Never thought of applying a wash with am airbrush! Great idea!

Haven't painted many models yet but what I found out (kinda by accident) is that adding wash with an airbrush does change up things. I have a Walter White bust which is quite big, so plenty skin to do. I airbrushed a skin color, than brushed on a wash and didnt like the strokes being so visible so I airbrushed skincolor on again and noticed the wash was still being visible but added some texture to the skin so that was really nice. Figured I could try and aribrush that wash again to see how it would look and imho it's really good. It's not perfect but it's good enough for me and now I can at least do human skin which was always a bit 'scary' for me xD

I'd say that the two biggest disadvantages of the old Dip aka Polyshades is the very gloss finish and the pain in the rear of cleaning up. I always applied with a brush and I liked the flow of it and felt it was less likely to go wrong compared to a wash, always assuming that you went back to mop up any pools. It also adds a protective layer on your army. Overall I considered it an upgrade over a simple wash but only worth the bother if your are doing a whole army.

Obviously, one can still do a traditional dip. Though cans of dip, like from Army Painter, can be a bit expensive for what you're using it for. It's possible to mix your own dip wash, as demonstrated by Midwinter Minis.

That's why I only used it as an example of what people used to do, but then made my own, since those cans were A) Super Expensive, B) just a trend really from when people got them from hardware stores and Army painter Capitalized on that, the idea is still sound though, a single wash for an overall shade.

If you want to do a more traditional dip on a budget, use Minwax wood stain and thin with a bit of mineral spirits. You can then dip or brush on as you prefer. One of the big benefits of dip is that it creates a very sturdy coating over the entire model- a real plus with metal models that love to chip.

Curious, why would an ink stain more? And compared to what?

How would you go about making your own wash? I read that you can mix paint with glazing medium and water. Or rather start out from an ink and mix with… what?
@PaintmanJourneying

So the way is do washes usually is just a simple pallet wash with some Medium, Thinner and the paint and or ink. But the way you can look at it is in parts. Part One is how thin you want the Wash, if you want it really loose, use a thinner, if really thick use a glaze medium. Then think about finish, Matt medium for something flat, Satin for something with a bit of reflection. Then When it comes time to add pigment, by going with a paint it'll settle mostly where you put it, while with an ink it'll include a bit of staining so that you can change the colour a bit more like a contrast, going with both nets a bit of both. I do get this asked a lot so I think it's about time I do a video about creating my own washes :D

Great video discussing the concepts of why some techniques were used, but I think a similar discussion should done about why Contrast was created and formulated the way it was. The dip you created, was basically what GW did to create contrast paints. They formulated a medium that was a mix of surfactants (airbrush thinners so it runs into the cracks) as well as self-leveling mediums to help it be consistent over flat areas or highlights. You could argue that you don't like the particular viscosity of contrast paints, but I've found that's pretty easy to modify with some additional thinner, water, or medium. It makes them very versatile that way. So great topic, but don't discount using Contrast paints to skip making your own 'dip' or specialized washes, either. Just add water to help them flow better, thinner to really run into cracks, or thicker mediums to help keep them pooling more. They've done most of the hard work for you, might as well take advantage of it. Of course, they're not cheap, so using your method would be a much more cost effective way of getting your own made with some extra work. Seeing this video should tell people how to basically make a custom tuned contrast paint for their style of painting.

Oh I agree totally. One of the things I noticed about some of the new contrast colours GW's put out recently is that they do seem a bit more translucent. Which would make them good for 'The Dip' Method. I only mention Contrasts in this in the video in this way because they really have taken over the 'simple' way of painting when 'dips' were the way before them. But they're all tools in the tool box and can all be used in different and creative ways.

@@PaintmanJourneying, yeah, it's a good callout really. They brand it as the simple way, but it's really been around for ages. They basically just did a little more sciencing on what a 'wash' could be. It doesn't have to only be to get into cracks. If you're careful, you can do so much more. And to be honest, I'd never heard of dipping a model until a few months ago.. but I always worked on aircraft before, which.. well, lets just say you don't want to dip a whole aircraft. Usually. Dipping clear parts to actually make them more clear was a thing, though. Anyway, I love the investigation you did on the 'why' of all this. Many people see a new thing and just do the new thing, rather than trying to understand why we use certain techniques. Once you understand why, it opens the door to use (and abuse) all sorts of things!
