Yeah I'm used to Isaac Payton Sweat's version, from LOOOONG before this one. Little podunk Texas town, the DJ would mix in some rock/pop/dance with the country and different people would dance to whichever they liked, but when this came on, yup everybody was arm in arm.

You gotta understand when this came out Techno was big in Europe and the Line Dancing Craze was big also ( Yeah, Thanks Billy Ray) and there were also a lot of European dance groups having One Hit Wonders..... this was one of them and mixed the genres.

The origins of this song are unknown, but it was known before the Civil War 1861-1865. It's still played in dance halls and clubs in the South. And EVERYONE know how to dance to it. We just use a different version than this one. lol

Hey there, greetings from Germany. In Europe it´s a common thing for bands to be "special", which doesn´t neccessarily mean bad. There a fun-songs, like "Barbie-Girl" from Aqua or no so funny but special like the familiy-band "The Kelly Familiy" with songs like "An Angel" from 1994, written by a 12 years old kid. They where tremendously succesfull all over the world. It happened mostly in the 90ies but is still going on.

Today there was an article on a Swedish newspaper site about the man who wrote Cotton Eye Joe, in the article he says he just wanted to write one hit song to live on. And he succeeded a couple of years after he had made 50 Million Swedish kronor and today after 20 years still receive a check on 500 000 kronor each year. He is laughing all the way to the bank.
