I have the rules to Adv Heroquest now… and I am frankly blown away! Why would you need any other board game, or at least dungeon crawler? It has bloody everything. Every aspect, to completely immerse oneself in this world. I mean, the amount of stuff in this game, is slightly intimidating to be honest. To play this game in its full breadth, would require some considerable investment in learning all the rules, and the minutia of the game. I mean, you even have to maintain your firearm weapons, tuning them in between missions, etc! It is dizzying for a noob like me. But it certainly seems like a complete experience !! This is the template right here.

There's a fan made variant of Advanced Heroquest called Advanced Heroquest Reforged. It adds more control and variety when creating heroes and also adds more depth to the overall gameplay. If you enjoy the base game you'd probably also enjoy the fan made content too

@David-mx1os Жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Fair enough, the standard rules are good anyway. One of the things that I like from reforged is the changes to hero creation - more options and no pot luck from dice rolling. I think starting stats are too important to leave it down to chance. I also like how it starts your heroes off with bunch of skills from the outset.

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
It can be very brutal. Sleepy was at a disadvantage from the start with some poor stats and a wizard's apprentice rather than some more muscle in support. We also rolled quite high on the monster tables, which meant we had quite a few tough fights, and unfortunately I did forget to use my fate point to save the Sarge's leg. Things might have been a bit different if he was at full mobility with his original toughness of 10. Thanks for the kind words. I made two dice trays with salvaged bits of the box from my beat up second copy of Advanced Heroquest. The box was beyond saving, but I couldn't bring myself to throw it away.

I don't mind the length of the corridors; I think that works well with pursuit rules. However, they made a mistake putting all the "nothing" results in the centre of the table as those numbers are going to crop up more frequently. @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
The wizard's apprentice isn't a great companion for a one-shot like this. Normally only a real wizard can take an apprentice, but they basically get them for free because the apprentice just wants to learn new spells. You effectively get a second wizard on your team for free, albeit a much less powerful one. A real wizard has more wounds, more fate points, and starts the game with four spells, including some powerful attack spells. Later on wizards can even bring dead characters back to life if they know the right spells.

This was a very entertaining adventure despite the tragic conclusion. I'm left wondering if this really is better than regular Heroquest because at times it seems much the same except you have to roll ten times as many dice and refer to lots of tables. It's probably a better system for a solo player since you don't need a Dungeon master. Maybe a hybrid version of the two could be made.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Advanced Heroquest addresses a lot of the things that people in HeroQuest sometimes mention (roll and move, not enough strategy in combat, modular boards, more events, and so on). It's a much more sophisticated system, and steers much more towards RPG element, including a stronger campaign system, with really interesting mechanisms for going to town, training, hiring henchmen, and keeping your money safe. But ultimately the two games are very different, they sit at 5 and 4 in my top ten list of games. Also Advanced Heroquest already includes rules for playing all of HeroQuest's core missions with Advanced rules, plus rules for using furniture, monsters, heroes, and even the board, in Advanced Heroquest, so it already sort of blends the two systems.
@ElTsunamiDiablo Жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I used to have it when I was a kid but I had no patience for learning rules back then so strangely I took the path of even greater effort and made my own rules. The combat seems a bit better. I always thought original Heroquest was weighted too much in favour of heroes and it seemed like monsters rarely managed to defend anything. Combat in advanced reminds me of how Warhammer Fantasy was back then so I guess they kinda borrowed their own stuff. I've found a pdf of the rulebook so I will probably use some of the ideas and tables for my own homebrews. I hope you'll do some more playthroughhs of both versions of heroquest as they have been great to watch.
