@xen0bia3 жыл бұрын
When it is put that way, of course it sounds dumb. I don't really agree that there's zero characterization however, I feel we're given enough for this many characters to care for the purpose of a single movie. This ain't a trilogy where you'd be given more time. I almost always find myself agreeing with RLM on movies, but this will forever be the exception. I feel they are overly cynical over this one, more than it really deserves, especially considering the trash that the sequel trilogy would become.
@GumpIncorporated3 жыл бұрын
@@xen0bia the context you're looking at it from seems less reasonable the context RLM is looking at it from though. There might not be zero characterization but there isn't enough to last a movie, A New Hope didn't give everyone a third a of a characterization with the expectation that there'd be a trilogy to flesh them out over. That kind of mindset is how you wind up with a Phantom Menace or a horribly paced netflix original. Even with something where a character death is incidental you want a strong character in mind otherwise you can just skip killing them if you aren't going to have it mean something to the audience. If your entire movie is an attempt at chronicling a doomed bunch of heroes you'd better go operatic and impactful so you aren't just wasting everyone's time. Which is what the movie winds up being. If it had kept the aesthetic and leaned into how sad everyone dying was with some kind of Slow West style pan over the losses at the end it could have been really impactful but as it stands everyone in it might as well have lived and delivered the plans then been shooed off without thanks like an office bagel boy for how much it meant in the greater scheme of things.

I remember when they announced this movie at some con or something and the teaser for it was a voice over of Alex Guinness with his “before the dark times” line as the camera slowly panned over this forested landscape and up into the sky and you saw the outline of the Death Star looming over the planet while a slowed down, sinister version of the Imperial March played. Then the screen cut to black and you heard a bunch of radio transmissions from the “rebels” who were stealing the plans and they all start turning frantic and panicked as they seemingly die one by one, until it’s just a bunch of garbled screams. Then the title came up. It was incredible. Made it almost seem like a horror movie.

I think visually (costumes, props, ship design, even the haircuts etc.) Rogue One perfectly blends in with the OT. The cgi effects look very Star Wars-y, for example, the Star Destroyers have the look of the old models; kinda pale, white, over-exposed a little - which is great because it blends seamlessly with A New Hope. So, visually, it's a perfect Star Wars movie. Even the pacing and choreography of the space battle over Scarif screams Star Wars in and out. Also, what I liked a lot is that the Imperials were at least a bit of a threat. Their officers were not a bunch of inept, whiny whimps like in the god-awful sequels. Granted, taking out stormtroopers with a stick is really lame, but at least during the ground battle on Scarif, the troopes were kinda competent. Especially Vader's Star Destroyer arriving at the end kinda made you feel the menace of the Empire. Still, a faint echo of the Empire we know from the Empire Strikes Back, but it's anough to not be annoyingly incompetent. BUT, the characterss and the plot (apart from K2SO, Krennic and that veteran blue X-Wing commander) are so lame that it's not canon to me. Even though all the fanboys and girls drool over Vader's lightsaber mayhem at the end, I feel it's totally out of character for Vader as we know him from the OT. (Granted, it's clearly in line with prequel Anakin's character, but that one sucked as well, so it's not canon to me, either.) So, summarizing, Rogue One looks and feels like a good Star Wars movie, but the story and characters suck ass.

One thing I did really like is how it explains that the flaw in the death star was intentionally desinged and carefully hidden as to not be discovered.
@lucastradella91973 жыл бұрын
I think the worst part of the movie, is how they turned the Death Star’s exhaust port weakness from a massive oversight to a planned sabotage. Before it was actually kind of poignant, that despite all their hubris and overconfidence, the Empire was able to overlook such a massive design flaw for their super weapon. That they were essentially brought down by their own hand. But now it’s just because Mads Mikkelsen did it, he put it in there intentionally. If Krennic never brought him back then the Death Star would’ve been indestructible. Who needs subtext? Just explain everything in the most literal way possible because some fans complained about it.
@deadpoolguy2833 жыл бұрын
IRK? They gave Lucas heat for "explaining too much" but in the Kennedyverse EVERYTHING is explained. Even where Han's name allegedly came from. I always joke saying "when's the Salicious Crumb movie coming out?" but knowing Kathleen "explain everything!" Kennedy she might already planned a trilogy before Disney took control away from her.
@lucastradella91973 жыл бұрын
Also the Darth Vader hallway scene, while visually amazing, makes the opening of New Hope look farcical in retrospect. Because when Vader boards Leia’s ship in New Hope, she makes a big stink about how they’re on a diplomatic mission and Vader’s boarding was completely unwarranted. But now all I think of is Vader in his mind going, “bitch, I just tried to board this ship like an hour ago. I actually saw you run from the big space battle with the plans. Who are you trying to fool?” It makes Leia in that scene look like an idiot.
@j.m.w.50643 жыл бұрын
It never was a plot hole, the exhaust port is a narrative device: In every classical adventure the dark fortress or besieged town has a secret passage. No matter if we look and read up the really old stuff or the later Hollywood films picking up the old themes: Arabian Nights, Conan, LOTR Helm's deep, Indiana Jones etc etc etc there is ALWAYS somebody exploiting a "secret" passage. And even in SW the trench is well guarded, was kept secret and cod only be penetrated because Luke was aided by the force. There is no reason at all to call this a plot holenand to turn this into being apologetic about Rougue One. There is indeed one plothole in SW (or so it seems to me) and that's: The rebels use these fancy torpedoes that can move in right angles and we never see those again... would have come in handy later on, no? Cheers

Raddus wanted to fight. As soon as he heard Jyn and Co. were there at Scarif he went to help. Once Mon Mothma heard Raddus went she said fuck it, let's fight, rather than leave Raddus out there to get obliterated. 3. Jyn and Cassian didn't leave the planet because they didn't think gate was open. They weren't even sure the transmission got through. If I recall Brody was the go between and he got killed.

Chirrut was particularly fascinating, but most of the main characters had distinct personalities goals, and even conflicts among themselves. @Swen They tried to combine a typical heist plot with a character study; since a movie simply doesn't have the capacity to deal with both things at the same time , they failed.
