I am going to answer some of your questions. LOL This song is about a number of nightmares that Alex Lifeson the guitarist had especially on the road. It has a number of components to the song and Alex loves to add his improvisation to it. LOL Along with being master musicians they also have a great sense of humour especially Alex Lifeson. Geddy Lee calls him the funniest man he has ever met and they have been best friends since they were 13. Alex had made it his goal to get Neil to smile at every performance. As for the dryers, when Geddy started plugging into the house sound system he didn't need his big stack of amps anymore but Alex still had his. The stage looked unbalanced so they started filling it with dryers, rotisserie chickens, vending machines, popcorn machines etc. Another nod to their sense of humour. They alwsys took their music but not themselves seriously. Song Suggestions Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto Cheers

As great as RUSH is, they don't take themselves too seriously (though they take their music very seriously). They each have nicknames, at times have referred to themselves as the 3 Stooges (cowbell sequence in Neil's drum solo) engaging in monkey business (monkeys in Neil's drum solo video and banana reference in a different La Villa Strangiato live concert and an actual instrumental called The Main Monkey Business), they have washers, rotisseries, dinosaurs, potato heads, gorillas and barbie groupies with them on stage. During concerts, they show hilarious skits of the three of them making fun of their own songs. They are great musicians AND awesome human beings! When you get a chance, check out the album version of this song. The engineering and layering is phenomenal.

The song La Villa Strangiatto, over time has Alex doing various rants, similar in nature to this recording. Listen to a version from the 90's, or from the mid to late 80's!

As noted in other's comments, this song is based on Alex LIfeson's nightmares. So when they get to the part where Alex has the mic, he sounds like he is talking in his sleep. Sometimes (like in the Rio show: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqSXeXqpfs9na6Msi=Ann4XVzmRUjaT3XV ), he does a little rant, tells some jokes, etc. But it is all the sort of crazy stuff that happens in dreams. Note how the beginning of the son is so relaxing: That's the part where he falls asleep. Two of the high energy parts are called Monsters and Monster Reprise, like he is being chased by monsters in a nightmare. There is a story and plot through the song, and in the live version, some silly fun.

Early in the video you spoke of David Gilmore and how he can get a tone to give you goosebumps. I know what you’re talking about and this song does it to me anytime I hear the official video version of this song. I recommend you to check it out. Also, something I haven’t read yet in these comments, when they wrote this song, it was actually too difficult for them to play and caused them a lot of stress. While recording for their album, they were determined to play and record in one full take. In the end , they couldn’t do it and ended up recording three separate parts to create the song. Then it came time to make the official music video. They booked the music hall and were prepared for a long day once again determined to play the song for the first time in its entirety. So they took the stage and on their first try, had nailed the entire song. So if you do watch it, you will be watching the first time they played the song in its entirety.

Your commentary was so funny and uplifting! And as you commented, Rush is "weird", its part of their recipe that makes them so damn unique and I'm just so pleased to have them appear in my lifetime. Somewhere in the '90s I started spending high dollar on getting close seats for their live appearances and its 10 fold the experience than what you see as footage of them playing online or dvd. Yeah, Alex has a varied sense of humor, a really funny dude. 👍😁

Any concert version of this song is amazing, and Alex's rants (when he does them) are hilarious! I love the rant he does in the Rio version, where he makes fun of his nearly-lifelong best friend Geddy: 'I love singing! Singing is easy!' 😅 Also: 'Jazz is weird!' 😂 Alex has a great sense of humor and they love to inject their goofy humor into their shows. That said, they take their music seriously, rehearsing for weeks ahead of time. To that end, I suggest you react to a fun video they did called 'Dinner With Rush.' It shows them eating dinner, including drinking large amounts of wine, and joking around. Its a window into their chemistry and friendship.

Hi Steve! So much to say but I’ll keep it short. Geddy is on Bass and keys as well as vocals. I should know. I bear a striking resemblance. (Vocals not appearing on this song. Sorry Monty python reference there) Alex’s “vocal” shenanigans and music there were totally improvised. Alex is the comedian in the band. They open their shows with a pre recorded video. I’ll post the link. The videos are usually wacky and sometimes funny. For this tour the videos are is done to incorporate all of their album covers. Before I wobble on check out the first 2:33 minutes of this when you have time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnTclKatZrF7mLcsi=WzzCh1nYEFqADdTd

Alex Lifeson's sense of humor. By the way, when they were inducted into the Temple of Rock, during the members' speeches, Alex went last and said “blah, blah, blah” for 3 minutes. with Neil and Geddy in the background who were dubious. Backstage, Neil yelled at Alex for ruining the induction by clowning around. Alex said Neil called him the next day. Lifeson thought he was going to yell at him again, but it was to apologize and congratulate him. Pearl had been receiving text messages all night talking about Lifeson's genius for “blabla” and the mimics that went with it explaining Rush's whole course, mimics that Pearl couldn't see, being behind Lifeson. There are videos of his speech, do a search on his induction into the rock hall of fame, Alex Lifeson....

Anecdote about dryers/washers At one time, Alex Lifeson had a wall of amplifiers on his side of the stage. Geddy, finding it distracted from the visual aspect of the stage, tried to convince Alex that, with technology, it was no longer necessary to have a wall of amplifiers. But Alex insisted on his wall! So, to rock the boat, Geddy installed dryers/washers on his side of the stage! Later, he added roasters with chickens... which he could distribute to the crowd! Another anecdote: in the early years, critics criticized Rush for attracting only guys. So Alex added Barbies to the feet of his pedals! Fans later gave him Barbies... and dinosaurs, finding him lacking in guy toys!

Yep, washing machines. - from reddit: Geddy always used the venue equipment, so he didn't have a huge stack of amps behind him on stage, like Alex had behind him. The guys figured it looked weird and unbalanced with one side stacked with amps and the other side empty. So they put misc big appliances behind Geddy, partly to balance it out, and partly as a joke. During concerts the roadies would come out randomly and change the laundry while the guys were playing. Or if there were giant roasting ovens filled with chickens, they'd take some it and take them backstage.

Wow! Love it. So glad I caught them live a few times. As an avid concert goer, I agree, people are very selfish some times. I've almost come to blows at shows. I've had security address concert trolls who act like they're the only ones at the show and stand/dance through the show (that's probably the safest). However, I did throw a cup of beer at a concert hag, doing her interpretive dance, acting like she was communicating to the band with her asinine flailing. The wife was horrified, but I didn't care. People, if you go to a live show, have fun, but act like an adult and respect those around you. US Roadie 1 signing off...

Comparison are merely based on sounds that I hear. Nothing to do with musical skills etc. I'm not particularly nationalistic so not really bothered who is from where. I like or dislike regardless the country 🤷🏻
