I did this but used a Phillips screwdriver on a drill, and wrapped the handle end with Scotch Brite pad.

Brilliant! I had a small bore that my hone would not fit. Did you not use oil or WD40?

3M cubitron sandpaper might be the best for this application. According to the project farm KZbin channel video review and testing of sandpapers, the cubitron held up best in metal sanding. This would mean that it also lost the least amount of grit in the process of contact with the metal, which would mean that it should have the least amount of grit residue left in the surface of the cylinder. I have heard that you need to get the grit residue out of the surface of the cylinder or else it stays there and choose a way at your piston rings forever,
