That piper they interviewed has mad satyr energy. Can’t explain it, just his body language!

my only wish is to hear the whole of the Iliad performed and sung in ancient greek. please please do the whole version recorded. I would buy the fuck out of the copy
@Muck-qy2oo Жыл бұрын
It would make more sense as the ancient greek language hada different accent dominating the melodic flow.

extraordinary.

I like the enthusiasm of the piper. Where can I buy a replica of this instrument?

This was amazing. I'm surprised mine is the first comment. This video should get a lot more exposure than it has.

before anyone starts complaining that this doesn't sound like greek, the greek phonology has changed drastically since those times
@ekostopoulos6 жыл бұрын
Of course phonology has changed, however, still I can understand many of the words (with my knowledge of modern Greek)

excellent, commendable work, thank you, and remember besides the more "formal" and staid "serious" music to accompany poetic / dramatic performances, there were other more orgiastic functions as depicted on vases, e.g. symposia, dionyssian rites, that music surely must have sounded a lot jazzier, add crotala, tympani drums, kithara, as for the accuracy of depictions of instruments on vases, on comments made below, the artists were quite true to life then

Doot doot doot doot doot doot doot do do oh demond runners, with beating wings Goddesses of the night! With baneful music, you fance sinister revels With wailing and laments Ye black-coated kindly goddesses who tread the thinning air aloft for bloody kin-murder! demanding due redress, demanding due justice I beg you from my heart, I beg you from my soul! That Agamemnon's son is given leave to overcom his frenzies, these mad attacks driving him wild. WOE THE TOILS so great which, poor man, you've faced and endured. Doot doot doot doot doot doot doot do do What kind of pity, what kind of struggle of blood awaits you now? It rushes upon you, wretch, bringing sorrow, tears upon tears it brings, Some nameless avenging spirit dances in to quench your mother's blood by driving you insane! For you my tears are shed, for you my tears are shed Good fortune does not last for mortals on this earth, like sails on a swift ship that cuts the ocean waves God buffets us about and sinks us in A SEA OF TROUBLES like the ocean's deat-dealing billows that sweep o'er the main!

what i want to know is, attic, koine, or middle greek?
@seanmahoney7044 Жыл бұрын
What is your point of confusion? They are using the original lyrics with their lyres. In other words, Homeric Greek when they are performing Homer, Attic Greek when performing Euripides and Aeschylus

Greeks with a Mediterranean temperament, with a great love for music and dance, would not be able to listen to this music. This music might have been played in theater performances.

I would be suspicious of the accuracy of the reproduction of the kithera just from depictions in art. Artist renderings of contemporary, common instruments are frequently very inaccurate.
@JetBob845 жыл бұрын
He said that was just one way they got information on the kithara. Don't you think it is in ancient writing, too? While I know this is may be "appealing to authority", I don't think that these folks are stupid.
@lambertstarr12185 жыл бұрын
what do you expect? it's not like we can go back in time to listen how ancient greek musical instruments sound like. they work with the information they have, whether that is art or ancient writings
