The RYTM is such a beast - Love seeing how you use it, and your emphasis that what you are showing here isn't ALL it can do, but it's what YOU do. I often have to remind myself that I don't have to use ALL of the capabilities of these machines, and nothing used to derail me more than "Oh it can still do X and I"m not doing it, I should use that" And god yes, does this thing (and every electron box) need an SD card or CF or something for samples. Because of the space limitations and the management, I've mostly use samples for transients, kind of like how the DSI Tempest can work, and leave the real samples to something else.... If you think of it that way, as a pure "drum machine" as opposed to sampler, it makes more sense -- but that's now how it's positioned, and they are like 90% of the way to a truly great sampler, and that missing 10% is a very apparent 10%. The storage (and stereo) limitation is real, and a bit frustrating for where this is positioned.

You can get around some of the sample limitations on the RYTM by creating concatenated samples and parameter lock the start / end playheads to trigger different different samples and add variation. Not unlike the OP-1 if you're familiar with that device ;) I get how people could be luke-warm about the design decisions regarding what features make it to each box, but if you have the budget to put a few of them together the limitations produce some really interesting results. The limitations on the sample bank if you lean into it will force you to be really deliberate about the way your projects are organized, and for me it caused me to rethink how I manage samples in my computer.

I love that you're showing off what the Rytm can do. Do not think this Elektron box gets nearly the love it deserves. I keep thinking I should sell my Takt & Tone and pick up this, cause I really need a drum-focused machine I can also make grooves with (and those other boxes just don't fit in my setup the way I thought they would). It's also wild that both the Rytm and Syntakt exist in the same timeline. I kind of feel like if the Rytm and Syntakt merged (and had expandable memory or accepted sd flash, as you mention) it'd be an unrivaled box. Great video, Jeremy!

Good video Jeremy! We use this a pretty opposite way as I am way more sample based on it, but one thing that is awesome for the analog drum engines is that you can P-lock each synth engine to a single step on 1 single track. So for example, if you are on BD track 1, you can trigger all the buttons and then when you hold down each one when you go to the synth area you will find that you can now pick any engine you want - hats, kicks, snares - you are not limited to the BD and a few others anymore...It's pretty wild and mind- blowing since you can get that Aphex type of choked sound from the engines constantly switching plus you have just freed up a ton of tracks for other things as well. So yeah, I think this is right up your alley with the styles of music you like to make. Would love to see you try this!
@ChurBoBaggins2 жыл бұрын
for real? i'm not around my rytm at the moment so can't try this.... but you are saying you can pick any sound engine by p-locking (rather than being restricted to the few that Elektron lets you pick from when assigning one to the track?) is this just for the bottom four or for all? would be epic to have more dual VCOs up top
@onesmallthought2 жыл бұрын
@@ChurBoBaggins No, you're still restricted to the sound engines that are available on each track.

@@ChurBoBaggins Good question, I always do it on the bottom 4. But try it!
@landonh35352 жыл бұрын
@@ChurBoBaggins The one detail I forgot was that you need to add the sounds you want to the sound pool, which takes 1 second. So you do that first and then Plock the sounds from the sound pool list. So yeah, you could have a track with kick/snare/shaker all on one pad. The thing is that it sounds really cool - super tight and choppy since the engines are cutting each other off every note.

I love my Rytm. The performance and scenes are so cool. With performance I’m always in 2 minds. Most packs you can buy will use performances and scenes to affect the track under the pad, so the performance in pad 1 will affect the bass drum, but I also like performances that act like a kind of more focussed control all, and I haven’t come up with a system I can use to make this consistent from pattern to pattern, project to project. If I could change things I’d definitely introduce pattern level mutes, outside of song mode. This is the one thing that has totally held me back and meant that I’ve never performed with the Rytm without having the Digitakt alongside it.

TY for the reminder about what the impulse engine is useful for! My latest upload uses the exact technique you describe at 11:00, where I'm using a pad to trigger a signal going out the rear external outputs into this new eurorack fx unit I built, and then back into the Rytm's External In. I had to turn off the synth engine on that pad entirely in order for it to only play the sample, but I think I could have achieved the same effect by merely changing the engine to Impulse. Thx Jeremy! -Barry

I've had mine for a year and I've still barely explored what it can do. I was looking for an analog drum machine with big expressive pads and this was pretty much it. At times it has frustrated me very much due to technical issues (glitchy pads, frequent hangs), but now that I've worked out the kinks (latest firmware did me wonders), I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I use it for a lot more than drums. I've given up trying to get a good analog cymbal crash out of it however, I think I might just have to use a sample.

t’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content. I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak. I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds. When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap. I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power. In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with. What would be your suggestion? Thank you!

Do you have any information on them releasing a new rytm mk3? I have the original kind of stopped using it when I couldn’t load up my own samples. The version you have in this video I’m pretty sure you can load up your own samples finally …. but I’ve been waiting on the third version because while I like these two I feel like they need to step it up on the screen and get with the times and do what MPC is doing. It doesn’t have to be full on what MPC is doing but at least put a bigger LCD screen (possibly touch screen) to make the editing parameters a lot easier functionally and I feel they could squeeze in a lot more functionality through a different GUI interface system. Not trying to tell them how to run their business lol 😆 but if they could make one of these with a bigger screen I would also like bigger drum pads I can’t remember if they do the same after touch as the asm hydrasynth but add that tech if possible. I always love the simplicity of the sequencer on their devices so that’s one plus but again the song mode on these is trash another thing they need to adjust. My last complaint would be unusable sounds they come preloaded. I know this thing is an editing dream and I do that with other devices they have. However a lot of the sounds that come factory loaded are trash (literally unusable). They need to step it up in that department for a device that’s like 1200-1400 new. I still love the analog 4. Just want them to make the next leap maybe it’s just wishful thinking but I hope they’re coming out with a new one

This is my one of my primary machines that I use along with the A4. The Mk2 is for my home studio setup and mk1 is what I take for live. That being said, you need to do a little bit of research as your claims are incorrect. Mk1 has been able to load its own samples for years now. The mk1 can not sample into the machine as the mk2 can but loading preprepared samples is no issue at all. And while I have an very much enjoy the new MPC line Elektron needs to be Elektron and not even worry about AKAI or try and be anything like them. That’s nonsense.
