What you just saw was the result of giving Lerxt a live microphone during that piece. You never know what he's going to say. The Rio version is still my favorite. Of course to truly appreciate the joke in that version, you need to know the album that introduced the world to the genuine beauty of Bossa Nova, Getz/Gilberto. By-Tor was the first epic-length songs that made the label nervous about their decision to sign them that led to the drama that inspired 2112.
@pauljenkin2974 ай бұрын
Every time I saw them live, they cracked me up at some point during the gig. Neil always came across as the 'serious' one but he also had a great sense of humour. Alex must've been a riot to be around. Three very different guys but like pieces of a jigsaw, they fit together perfectly. Incidentally, if you want to hear some Rush which is very different to their other work, try the "Roll The Bones" album. It tends to divide opinion, to some degree, within the Rush community but I love it and I hope you will, too.

Later in Neils career when he was 42 he actually took drum lessons from jazz legend Freddie Grubber and learned how to play with a different stick grip among other formulations

And when Neil smiled, so were Geddy and Alex. By-Tor and a Snowdog has a history, indeed. It was Rush's first multi-part song, being the fourth track on their second album "Fly by Night". The story goes like this: "Rush's road manager Howard Ungerleider came up with the title at a party. There were two dogs at the party, one a German shepherd and the other a tiny white nervous dog. Howard used to call the shepherd By-Tor (aka Biter) because anyone that walked into the house was bitten. The other dog was a snow-dog (white). So from that night on Howard called the pair of dogs 'By-Tor and the Snow Dog.'" On the back cover of the album Alex Lifeson is identified as "Snow Dog", and Geddy Lee is identified as "By-Tor".
