I thought that driving my skid steer up the side of the mountain to plow snow down the mountain side trail was a good idea... I was wrong!

Snow provides insulation from frost going deeper. Areas where you plow the snow off will freeze WAY faster. Obviously you can't leave the snow over the road, foam board under the dirt right above the pipe will fix that problem permanently. Foam in general will provide insulation equivalent to 3 feet of dirt per inch of insulation. If your area's frost line is 36" then 1/2 inch foam would fix this. I wouldn't worry and put 1" and never do this again right over the area where the pipe crosses the road. I live in northern New-Brunswick in Canada where the frost line is just over 48". Cheers!

Also, where the dirt is packed down from the drive the frost is driven down,.. therefore the pipe must be deeper under a packed area. Foam board will help. Also, you must always unhook the hose from a frost free hydrant. If you do not do so, the water will not drain out of the pipes down below the frost.

Just as a tip, try weld small stubs/nubs on the chains, we use em here in norway on everything and the studs bite into whatever it got. any offcut small squares or roundbar is perfect. it gives alot better traction than regular chain, remember ice and steel doesnt give any traction, but studs biting into it gives!

I have those for my tractor rears they have been a life changer. I have a set of standard chains for the steers. They don’t work well at all. So much so I haven’t even installed them in the past couple years.

Watching since the beginning when you were forming the "shop" I know you had installed those faucets correctly as most people do not leave proper reservoirs for the water to drain back into a space below the frost line so I knew it had to be somewhere elsewhere underground with all the dirt being moved around. I miss the cold greatly, being stuck way down South, but I do not miss troubleshooting frozen lines, especially when you have no choice but to continue making the rounds taking care of the critters.

What I have done for Frozen Hydrants is use a heat gun (Just for better control) and and the fan blows the hot air down the hydrant opening where the hose usually is (Which you have open) and the heat will move down the hydrant into the lines to thaw out the frozen water. That works quite well. You can hear it coming once it start thawing.

It is interesting: these winter episodes seem to be all about survival and making it through to thaw. Not a complaint - just an observation. It's like all productivity sort of stalls. I can see why he said in the last episode that they have moments of thinking how renting a place in town is preferable to this. I get it.

Driving over it you drove the frost down we bury 4' here and deeper even insulating water lines when crossing a drive depending on traffic and weight 6-7' and we are NW OH near IN/MI. Your Iowa hydrants not sure your bury depth or ground porosity but we cut & wrap 10' to 20' of 4'' plastic tile around the hydrant weep base covered in sand or pea stone because of freezing and use we have even vented drains to atmosphere. They are frost proof not freeze proof hydrants regardless of brand we drill and repair water wells here since 1966 and remember frost goes down before it leaves.

I don't know why you don't wrap that strap around the blade. Then wrap the chain around the tree. Hook it to the strap. And as you raise that strap up, I mean that buck it up boom and all it'll pull you forward enough that as you dry forward and keep raising the bloom up, it'll pull you forward and get you back on the road

I hope you figure it out and share it with us. I can't tell you how many people I referred to your channel to see that gravel-bucket trick... Why not just fab a quick attach mount for the Exc to us the snow plow on it? It would still be a 2 way with the exc up/down and the angle could be off the thumb with a simple switch valve.

...Here in lower Michigan we normailly put water lines 2 - 3 times deeper than the normal frost depth if there is going to be plowing and especially driving over a water line, and even then there can be instances with extreme cold where the frost is driven as deep and 20 feet from regular traffic which drives the frost deeper. Years ago with iron pipe we would hook a welder up at opposite ends of a frozen pipe and use the current to thaw those iron pipes, this practice can be a little sketchy!

You keep messing with the wrong equipment, you're going to hurt yourself. You wouldn't hammer a nail with a screw driver, would you? More along your understanding. You wouldn't use a pair of pliers to loosen a 3" plumbing fitting? No, you'd use a pipe wrench. Sell all those Tonka toys and get yourself a backhoe. This was the main reason I stopped watching you a couple of years ago. You tend to do things dangerously. I have no interest in watching someone get hurt. Bye for now. Be safer, please.
