1984 was such a good draft for the habs. they got Svoboda, Corson, Richer and Roy. all played over 1000 NHL games. that's 4000 games played from 4 drafts picks in the same year, their best "game played from a draft year" on record.

@@chrisbelos2834 They got more games out of their 1987 draft: Cassels, Leclair, Desjardins, and Schneider. Leclair's 967 games was the lowest number among that crew. Even though the rest of their draft that year was a washout, those four guys still played more games than the entire 1998 draft class.

The reason why Robitaille dropped all the way down to #171 was that he couldn't skate. To watch him you'd think he was wading around in a swamp. The Kings finally took him way down the draft and at some point sent him off to Laura Stamm's skating school. He improved his skating but was never very fast, going from glacial to just slow. But his hands were the real deal. He just had that knack of being able to get his stick on the puck and get the puck toward the net.
@yogibearstie10 ай бұрын
It is so much about timing, being in the right place at the right time but also having that finishing knack. It seems like certain players must see things different. Like I see the goalie and shoot around them. Are they seeing empty net spots and hitting them? Corey Perry is another like that where he doesn’t waste opportunities.

The first two picks were born on the same day: October 5, 1965. Shannon forgot to mention the coincidence of Brett being drafted by his Dad’s old team and what that would have been like. 2 of the top 3 are the only players besides Gretzky to score 80+ goals in a season. 3 of the top 4 scored at least 668+ goals.

The 1984 NHL Draft was all about Mario Lemieux - the next "original next Wayne Gretzky" level of player! Teams offered great lands and riches for him (old spoken phrase), but the Penguins held steady and kep there draft, having MOUNTAIN HIGH hopes of that this man would make the Pittsburgh Penguins land on the hockey map - and he would make no one dissapointed as history shows. But still, crazy that Patrick Roy, who would become arguably THE greatest goalie in NHL history was not picked in 1st round.... freakin 51st overall in 3rd round (!) Imagine, Penguins who had 3 picks in 1st round could have picked BOTH ATG men in 1 round PLUS Brett Hull 😲

Something that would make these absolutely fascinating would be do select not based on the player alone, but factor in what the team needed at the time. Lemiux is probably going #1 regardless, but if Jersey (for example) didn't need a goalie why take Roy? Not sure how you could validate team needs at the time or how much time it would take to compile it, but it would proper that extra spice on an already fun video.

Some of the unwritten, in other sports are interesting. In football they do run up the score and while it's usually against lower division teams this years' Orange Bowl with Georgia beating undefeated Florida State 63-3 and doing likewise in the championship game in 2022 beating TCU 65-7 so they do run it up even against good teams. In fact the announcers wonder if there's something wrong if the team doesn't win big, particularly at the college level. In basketball ball I wonder if there is some animosity if a player scores 50+ points and the team loses. It's like Doughty saying some players are only concerned with 'their' stats.

Redrafts are interesting, but it's really just re-ranking the players taken that year. It ignores what teams might have needed, or a particular preference a GM had. For example, if the team needed a defenseman but the GM didn't like US-born players, or if they needed a right winger but didn't want a guy who shot left-handed.
