How much money should I pay for a 12wt fly rod and reel

Would you recommend this reel and reel size for some pike fly fishing? Just above ya in Alberta and we have some great rivers with pike in them! Just not sure what reel/size to purchase for it? Thanks!

Hey, thanks for watching! I recommend the 7/8 and reel for pike (on a 7 or 8wt rod of course). If you're looking to fish muskie too, you might want to bump up to the 9/10. But yes, this reel wold be great for pike or muskie fishing.

Howdy partner from Ontario, the pike out here are pushing 40", and we typically throw musky flies for them. I have a 7wt for bass (and larger trout/salmon) and it's been fine standing up against pike but that's when they go for the bass bugs (fun!), you need a stiffer backbone to throw those monster streamers. I'd go for an 8wt rod at least but preferably a 9. The rod you choose will dictate which reel you need. Keep in mind also that any fly rods you have now may have some overlap, ie 6wt and 7wt can do a very similar job. Space out your fly rod weights by 2 (I personally have 3, 5, 7, 9) then when you really get into a niche you can consider filling in the gaps or going lower (like 1wt) or higher (like 11wt). Tight lines!!

@markjuchimenko418 Hey there, neighbour! Thanks for the advice! We don't get pike like that out here unless we go north! So now I'm wondering if a 8wt would be over kill. I'm not much of a lake fisherman but we have some pretty nice rivers with mostly pike!

Cheers brother! Alberta is the dream, would love to move out there once I have enough for a down payment. 8wt is probably perfect as a 30” ish pike rod, but other than that I don’t know what else you could use it for around there. A lot of 8wts are used for steelhead and salmon. If you are happy using smaller streamers then I’d go for a 7 because it does double duty for big trout streamers! Actually, my streamer setup is a 7wt with this reel, mystic reaper X rod and rio streamer tip fly line.
