Thank you so much for the detailed explanation of all the pieces in play here! I've been trying to have a little more structure in my jams, and I'd like to start using Ableton as a main brain for them. It's pretty rare to see people talk about using DAWs for this kind of thing because so much focus is on grooveboxes, hardware sequencers, and live loopers, but as someone who doesn't have much hardware it's great to see more discussion of integrating plugins. And I love the discussion of macro mapping; I just picked up a Launchkey 49 and have been trying to figure out how to best use its faders/encoders in a jam setting. To your point about faders and buttons on your controller, I feel like Novation will wind up making a new Launchpad with faders/encoders at some point, seems like a pretty natural product and a good way to compete with the Push - focus more on hardware control since they won't be able to compete on software.
@LivingLotusMusic13 күн бұрын
You're right, I think a lot of people disregard how much utility Ableton can add as the "main brain" of this type of live improv setup. It's definitely tempting to want to go "DAWLESS with a capital D" for those tactile no-screen vibes, but especially when paired with the Push (and a well organized set of "collections") I'm never really menu diving or even looking at my laptop screen. Add a multi-channel audio interface and Ableton can act as mixer, FX rack and sequencer all in one, while still allowing you to use whatever external hardware you want. All of the above can be automated too, so you can record and loop parameter changes on any of your FX. If you have a DC coupled audio interface you can even use some of the channels to automate and send control voltages for analog gear (using Ableton CV Tools). I also use the MIDI routing, MIDI filters and MIDI FX a TON, including some generative max for live devices such as [stepic], to allow me to improv fairly complex chord patterns across multiple external devices live. The only downside is the more you lean on Ableton in your setup the more powerful your computer has to be, especially for live improv where you can't freeze tracks and latency has to be relatively low. My M1 Max seems to handle everything I throw at it hovering around 20% CPU, but I bet I could bog it down easily if I wasn't efficient with my audio effects.
@midiscripts10 күн бұрын
In Live 12 they released new device called Variations which allows an ability to tweak parameters (buildup) and then reset to previous state in one click. It is somewhat similar to Elektron workflow (Ctrl - no shortcut). Great for performance!

Regarding DAW controllers with faders, I've been very pleased with my APC64. It can run with Ableton/DAW of choice, or operate standalone, which has been nice. 8x faders (Touchstrip, not "real" faders, but I've grown to enjoy them quite a bit), 2x MIDI outs, and 8x remappable CV/Gate outs, so it plays nice with my current modular rig. Loved the set + walkthrough as always!

I have a couple of Ponchos but they look too "new" even though they're from Mexico they aren't the old style antique classic designs like yours which looks to be from either Peru or Argentina, South American in its design or you've got an actual Antique from Mexico dating back to the late 1960's! Excellent sounds ❤ Love what you're expressing ~🎉
