Part 1 of 2 of the BBC Scotland 'Ex:S' 66th birthday anniversary tribute to Alex Harvey. Apologies for the quality - recovered from an off-air VHS recording which was up in the attic, but may be of interest to some fans who've not seen it before! See also Part 2

The Old Grey Whistle Test recordings of ‘Give My Compliments to the Chef’ and ‘Next’ are beyond belief. Harvey’s performance had me hooked, lined and sinkered at 13 years old ☺️ I’ve loved them ever since

Having grown up in the same town as Ted and Hugh McKenna (and briefly going out with their cousin as a teenager) , I had the wonderful good fortune of meeting Alex in the Ivanhoe Hotel , after one of his many gigs I went to at The Apollo , Glasgow . He was full of knowledge and advice about the music industry . It was truly a wonderful night . RIP, Alex , Ted , and Hugh 🖤

What a memory, after SAHB broke up Alex reformed a band, the drummer, Paul, played in a band at my 21st birthday, my best mate at the time, Mick, became tour manager and called me to say: " we need a roadie and minder". So off I went on a tour of Germany, Plus gigs in London and back to Germany to Nurnberg. Great times I'll never forget.

The first SAHB song I heard was "There's no lights on the Christmas tree mother they;re burning big Louie tonight" after that I was hooked. I had seen Tear Gas several times in Buckhaven Miners Welfare in the late 60's probably and knew that they were a good live band but this took them to a different level. Rip Alex you are sorely missed.

Good ones, check out Vic Chesnutt too, I guess he's not a "rocker" ir you wanna get genre specific, more singer / songwriter, but man his band rocked once in a while. the live version of 'Everything I Say' gets really heavy. And 'Flirted with you all my life' is one of the darkest songs I've ever heard. Also he was in a wheelchair, and still rocked as hard as he could.

Alex Harvey doesn't need any "Hall of Fame" to justify his fame - anyone who ever saw SAHB knew he was unique and above such trivia! Earl's Court 1973 The Master "supported" Slade. Make no mistake - Slade were a a decent band. But they could never equal SAHB. xxxx

Hmmmm. 5:34 HAIR After an off-Broadway debut on October 17, 1967, at Joseph Papp's Public Theater and a subsequent run at the Cheetah nightclub from December 1967 through January 1968, the show opened on Broadway in April 1968 and ran for 1,750 performances. Simultaneous productions in cities across the United States and Europe followed shortly thereafter, including a successful London production that ran for 1,997 performances. It's odd how they jump from Alex supporting The Beatles in Scotland and then Germany, then suddenly jump to 1967. It's 1960 that he opens up for The Beatles (then known by another name) --- that's a 7 year jump in this biography.

There is also an annual one day festival (SahbRock) , currently in its 14th year , held every October . It's current venue is Ivory Blacks in Glasgow .
