Have all three Resident Evil boardgames and ALL expansions that I still need to paint. Thats a daunting task because the there are a lot and I mean a lot of mini's between all boxes. The funny thi g is that they fixed the dark tiles for the RE3, but they messed it up again for RE1. A real shame. Still waiting for someone on Etsy te create some neoprene tiles. No luck so far.

On the one hand, I'm glad that the First Light campaign actually has an ongoing plot; the one from the core game box feels like just a series of random adventuring tasks that the King or Prince has the Heroes perform before suddenly turning into a race to find the Star of the West so the King can raise an army to fight Zargon, and then the Spirit Blade needed to "defeat" the Witch Lord so that the King has a chance at winning the upcoming battle. But on the other hand, having the events of First Light happen "at the same time" as those of the core box is really strange. Sir Ragnar having previously been captured by Ulag, who the Heroes in the core box fight after having saved him from said imprisonment. The Talisman of Lore sort of being in two places at once (though even that gets a special "give the players the Talisman of Lore if they don't already have it" line during The Prophecy of Telor). And then First Light ending with talk of mostly unrelated events that happened in the core box campaign but still suggesting that Kellar's Keep is meant to come next? I understand the idea behind deciding to make a smaller, cheaper, and thus more accessible version of the core box for people who don't want to spend so much money on the core box, but not making First Light a "these are the adventures of Rogar, Ladril, Durgin, and Telor" really feels like a missed opportunity. The rest of the story, about the Witch Queen Kessandria and Qwindrak, and even hints that Sir Ragnar is losing faith in Mentor and the Realm, could have easily been part of a true prequel campaign. I feel like the best bet for my own purposes would be to try and blend the First Light and core box campaigns into a single adventure. Doing so might help with getting rid of some of the "we'll get him next time" of defeating Qwindrak over and over, while also having the Heroes actually interact with the King, save Sir Ragnar themselves, and enter into the story that gets continued in Kellar's Keep.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring17 сағат бұрын
I actually feel very different to you about the original core set quest line. I talk about it at length in my video, but I think there is much more to it than a series of unrelated quests. I think it's fantastically constructed. But yes, I really expected First Light to be a prequel about Rogar and the gang - especially with a name like First Light! And seeding the quests with hints of Sir Ragnar's upcoming betrayal and then leaving it hanging also feels like a lot of wasted potential. I mentioned elsewhere in the comments I think First Light would sit well in the core game quest line, after waking the The Witch Lord, as his return stirs his other allies into action. And while the heroes are dealing with that threat, The Witch Lord has time to amass his strength for their final showdown.

One of the most tense/scary games I have played was one game of Space Crusade with my dad when I was kid. I had completed the mission and had to get back to the boarding pod. Only my Sergeant left alive. Nothing left on the board. Until that Genestealer appeared. Turn after turn it swooped in and inflicted a wound and my Sergeant just. Couldn't. Land. a. killing. Blow. In the end he died one turn away from the exit space. And the Blood Angels lost the game. Edit: It's over 30 years ago but I still remember that game.

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringКүн бұрын
It's a subject I flip-flopped on including as I was concerned the video was already over 20 minutes long and was getting quite technical. There was a brief line about the bosses being driven by their own deck of behaviour cards, but it looks like it hit the cutting room floor! I am thinking about doing a video on how different games handle boss fights, though, and Resident Evil 3 is probably going to be one of the showcases for that. In the meantime I am happy to answer any questions in the comments here.

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringКүн бұрын
To be fair, while their core lines still use regular D6, some GW games have started using custom dice. Underworlds, Cursed City, and Blackstone Fortress are all examples. I do tend to have a fondness for dice with pips (I didn't like when the Warhammer Quest series changed from regular dice to custom dice), but I think it depends on the game. The combat system in Dungeon Saga uses regular dice and it's excellent, while Dark Souls and Resident Evil (both from Steamforged Games funnily enough) make really good use of custom dice. The charts in Resident Evil that dictate what the symbols on the dice mean depending on the weapon you are using is a really nifty idea.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thanks and yes, the main titles are quite good and are well balanced. RE1, RE2, RE: code Veronica, RE4 and the remakes/remasters of these are excellent as well as the originals from PS1 era. From RE4 onward the series is action heavy, yet returns to suspense and macabre for RE7 (albeit a different storyline). As for most enjoyed, RE2 is my favorite also (original or remake, both are with merit individually) yet RE1 remake from GameCube era is beautiful. RE4 is much more fun than it deserves to be as well lol.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I have the RE2 board game with a number of the Kickstarter bonuses. It was the first entry in the board game series, so it has all of the flaws you covered here, but also the weapon & evasion mechanics which I agree make the game quite fun. What it does not include at all is the campaign feature. For a better designed & fully realized campaign, you would probably want to get the newest installment which is based on the awesome remake version of the original Resident Evil. Thinking about picking that one up myself someday. What I particularly like about the RE2 game is some of the expansion material, including the 4th Survivor and the giant alligator.
@TortleTalkКүн бұрын
Um, it does have a campaign feature... it has 2 full campaigns if you have all the expansions. You just don't keep items other than certain ones, weapons and S items. Some flaws with RE2- 1. There's a lot of content in the expansions so without them the experience is very cut down. Some of these expansions are out of print/expensive. 2. If you have an older copy of the game, the tiles are ridiculously dark where its actually hard to play the game. This was fixed in later versions or if you already have re3, you can use those tiles instead. 3. The gameplay was refined in 3 and 1, so 2 is a little chunkier and more difficult. It also has the longest set up time of any game I own (seriously, it's the worst thing about it). As a choice between them, I think 1 is better, but if you love 3 and the videogame of 2, you will enjoy 2 also.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringКүн бұрын
Because Resident Evil 2 is my favourite video game in the series that was the one I was drawn to the most, but having looked at all three board games in the past I felt that I should go for one of the later entries where they had a chance to hone the system. 3 was my first choice over 1, simply because I played the video game a lot more, and I had more of a connection to it. When I was offered a review copy, it made the decision easier!

Yeah, doors and barricades could really have done with some emphasis. The map tiles remind me a lot of those from Descent: Journeys in the Dark. But those are, shall we say, geographically coherent. They're outside or a messy indoor dungeon. Sounds like an interesting game so far!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringКүн бұрын
You can make fairly coherent maps in RE3 if you take the time to squint at the tiles and look at the front and back of each one, but it's such a long-winded process for no real gain. It really doesn't matter what the tiles show, because all that matters is each tile's shape. Fortunately, once you are playing you don't really have much time to think about the window dressing!

So we were doing the 3rd trial fighting the fates, we realized we had an extra talisman. The question was could we bury it at another place of power and take the level up? We saw nothing in the rules that said we couldn't so we agreed to do so, but then we ran into another question. Could we fight the fates at any of the 3 places talismans were buried or just the first 2 places?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring2 күн бұрын
As soon as you bury the second Talisman the portal is unsealed, the card is flipped, and instructions on the "sealed" side are no longer applicable. As the card is flipped, and the instructions were to bury "two talismans" not "at least two" I would have to rule you cannot bury more than two talismans and you don't get any additional power ups for doing so.

I just played my first game of Heroquest, choosing the monk, and he was kind of broken. We had 6 players, with an increased difficulty applied by Zargon, and tore through our final boss in the first quest pretty much by himself. Smack two enemies adjustment, hit with additional dice, dodge damage when attached, then fire beam for the win. Two characters died while I ended up taking no damage this round.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring2 күн бұрын
The game really isn't designed for six players, so it may be you haven't got the balancing quite right yet to compensate for that. If you find the monk is consistently stealing the show you may want to look at my review of the monk where I suggest some possible rules changes like making him spend an action when there are no monsters present to "meditate" to regain his abilities. I'm not a fan of homebrew in general, but you may decide he needs a little nerf to work within the structure of your campaign.

As much as I love buying more HeroQuest content, First Light just doesn't grab me like any of the normal expansions did. There's not a lot that comes in the box that I don't already have better versions of from the Avalon Hill release of the base game. Granted, First Light is designed to be an alternative to the base game rather than a full expansion. The new board design, while different, is not to my taste. Almost all of the rooms are completely separate from each other, and the artwork for the walls extends too far into the spaces that make up the interior of those rooms. The hearing that they decided to make the quest book (which would normally be the most enticing thing to me) not be a prequel but instead happening alongside the base game's campaign, but somehow uses all of the same artifacts, seems like an odd choice. Something like a Ring of Fortitude seems more generic, but Orc's Bane or the Spirit Blade are presumably meant to be uniquely named things.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 күн бұрын
It's worth noting, many of the artifact cards are included not for use in First Light, but for when they might be needed in other quest lines. For example, the Spirit Blade doesn't appear in First Light, but it's included so you could play the core game campaign or Return of the Witch Lord without having to buy the original core set. You will find a deep dive into the new quest on my channel if you want to know more (and don't mind spoilers).

Can someone please tell me why we always keep playing on the same outdated, boring, and uninspired board?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring3 күн бұрын
Well, I don't personally think the original board is boring and uninspired. It's iconic - part of the brand identity - and through overlays it's possible to make it different. Regardless, First Light has just come out with an official brand new board design, and there are plenty of people making custom boards, some of which I have featured on the channel.

Great video introducing new players to HeroQuest 🙂 As a forever GM I would like to defend the app as it allows me to play as a character for once without having to take on the Zargon role. There are some toggles to adjust difficulty for the AI and the dungeon ambient sounds and the Zargon voice-over outbursts throughout the quests are delightful!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringКүн бұрын
I've done quite a lot of coverage of the app on the channel, and talked about the various options and new functions they keep adding. The AI is still incredibly rough though - it isn't smart enough to provide a solid challenge. And while I am on record as saying I think it's a good thing they added it, and I do appreciate being able to use it if I need to do a solo run on the channel, I can't recommend people get the game if they are hoping the app is going to provide them an awesome experience and that is the main way they intend to play. I just don't think it's good enough for that, and for me HeroQuest will always be preferable as a group experience with a real Zargon player who can adapt the dungeon on the fly, as that is where the game's strengths lie.
@suokkis4 күн бұрын
I think the next character they could add should be a cleric or a priest, who specializes in healing, buffing and dealing with the undead enemies. Give them 6 holy spells they can use, like the wizard, with some regenerating ones.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 күн бұрын
Cleric would be good, and not having anything that deals with undead feels like a "gap" in the roster at the moment. I would also like a thief - something sitting between the explorer and the rogue.
