switch. Like imagine the handheld will be able to play games at 1080p 165hz+. Then when it's docked it gets more power because the dock will have a dedicated gpu and psu that can play games at 1080p 360hz+, 1440p 240hz+, and or 4k 120hz+.

I sincerely felt sorry for myself for how stupid I've been especially as I later discovered that the only Fifa games worth playing are 17 and 18. They legitimately don't make games like they used to, and the few new ones that are worth playing are usually either multiplatform games available on PC, indie titles that are on PC first (or flat out PC exclusive), or are Switch exclusives. Seeing as how I own a PC and a Switch, I have no reason to get either current generation console. It's kind of a silver lining in a way, as a lack of interesting games gives me time to go through my massive backlog of games I've built over the years, mostly thanks to Steam sales. I've got more than enough titles to last me a lifetime, and I get the feeling there are many others out there like me who wouldn't bat an eye if the video game industry completely stopped making new games due to their massive backlogs as well.

I remember the "beastly" rumors about the PS5 and the disappointment when the reality was announced. It's too early to predict the PS5 Pro specs, much less the PS6. I do think Sony will test the upper bounds of console pricing with the PS5 Pro. The argument that they will recoup their loss leader is offset by the fact that most Pro buyers are upgrading. They're already PlayStation owners/subscribers.

It has been confirmed what the PS5 pro specs are. AMD zen 2 8 core 16 thread cpu clocked at 4.2-4.4 ghz AMD RDNA 3 based GPU with some customization to the GPU with AI/ML hardware to accelerate Sonys version of TAA upscaling similar to DLSS/FSR with either 56 or 60 cu clocked at 2 - 2.2 ghz. 16 gb of GDDR 6 18gbs unified RAM 1TB gen 4 SSD Pretty much an upgrade made to push frame rates of existing games to consistent 60-120 fps depending on games

Actually inflation in different countries isn't so bad anymore, with some prices back down to 2019 levels with maybe 5 - 10% added on to that which would be NORMAL inflation. In electronics there are three INCREDIBLY greedy companies and their profit margins show it. Apple, Nvidia, TSMC. Even with Intel now, they've cut back on those higher profit margins which were putting people off, and in the world of CPUs pushed a lot of enthusiasts over to AMD and Amazon sales has reflected that for the last 3 years, which is AMD doing REALLY well for CPU sales vs. Intel. In the world of OEM system builders it's a little different. Intel will have to put out products with REAL gains for Arrow Lake to desktop AND price it well AND the parts not be power hogs and they could get back a chunk of market share they lost. But PC hardware minus GPUs is for the most part reasonable. Yes, there are higher prices for CPUs vs. 2019 prices but they're a LOT better. In the US for general goods inflation has dropped, so that's closer to 2019 + 5 - 10%, for food it depends on what it is. There are food prices close to 2019 levels, but there are foods that are almost 50% higher. Basically grain based foods are more expensive as is buying flour or other ground grains and this is mostly the war in Ukraine. Gasoline prices WERE getting about what they should be, but then Hamas and Iran, along with Iran proxies started attacking different groups along with shipping and now gasoline prices are going higher again.

Bringing PS5 games day one to PC would be dumb financially. Simple math for an $80 game while ignoring taxes - PC - 4 million sales = $224 million - PS5 - 4 million sales = $320 million So basically 4 million would be the equivalent of 2.8 million (30% platform tax) Sony would be segmenting their market and liquidating the console brand. So financially a very dumb decision and basically self sabotaging a PS6 release.

I gotta say that while yea, there's a limit to how much people will pay, that doesn't say much to the fact that the console market has yet to produce a console for enthusiast gamers. I feel like that's an almost completely untapped segment, people who want uncompromising graphics and power on a unit that connects to and fits under their high end loving room TV. I've got a Hisense 65u8k and can say my tv and others high end models can do so much more than most pc monitors can. I've got 4k 144hz or 1080p240hz and freesync premium AND gsync on my TV along with 2k nitts brightness to hit those gorgeous high contrasts. I would gladly spend extra on a ps6 or whatever for this, imagine if they put 100$ or 200$ extra into just the gpu on the ps5 we would've had something like the 6800xt instead of a 6700xt. Compare the tflops between those!

@@seversheen3044 the ps5 pro would need double performance a more, so 4070s or equivalent which is current 3x the power which currently put out twice the performance but this would be way too expensive. Best bet for the jump in performance is an equivalent as good as a 4060 with dlss then your running everything at 60+fps. Jumping to 4K native is a massive drain on the gpu, it’s a huge leap but if using dlss you would upscale to 4K and probably hit 60 on some games. It’s so smooth and you really wouldn’t know it’s not 4K native. Sony should consider NV. But may just be too expensive. Dlss is the future as game complexity is moving quicker than the hardware.

Given how sparse the first party output is going to be for the PS5 for the next year or so, I wonder what Playstation are going to do to entice gamers to buy or upgrade to the Pro? My hope is that we'll see a host of updates for existing games which will make the fidelity modes run at 60 fps, while offering other graphical improvements, such as higher quality upscaling for legacy and BC PS4 titles ( I would love to see something like The Order: 1886 outputting at 4K). For example, TLOU Part One running at 4k/40fps (on 120mhz tv's) would be able to hit 4k/60 and with improved shadows. Or how about Cyberpunk 2077 being enhanced further, bringing it closer to the PC version with improved details in the distance, more npc's/vehicles onscreen at once, less pop in, better image quality etc.

We are just at 4K 30-60 with decent quality at the moment, by 28 I’d guess 4K 60 with ray tracing and ultra would be iffy. Not saying impossible just unlikely I’d expect them to give us 4K 120 promises with 4K 60 and ray tracing being the norm.

You'd lose that bet. According to techpowerup, Phantom Liberty runs at 40FPS average at 1440p with max settings and path tracing on an RTX 4090, with a minimum of 33FPS. Assuming the RTX 6090 will be the top end card in 2028 and that it'll be 3x faster than the 4090 (which is being very optimistic BTW), it still won't be enough to consistently hit 120FPS at 1440p, unless you use DLSS quality. That GPU will also very likely cost 2000 USD at minimum. It'll likely be at least another decade before GPUs in the budget class will be able to do path tracing at 4K/120FPS without resorting to using DLSS and frame generation.

Bro, Sony need to upgrade their psvr2 to wireless, also get more sensible games on it like grand theft, call of duty, need for speed etc. Sony don’t need to be in the back of the line, the apple vision pro is so nice except it’s not really for gaming. There are so many clueless gamers in threads like these lol. The ones saying short sighted things like "there's no point to a PS5 Pro", "who cares about PS6" They apparently know nothing about game development and actually think the PS5 base model is good enough. But the shift from baked lighting to real time GI, which RT unlocks is the most transformative change in game development since the PS1 era first brought us polygonal graphics. The PS5 just barely has ray tracing support and will rely more on software solutions. And then the PS5 Pro will make it so that RT is actually feasible at decent frame rates. But it will still be hybrid RT mixed with raster techniques. PS6 is a big deal b/c thats when path tracing becomes the norm. Thats when developers can focus fully on creating things and no longer wasting their time on the tricks that made raster graphics possible. Now the PS7... that one might actually end up being pointless. Gen 10 may be the last of the traditional console era. Once a cheap cell phone can handle RT, then there won't be many technological hurdles left in real-time graphics. And devs can focus on creating interesting aesthetics as the chase for photorealism will have been conquered

Modern visuals require an immense amount of assets, so speeding artists and level designers up means quicker development time, and 5 years or more has already become the norm. Also dynamic lighting will look much better, baked lighting looks good as long as you don't plan to change too much in the scene

@@xephyrxero In design time bakes don't need to take long time, they can be made draft quality. Also baking doesn't necessarily take take long time today's hardware. Baking also doesn't prevent using dynamic lighting because scene is real life situation only partially dynamic and that can be easily controlled what parts are dynamic. Like indirect light, direct light, what light sources, what objects and so on. Keeping everything dynamic and realtime is a bit problematic as there are easily visible latency or some other visible issues. These are really tools to solve to solve rendering equation in games and that is handled very well. Rendering is not issue in, when looking some improvement to game graphics, GTA VI character animation is doing that.

That's the thing for me. I don't have a gaming pc. But i do have a PlayStation 5 and an XBOX Series X as well as a Nintendo Switch. I think exclusives are needed to sell your console. I mean, what's the point of having a gaming pc and an XBOX Series X? I think that if you have a gaming pc, the best option is to get either a PS5 or Nintendo Switch as there are exclusive titles on there that you won't have on your gaming pc. At least not for a minimum of one year in the case of PlayStation. I know people see exclusives as anti-consumers but that's the way it always has been. These company's need to sell their consoles. SEGA did it with Sonic, Nintendo has many franchises, (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Metroid, etc etc...) The same goes for PlayStation, with Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Gran Turismo, God Of War, Horizon, and again, many many more! Even the XBOX had many exclusives, (Forza MotorSport/Horizon, Gears, Ori, Halo, Killer Instinct,) and more. Until they decided to ported all day and date to pc. Which is nice for gamers. But not so great for selling their console. (At least, if you are a pc gamer.) And there are a lot. And sure, you can make the argument that Microsoft is more interested in GamePass now. Which is absolutely fair, but a different point than what i'm trying to make. Anyway, my English isn't that good so i do hope that my point came across well! I still hope Microsoft keeps on making consoles and competing against Sony because they both need competition!

I mean... I guess it's your money, but I'll be more than happy to wait a year for a game that's releasing on console first. Why should we as consumers run out and buy a console to play a specific game, only to then buy it again on our platform of choice? That's not being a "bad" consumer. I would argue that waiting for a release for your favorite platform is smart. More mone to spend on other things. But maybe that's just being old fashioned or something. Next gen starts around Nov 2027. console generations have typically been 7 year lifecycles and It's probably not going to change for PS6/Next Xbox and 10th gen , although I am one of those people who do wish next-gen would start 2026 (early-mid) , 5 and a half to 6 years Is the sweet spot for me , 7 year cycles feel way too long and waiting till 2028 would be overkill for me , we already do a whole lot more wanting and waiting nowdays for good games to be made so the time feels alot slower than 5th gen or 6th gen eras where more stuff was coming out quicker than you had the time to ever play even half of It or the money to afford It , more consistently stacked months and years back then helped the generational time pass so much more smoothly.

If Sony games came to PC day 1, I would only game on PC and sell my PlayStation. I could then buy Sony first party titles on PC, but all my other games purchases would be through steam. Meaning, 90% of my purchases would be directed away from Sony. Maybe I am an outlier, but I think their current model is much better for them. They can sell their games on two markets without minimizing their platform.

PlayStation has been doing 7 year generations for 20 years, very much doubt they are going to stretch it to 2028. My best guess is it will be in 2027 with a RDNA 5 mid tier based GPU that matches 4090 performance (or close to that), because the top RDNA 4 GPU seems to sit between 7900XT and XTX power and that wouldn't be that big of a jump compared to PS5 Pro that seems to be a 7800XT related GPU.

I think RDNA was designed to line up with the console generations. 1/2 for gen 9, 3/4 for the mid gen refresh, then gen 5/6 for gen 10. So I expect either a hybrid RDNA 5 + 6 chip in the PS6, or just fully 6. Plus the usual Sony customizations of course

What I will say is after AMD saying that next year everything is going to slow down when it comes to console sales. It's going to be curious how Sony is going to be releasing a new console with a new chip when sales are expected to be slowing down. The difference between Sony and microsoft Microsoft can take a hit and lose 100 million Sony loses 100 million and they will really suffer so I'm curious if Microsoft really wanted to just wipe Sony off the face of the planet they could. They can make a console. That's so powerful that nobody would be able to touch him in the console market even though they wouldn't be able to sell it at a ridiculous price and so they would have to take a much bigger lossay instead of losing 100 or $200 per console. Let's say they lose three $400. Let's say by selling 100 million units they lose. I don't know 500 million you know give or take. It doesn't matter because they would dominate like they can afford that. That's the type of company that they can afford that they're trillion dollar company so they would be able to make it back because then everybody would jump on board because they're going to be anybody that would have anything even remotely close to being as powerful. They can literally make a console where it has a 4090 in it. Just an example and sell it at a reduced cost. Sure they're going to lose money on it but they would. They would be able to take that hit. Sony can never afford to do that. If they were to do something like that they would go out of business for sure. Doesn't matter how many console games they sell so Sony's lucky that Microsoft doesn't really want to steam roll over them because they have the funds to do it. Because what do they make a billion a year? If not more, they'll laugh it off. They can afford to drop to lose a billion dollars. Let's say and console sales because you know they're selling. They're such cost is so high, but the amount of people that would buy one would be ridiculous at that point. I think Sony would for sure would really have to look at outside investors with a lot of money or something to be able to compete with Microsoft. But Microsoft doesn't want that. They just they're okay with expanding and broadening the market because they're going to make money. Look on phone. The mobile market alone Candy crush brings in close to a billion dollars a year on its own. They're not trying to steam roll Sony they they want to leave them playing but if they really wanted to they could steam roll Sony and Nintendo come by and if they would literally monopolize the whole entire gaming market and they don't even have to worry about the FTC because all they got to do is you can't stop them from making a console. That's so powerful. Even though they're selling it at a loss at a much higher loss than a ridiculous loss, you can't stop them. That's not illegal. There's nothing wrong with that. They're not breaking any loss but I'm sure they have to see what it'll be all over their asses but they would have nothing to go by. It's not like they're going around buying. You know EA and Ubisoft and all these big massive publishers you know to really, really take over the gaming market. They're just making the most powerful concert that anybody could dare to stand up. Tell the toe with them. Apple would be probably the only one and Google that would have that kind of money that can be able to stand up toe and toe with them and they're not going to do that Apple's not trying to get into the console market. Tried that once and it failed and they're they're not going to try that again. They're going to. They're going to try to basically make their phones and tablets more powerful so people can play the games on PC on those devices instead of making a console. They don't want to get into that market. And Google doesn't either but they could. They're just not going to it. So yeah if Xbox really wanted to they could make the next console. That was so far ahead of anything that the PS6 could even dream about doing that. They would literally have to at that point. Completely more. Go multi-platform to be able to stay alive in the market but they can do that Xbox can do. That is what I'm trying to say. I'm not saying they're going to it's doesn't make any business sense so why would they do that? But if they really wanted to, if Sony pissed them off to the point of no return they could do that. They can afford to take a billion loss and completely steam roll Sony and make a console. That's basically the most powerful gaming PC you could have at the time. And I would let's say something as powerful as like whatever the next 590 would be or 690. Literally talking about Ray tracing 4K120 every single game or 240 and developers would basically have a ball. We're talking about 64 GB of RAM. They could do that. Sure, the concert would probably cost them $1,000 to mass produce or more and they wouldn't be able to sell it from more than 500 bucks. So it would take a huge incredible loss and it would make no sense as a business point. But people forget this is Microsoft. They can do it and completely corner the market so they don't worry about Sony or Nintendo or anything like that because they can literally snap their fingers and completely steamroll anybody if they wanted to

The ps6 should be able to run every UE5 game at 4k60fps but when the next gen UE6 comes out it will most likely struggle to run those games at 4k and the same cycle is gonna repeat and we'll need a ps6 pro, and UE5 games are very heavy it is going to put a strain on most console gpus. who cares just buy a pc that destroys any new console and u get most sony games now and all xbox games . and all u do is upgrade your gpu every 5 -6 years and maybe a full rebuild every ten years
