Compilation Video:
Norman Bates was ripe for another sequel following the release of Psycho in 1960, but it wasn't until 1983 that Richard Franklin delivered Psycho II, a sequel 23 years in the making. So, let's flip on that No Vacancy sign as we check back into the Bates Motel with Psycho II. Psycho III was released three years after the surprise success of Psycho II, with Anthony Perkins making his directorial debut in hopes of achieving another hit. Unfortunately, it bombed, derailing Perkins' plans for further entries and becoming the lowest-grossing theatrical film of the Psycho series. However, it's not nearly as bad as its reputation suggests. In fact, besides being inevitably compared to the legendary original film, Psycho III is an amazing and underrated sequel.

Psycho 2 is a rare case of a unnecessary sequel to a masterpiece that far exceeded expectations and is a worthy follow-up

I was blown away when I first saw it at 16 (prob around 2001) even though I grew up with psycho references in movies and TV I didn't even know the sequels existed.. And then it turned out not only to be good but to be a great companion to the first movie... And then the next two sequels where also at least decent.. I was amazed that the movie I didn't think have sequels turn out to have some of the best in the horror genre

@@mullaoslo by every measure just proposing a sequel should have been laughed at. a well written sequel with the acting to match. Perkins gave you a character that we shouldn’t find sympathy with but made the audience not just feel for but root for st the end. I was skeptical going into 3 but Perkins once again added a dynamic most other actors couldn’t which made 3, while not as good, still enjoyable.

First off, YOU MET ANTHONY PERKINS??? DUDE!!! THAT IS AWESOME!!!! ❤ Now that I got that out of the way, I loved all of the Psycho sequels from 2 to 4. I bought the 3 sequels in a DVD set, and I had a marathon watch. I loved the psychological journey in each of the movies, and Perkins was not only good in each of them as Norman, but he was a great director for Psycho III. You could tell that he deeply understood the duality of the character, how in spite of his psychosis, there was a sense of good in him that was conflicted with all of it. Also, Henry Thomas made a great young Norman in Psycho IV. Seeing Elliot from E.T. in a psychological thriller with Olivia Hussey as his mother was a trip.

I remember there being a trailer that was just a figure with his back to the camera. An old woman's voice said "Norman, is that you?" and he turned around and said "Yes, mother. It's me" It was a chilling, effective trailer that got me so excited to see the movie... but I cannot find it online.

I hadn't caught Psycho 2 or 3 since the theater until I saw some kind of retrospective on some KZbin channel several years back. I gave them another shot and was amazed at how good Psycho 2 was. The direction, Dean Cundy's cinematography, Tony Perkins acting. And part 3 was fun in a cheesy, sort of over the top way. I went out and bought the collection on blu and rewatch them at least every October. (not part 4)

Funny thing in late 1968. Early 69. Lew Weismann who was president of universal studios asked Hitchcock about doing a sequel to his masterpiece. Hitchcock said no. Saying “what would I have Tony, Vera and John do for two hours?” For Hitchcock there was no more story to be told.

I saw Psycho for the first time in the early 80's when it was broadcast on a Saturday afternoon on WPIX (Channel 11, home of the infamous SHOCKTOBER, where are my Shocktober homies at?)- I was only about 6, but my dad did that divorced dad thing where I was allowed to watch movies my mom wouldn't, albeit with his hand over my eyes (didn't work). At the end of every weekend, he would deliver me back to my mom, complaining that I never wanted to take a shower at his house (which really only had a shower)...and my mom would tell him that she didn't know why, because I loved taking baths, and she couldn't keep me out of the bathtub...huh...they just could never figure it out...

All 3 sequels are great for entirely different reasons. I saw all these flicks when I was around 14 (including the remake cuz it was released in theaters that year) and even though they varied in tone, I was fascinated with Norman Bates' history and descent into madness. 4 is an underrated gem, IMO. Olivia Hussey "kills it" as one of the worst mothers in movie history and you actually feel sorry for young Norman and almost understand why he ends up killing her (as well as what he plans to do to his wife in the present day).

It took me a number of years to find out the mystery that it was the sweet old lady Ms. Spoole doing all the murders actually I read the summary on Wikipedia of all places. I think both movies are terrific and I always tend to watch them back to back as part 3 continues where part 2 left off in a way, this brings back memories as my family would go rent movies over the weekend for some unknown reason we picked Psycho 2 despite not having any knowledge that it was a sequel because I was born in 1976 and not having seen or heard what Psycho was.

I've seen Psycho probably too many times to count, but when I saw part two sometime back in the 90's, I wasn't impressed. Then a couple of months back, I gave it another chance, still not as good as the first one, but as far as horror sequels go, it's up there with the best of them. The mystery of what's going on keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Part three and four, I've seen both of them and don't remember them fondly, and barely at all, but I'll certainly be giving them another chance in the very near future.

Part III is better than II in my opinion. III is far similar in tone to the original Bloch novel. It has a sleazy, neon-lit vibe. Almost punk-noir. It's the first time we see Norman's double life from the perspective of a knowing audience, which makes it far darker and scarier. We see that Norman in 80's terms is nothing more than a full blown serial killer and a severely damaged pervert who should never have even been considered for parole. There's no mystique as to what he is and it's extremely disturbing. Perkins direction and handling of iconic imagery is brilliant. The man knew Norman Bates better than anyone. And, c'mon, Duke is a legend.
