I used to be a big wipeout fan until I sold my PS3 a while ago, and I miss the game. I have the demo of redout on my pc using a ps3 controller and xbox 360 software. On the demo, it seems I cannot map my short shoulder L/R 1 buttons for strafing, and that's what I used to use for the air breaks on wipeout. So does the game allow you to re-map strafing to the 1 shoulder buttons? Thanks
@MajoradeMayhem7 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how I play Redout. I use Classic scheme within the game, and additionally Steam's remapping feature to switch the strafing from the triggers to the shoulder buttons. Note that this will only work if you're using a controller compatible with Steam's rebinding feature. An Xbox 360 pad should work, don't know about a PS3.

I want to add a small comment to any newcomers: Watch out with using mS (Magnetic Stabilizer, which gives your ship extra grip). What I mean by this is - it's very easy to fall into a trap where you get used to a ship's grip and handling with mS, then having a boatload of trouble in the races where you can't use it, like pure races/time attacks (pure gamemodes do not allow the use of powerups). It is fairly difficult to get out of the habit of doing this - I would know, as I have had it happen to myself. In the end it will also prove slower than using Augmented Propeller, the mainly used passive powerup. Although inconventional, if you feel like you're having an issue keeping your ship from exploding, either the Repair Drone active, or Hardened Hull passive might help you out without compromising your ability to learn how to corner, and these will be a lot easier to put aside than Magnetic Stabilizer as they don't drastically change the way your ship handles.

There isn't a lot I have to say about the teams. The fastest builds for Time Trialling are: Turbo Boost with Sulha AP, or Turbo Boost with Asera AP or OET. Sulha dominates Pure. If you're struggling with hull or handling in the Career, go with ESA AP. It is perfectly adequate 90% of the time. But by far the most important factor, is to know the tracks like the back of your hand.

@MajoradeMayhem7 жыл бұрын
Happy to help! 90% of the time, you want to be doing the conventional tight turn, which is strafing along with steering, in the same direction as the turn (e.g. steer right + strafe right). If you've been looking at my demonstration laps, I point out unusual corners where drifting, pitching or hairpin-turning is better (make sure you've got annotations turned on). Don't think you're "doing it wrong" if you're bouncing off walls. Wall-bouncing is simply part of Redout life! If you've picked a "drifty" ship like the Sulha or the Conqueror, be aware their handling is a bit different. I'd advise sticking to the Lunare or the ESA for now. I don't like doing narrated videos with my squeaky voice, but I may consider doing an improved version of this one...
@FLASHMOD37 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response! Guess Ill just have to put a bit more time into practice. Id really enjoy a narrated more fleshed out video about strafing! It seems like one of the most crucial skills to learn, but the in game tutorial doesn't do a very good job at explaining its importance imo. The only reason I realized I was doing something very wrong was getting my ass kicked by bots in the quick races.

Awesome, thankyou! Just got the game and this helped a lot. You say you don't really brake except in an emergency, so do you generally go full throttle and use the strafe or do you still find yourself feathering the throttle regularly?
@MajoradeMayhem4 жыл бұрын
Hiya! Generally you go full throttle. This is why we say wallbouncing is a thing. The latest build of Redout has much more punishing walls, which means that braking has become a lot more common. We still don't let up the throttle though. One reason for that is energy recharge - releasing the throttle means no energy regen.

I don't understand how you are strafing so sharply - I hold the strafe trigger down (PS4 Arcade style) and the ship hardly moves. I am used to Wipeout airbrakes, so this strafe system confuses me. What upgrades are you using at the 4 minute mark in the video? I really want to like this game, but until I get a handle on the controls it is a quick trade in for me.
@MajoradeMayhem2 жыл бұрын
The punch you get out of your strafe does depend on your ship type, its upgrades, and the powerups you have selected. Also, to get the perfect turn, your timing and technique have to be spot on. If you are using analogue triggers for your strafe, I find this to be a hindrance. Since it's a rare occasion when you don't want anything other than All The Strafe, I rebind to digital buttons (I have problems with my hands that make this pretty much a necessity). At the 4 min mark I am using a perfectly normal strafe turn with no assistive powerups for strafe. What I do use on a few occasions in the video is brake, to make my craft do a 180 turn. Braking is not preferred but it is necessary to do a 180 or any "pirouette" or on-the-spot turn.

@MajoradeMayhem6 жыл бұрын
To get a proper drift, you need to use your strafe anyway... Drifting is essentially always slower. Regardless, I do advise learning how to do it, because handling your craft with confidence is key. Also, to get the tightest possible turns, you start with a little bit of drift.

How does this game compare to F-zero do you think?
@MajoradeMayhem6 жыл бұрын
I come from F-Zero GX, and comparing the two is pretty pointless. The handling is a world apart. The ships in Redout handle more like hovercraft (technically, drones) and just don't have the agility of F-Zero ships. If you've ever played the Star Wars podracer game, Redout is much nearer to that. Redout certainly demands that you hunker down and learn its own ways. Firstly that means not being afraid of the walls so much. It can also be a little overwhelming to steer, pitch and strafe. F-Zero players have a slight advantage in already having a moderate feel for strafe and pitch.
@mintmag87486 жыл бұрын
@@MajoradeMayhem Thanks but by compression I meant differences rather then which is better. Perhaps a video going into more detail has to how the games are played and what to expect when going from one to the other. Because coming from F-zero to this was quite an adjustment.

hi how about breaks. do you use them?
@MajoradeMayhem7 жыл бұрын
No. In Redout it is faster to gracefully bounce off the walls. Brakes are strictly for hull emergencies when you cannot afford the damage of a wall bounce. Health management is part of the game. On that topic, remember what I said about regen. Not interrupting your health regen is absolutely critical on some tracks, like Khamsin and Revolving, where you have basically one spot and one spot only that gives you time to regen. Accidentally bonking a wall and interrupting it can be disastrous to your race!

Thanks for the instructions! Sadly the game fails to go over such things. Considering that the buttons aren't rebindable and none of the setups work well for me, I'm gonna let this game go after 11 hours of play. I'm gonna try BallisticNG instead, maybe that's more up my alley. A more detailed review: Overall meh game. Has nothing to do with F-Zero and is inferior to it. Convoluted and imprecise controls and handling. Good luck mastering that and have fun bouncing from fall to wall. Most of the items you can equip are garbage. Class 1 races is where the game does okay, but as you get higher, it crumbles under its own ambitions and shortcomings. The AI feels super artificial and cheaty. No matter how fast you feel like you're going, unless you're significantly ahead it can zip past you at any time. And a single mistake, even if you're way ahead can cost you the whole race. The jumps are ridiculous. This is the first racing game I've ever seen where boosting before a jump is a BAD idea. Overshooting, crashing into "safety nets" and into other objects is common. Not needing a boost applies to most jumps but not all, so it's a trial and error nightmare. The shitty air control doesn't help. The level design constantly makes you take blind turns. The levels are narrow, have fun not bumping into anything. The pitch mechanic isn't interesting. It's just extra busywork for your fingers and is barely utilized. They could cut it and the game would be better for it. Taking corners the "correct" way, as in breaking or strafing loses you more time than just ramming into the rails and sliding on them. No rebindable controls and all the schemes are questionable, asking of you to press multiple buttons at once for some maneuvers. It's tedious. That's it from the top off my head. It has its moments but they're few and far between. The game doesn't reward or celebrate the player much at all either. There's barely any hype. And the pros are outweighed by the cons. Disappointed.
@MajoradeMayhem4 жыл бұрын
I should note, you can rebind controller buttons freely through Steam's interface. I play with my shoulder buttons swapped around. Keyboard rebinding has no such luck. Redout players typically use AutoHotKey to get around this.
@HighLanderPonyYT4 жыл бұрын
@@MajoradeMayhem Thx for the help, I'll keep that in mind. Still doesn't excuse the devs not putting it in though. And I found rebinding in Big Picture a hassle.
@Wylie2884 жыл бұрын
It is actually much closer to F-Zero than you realize. The real F-Zero. The original. That game didn't forego inertia. A lack of inertia is cheating. A casual drive model is what you like about other games. Thats fine. But its still objectively lesser being much easier. The controls are very precise. Its a computer program. Everything is deterministic. Any and all lack of precision comes from your hands and your hands alone. The AI do not have rubberbanding. They just have the ability to use the same boost you do. They use the same stats and the same rules you do. You can overlap them easily. They are quite awful at the game actually. Lots of boosts are done before jumps, and in every game in existance boosting on the longest straights is always meta. Real life tracks have blind turns. Memorization is just a part of racing. That is the correct way. And sliding on walls is FAR from faster. Anything more than instant contact and you lose more time than you would if you avoid the entire wall. Hitting the wall in the right spot at the right angle is much harder than breaking. Its just added skill gap. Which is good for a racing game.
@ZetoBlackproject3 жыл бұрын
To me the cons to Redout are the non-native rebindable keys (needing third party programs) and the dead multiplayer scene. That's it. Played F-Zero a lot, and a bit of Wipeout. I'd argue Redout is actually better than both. Took me 40h to just get to a point where I was confortable with the controls. And when I was... AI was no more. Trying to get to the leaderboard's top right now. Best of mine is 12th. This game would have a lot more replayability with an active multiplayer. Try to get past the pinball phase, then you'll see a different game.
@Wylie2883 жыл бұрын
@@ZetoBlackproject Multiplayer is rather boring. (its actually active btw. People still play every saturday) But all it really is, is talking with friends and playing redout at the same time. Redout is very much a TT game at its core.
@MrHorst387 жыл бұрын
I can't get the hang of this game's controls, since class 2 I'm losing every race and my opponents drive miles ahead of me. I think they should have made the air brakes control like in wipeout or f-zero, these games control perfectly, unlike redout. This drifting with pulling the right stick in the opposite direction of the turn is counter-intuitive and complicated. In general you shouldn't need to watch tutorials to understand how a game controls. Why they did try to reinvent the wheel with this game's controls is beyond me. I guess this game is just not for me then, even though I love wipeout and f-zero. Unfortunately I can't even refund it anymore. This video was pretty decent, didn't help me much but maybe other people will have more luck with this game.
@MajoradeMayhem7 жыл бұрын
1) Drifting is slower and generally not necessary. 95% of corners you should strafe in the *same* direction as the turn. 2) The early game career isn't especially well balanced in my opinion - the Alaska tracks are highly technical and offputting. You will need to memorise them and choose your loadout wisely. 3) There are different control schemes. If you do not want to use the right stick for strafe, you don't have to! I'd recommend "Classic" control scheme instead. Also, if you have a compatible controller, you can further customise your control scheme through Steam itself.
