"I appreciate the fact that you think that I care that much about your opinion." Hahahahahaha I actually did laugh out loud. I love it! My wife, the ever-so-polite half of my marriage puts it this way: "How kind of you to have taken an interest." It's basically a non-confrontational way of saying what you just did. When I hear her say that I have to bite my lip to keep from laughing and usually the person she says it to isn't any wiser to what just happened. It's YOUR home. You make it yours. I have seen on other channels where people offer up criticism where none was asked for. I never understood what makes those folks think they can just chime in all the time. I've been watching this channel for about a year now, since the beginning, and while I don't always agree with your sense of style... it's not my place to criticize. You have a great skill set and a good sense of how to solve problems in clever ways. Your videos and your property development is sometimes elegant to watch, sometimes clumsy, but never dull. Keep 'em comin. I can't wait to watch the place develop. I can't wait to see your kids grow up there. God bless! Keep up the good attitude.

Really like your plan, think you will be glad as kids move off to college. My husband worked through "changes" too. Once I came home from the supplier with a 36" exterior door instead of the 34" I was supposed to pick up (can't explain why I did that???? and he didn't send me back). He just dropped his head and got to it - into an original post beam of our 150 yr old farm house. He is such a great man and so kind. Not to mention a great "jack of all trades" and plumber like yourself. Praying all you homesteaders stay safe as you get set for winter.

I think this is a good idea. By making this building all house and moving the workshop to the other building you'll be more comfortable and able to live up there sooner and your workshop will eventually be much bigger and more capable for doing projects and storing equipment. You know what? Making the family more comfortable by sacrificing the shop for the time being and creating the home first is a kind and fair gesture. I am certain when the time comes the shop you construct will be even better than you first imagined. Your family is sooo close to moving in, I hope! It would be so wonderful if you and Cedar were able to gather the family in your new home for Thanksgiving. Sharing a meal together and experiencing the changing season there will be a choice experience. I will continue to hope and pray for the very best outcome for the entire family. I am so excited for you all! Thank you for sharing your journey of trial and error and unexpected successes. The memories made in the process will be sweet to recount to grandchildren, no doubt!

You and your wife have made the right decision here, in swapping the property build around, I could not understand why you were not building the family home first, but hey it's your home build and nothing to do with me how you choose to do it, so I made no comment on that, but now you have made me happy, because once the now new family home is done, the advantages of that are so very obvious once you are moved in and living on site, for one thing, on hand free labour help, ha ha! You are so lucky to live in a country and state that will allow you so easily to make changes to the exterior design, here in the UK any changes to the exterior would take months to get planning approval, not only that but with your wooden frame build it makes it so very easy to do, one thing though if you will allow me to say, I think I would have just closed up the barn door opening, if that was the only side you could install the wood stove, then I would remove the window, and changed that opening so you could install a sliding patio door, giving you another access/exit point, the now spare window could be installed else ware to allow extra light in, possibly the stair end or kept to use in the shop build maybe, of course if the wood stove could be installed in the other corner, then all you would have had to do is put a sliding patio door in instead of the barn door, and leave the existing window where it is.

Personally, and this is only my opinion of course and from personal experience, I think you should consider finding a place to stick a back door in now before you get the finished walls up because you might regret not putting one in earlier when you find it inconvenient to have to run all the way around the house to get in from the back, especially if you have muddy boots. Much easier to do it now in the framing phase than it is after everything is finished. Might save you some future headaches. Anyway, the build is looking nice, and good luck with the rest of the build.

Great Room + Kitchenette? You could always add a front porch with Gable Roof cover later on. And, you could even put a Master Bedroom on the first floor later on too, and spin it off the Great Room or Kitchenette, e.g. like pouring a 14' x 16' foundation addition. Nevertheless, that's not bad square footage for a family home. I'm glad you decided to go with a two story work shop. Now, you need the extra story for bedrooms. I am excited for the children when they get their bedrooms. They'll be so happy. Keep up the great work.

Just as an aside, I used to live in Maine, where it gets really, really cold. Wood stoves & fireplaces are almost always in the center of the house or as close as possible. The reason is that you really don't want to heat outside walls if possible, and the chimney will radiate heat in the second floor..... A corner is possibly the least desirable place, and having the chimney going through a closet seems like wasting a valuable resource - heat. But if that's your best location, I'm sure it will be OK.
@TheUserid826 жыл бұрын
insulated walls with an air gap between the stove enclosure and the wall and you arn't heating the outside wall as the brick/stone work reflects the heat back in and any that gets absorbed stays in due to the air gap. An intake vent at the floor of the boxed in section and one at the top vented into the room will take that heat and push it into the room. Yes at the top but that is what fans are for. Then again you get a limited amount of heat off a double wall pipe to begin with.
@jackp66 жыл бұрын
I agree it looks logic to me to have the stove in the center...
@BrianBeck6 жыл бұрын
I had thought that as well as I was replacing my sisters heater that had been in the center of the house, When I moved it to under a window the house was less drafty and more comfortable to live in. Read this for more information. physics.stackexchange.com/questions/87731/why-are-radiators-always-placed-under-windows

Its all about the air flow and well insulated walls. Get some fans moving the warm air into the center of the room for even heating and not heating the corner so much.

Truss headed stainless screws make window replacement and changes easy. They also are more controllable so that you don't overtighten. Another plus is that pulling nails on cold vinyl is liable to break the flange at best. I use them in some of the steel roofing installs as well. Going to be nice to have heat in the house for working. Merry Xmas. Take care. Doug
@singleman19866 жыл бұрын
And that's why we install windows with screws. You sure are fortunate to be building in a county that is tolerant of all the changes as you build. Changes can certainly turn into a nightmare in MANY places. All that said, I think you and Cedar made a VERY good decision. With a family the size and dynamics as yours, you are going to need every square foot of that house for quite some time while you finish the main house.
