Redish Motorsport use this 2011 64k E92 M3 to show an example of how we carry out our comprehensive Conrod Bearing work.
The video includes the Plastigauge clearance measurement checks and data recording, along with engine mounts, also a look at these late-style 702/703 aluminium/tin rod bearings, and then examples of the early-style 088/089 copper/lead rod bearings.

Superb attention to detail. Mines an April 2010 E92 competition pack with 56000 miles on it , with 4 previous owners and judging by the amount of gravel i discovered underneath it's had a trackday or 2 , funnily enough my centre front tray is also missing , it was like that when I bought it from the main dealer ! , I replaced the 2 felt corner pieces myself. I change the oil with castrol 10w 60 and all the oil , air and pollen filters myself every 12 months regardless, which is only 3000 miles for me a bit overkill perhaps , as I do not trust main dealers to do the quality of work you guys do. If I decide to keep the car longer I will bring it to you guys for this doing, fantastic and informative video many thanks.

Slight suggestion, since you've got a few track days and such, but a decent amount of daily driving, consider switching to mobil 1 0w40, since it helps deal with the tight rod bearing tolerances and other quirks of the S65. And so far I've only heard good things about it from people that use it

Really interesting to watch, not least the sheer attention to detail to do this right. One thing though.. and this may be a stupid question buutttt.... presumably there is an upper conrod bearing shell on the top side of the crank too.... should they too not ideally get replaced (though obviously that would require the head(s) to come off) or is it just the bottom bearing shells which are prone to wear? Thanks.

Great video, I am looking at ACL bearings for my N20 bmw engine. I think I have early onset knock which is subtle and appears once warmed up. With the ACL bearings, as they give a slightly larger clearance do you need to run a slightly thicker engine oil? Appreciate the M run 10-60, but mine is 0-30, so was going to run 5-40 which is the thickest recommended by bmw. I would be using plastiguage also. Great to hear your thoughts.

Best Con-Rod bearing shell replacement video I've seen by a mile. I'm doing some pre-purchase research to find out if I can afford these; I've never touched any engine block bearings, could you confirm that the crank big-ends don't need attention (no need to be measured for circularity or cylindrically ground)?

I have a question about the rod bearings issue on the e9x M3. I heard that changing the bearings were considered more of a temporary fix and there's really no permanent fix around the issue. Is this correct?
@RedishMotorsportbmw
@RedishMotorsportbmw 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the questions Thyny, that could be argued as correct - but it depending then how the new owner cares for the engine. In theory these engines are likely to need at least 1 conrod bearing set replacement in their lifetime. Some engines will need 2 or 3 if they are not cared for. You're right in saying that 'just new bearings' isn't technically a cure for it. That's because there isn't really a true guaranteed cure. It's a wearable component and all moving parts have a lifespan of some degree. It's best to class them as a slight consumable and then there will be no surprises.
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 5 жыл бұрын
Can I ask how you chose OEM over ARP, and same for choice of bearings? Were they coated oem’s or a stronger material? In the US my local BMW MM has seen nearly equal numbers of 08-10 as 11-13, granted he’s the only guy who knows what he’s doing so he gets nearly every m3/m5/m6 with seized/spun bearings in the state. He claims taking the %’s into account there’s no change in reliability & has stopped using oem/coated/treated OEM bearings after too many have failed again in cars he warrantied & knows the owner of from the BMW CCA, he acknowledges they’re driven every single day but still foundthe rate of failure high enough to stop warrantying bearing replacements using OEM & did a complete 180 from suggesting only OEM to being very uncomfortable doing the job with oem’s. Maybe the 11+ are improved & aftermarket is just better idk... He also discourages use of the “coated/treated/reinforced oem’s out of concern the clearances are already too tight to be adding ANYTHING to it with a coating. Sound logical or overly paranoid or what’s your thoughts? It’s funny because for the most part he uses standard/OEM/bmw recommended parts only , so idk what to believe
