I worked in a car repair and service shop for five years. During that time I saw several Prius vehicles come in with 200,000 to 300,000 miles on them and they were in for just oil changes, etc ( normal maintenance services). I was impressed so I now drive a 2009 Prius with 140,000 miles on it.

I have a 2011 prius here in NZ and it's brilliant. I fully agree that they just make so much sense. Practical, efficient and reliable. Mine averages 4.3l per 100km in summer and about 4.8 in winter. Good quality tyres do wonders for the ride quality and handling. I have had mine 2 years and so far have only had to replace the thermostat and clean out the Egr passages in the intake manifold. Both relatively easy Diy fixes. It has more than enough power for hills and overtaking, I even tow a small dinghy on a trailer with mine which it pulls easily.

Had a Prius g2 (2004). Bought it in 2018 with 320k km as "faulty" with allegedly broken ABS unit for 2250 USD, sold in 2021 with 400k km for 1700 USD. ABS pump wasn't faulty, it was a brake pad that got so thin that it felt out, the brake piston has rubbed against the disc to the extent that the brake fluid started leaking. Fixed with original parts for 180 USD. Batteries were exchanged for new (original Toyota) in 2014, so were generally new at that time. I had no issue during the 3 years and 80k km, the car had even original undercarriage, no rust, everything worked just well. My car mechanic couldn't believe it. Except for the brakes, the only 2 things I did on the car was timing chain exchange (later than recommended, just when the engine icon poped on the dash and read the error code) and the shock absorbers, as the original ones were getting too mushy. The car was doing an excellent job - on highway between 130 and 170kmh, average consumption was around 6.0 - 6.5 l, country roads around 5.5, completely jammed city crossing for work around 3.8 - 4.2 l. Why sold? Cause we needed a bigger family car, exchanged it for 2014 Mazda Wagon 6 2.5 Skyactive-G, which I'm absolutely happy with, but probably going to switch it back to Prius, but 3rd gen this time. Reason? My wife's small, unpractical Peugeot sedan 1.6 HDI diesel (301) is getting at it's lifespan edge and needs replacement for something more dependable. So we are considering a VW Golf Variant 7gen alltrack 2.0 tdi 184hp, and this would make need for Mazda obsolete, no need for 2 family vagons. So Golf would take the "family car" role, especially useful on longer trips, and I'd change the Mazda for Prius 3g to be used mainly for commuting to work etc. So thanks a lot for this video review, hope the gen3 will prove similar realiability and durability as gen2 ;-)

The proper name is "power split system". It is not a CVT of any kind. The GEN 2 does have a belt but it only transfers power to another part of the "tranny". The belt was eliminated in GEN 3. Be sure to get rid of the non-synthetic WS ATF ASAP and put in REDLINE D6, a real synthetic.

2011 Toyota Prius Owner here. Battery needs changing every 250,000km as per my Toyota dealer. I had to change mine at 236,000km a while ago. The dealer said that some taxi drivers in the area are swapping their batteries every few years, high hopes for a long life of the car. Search online, some places offer single battery cell swaps for under $100 instead of a full replacement. Mostly in big cities only. Very reliable otherwise

Always wanted a Prius, particularly a 3rd gen Prius which I think is the best-looking version. Unfortunately, they were always out of my price range. With supply chain issues and dealer markups it's gotten even worse in the U.S. Strangely enough, though, you can get third gen Prieye for under 10 grand. I have to admit, I'm very tempted. I like fast cars too (Let's be honest. Everybody loves fast cars.) but I also love reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles. God help me, there may be a Prius in my future.

also consider other toyota hybrids like the corolla and camry, or even sienna if you want a larger car that's in my opinion more practical for ROAD use than an SUV prius prices are too high in my state, so I got a camry hybrid with 100,000 miles for LESS than what a prius would cost with 150,000 or more miles in all honesty, it's more of a work car than anything, but it's got enough power to actually be fun to drive while still getting about 35mpg combined, and 40 if I really feather the throttle (which is unreasonable in most cases since people are bad drivers and tailgate hard here) may not be the case everywhere in the states, but imo the prius kind of is overrated, which is somewhat of a good thing since people who don't know a lot about cars will completely ignore them like they don't get similar MPGs, causing their price to be more negotiable :)

2009 totaled by a drunk driver while parked off road (!) 187,000 miles (300,950 km or so) Another 2009 is still going at 188,000 miles 2010 with 96,500 miles Another 2010 totaled by a teen yacking to her mom at 168,000 miles 2015 Prius v (wagon) with 105,000 miles 2013 Lexus ES 300h with 80,000 miles Are they reliable? YES. Only major problem to date was covered under a recall here in the USA -The 2010 inverter blew a power transistor, which was due to a bad design. Most issues have been things like 12-volt batteries replaced after five years, tires, a water pump, HID headlights failing due to water intrusion. There are three other Toyota hybrids in our extended family, all going strong. Another 2009 got totaled along the way. One of our 2009s blew a capacitor in the circuit board controlling the gas gauge and speedometer. I replaced it myself. That was a pain in the butt, but I saved hundreds by doing so. At 12-13 years old, the batteries in our oldest cars are getting a little tired, and mileage is falling off. But every mile we drive these cars is paying us back, because we have them paid off. Yes, the dated navigation system is ridiculous. The computerized radio in the 2015 Prius v is the worst piece of $#!† electronics I've ever seen (since it reboots itself constantly, at random). But these cars are outstandingly practical in ways that offset any other annoyances.

Just found this vid and i think you have nailed it, as a owner of a 320,000 mile 2012 version i would pretty much agree on your sum up of the prius. The egr and head gasket and also oil burning are all related to low tension piston rings, the rings gum up with age and carbon letting oil bypass, this oil then clogs egr system up which if left will cause overheating and failed head gasket......But easy fix s available .....a good engine oil flush every 3rd oil change has kept my 2 prius's from oil burning and egr system clean.

You should have gotten a cheap $25 Bluetooth scanner and loaded "Dr. Prius" on your phone. It would tell you exactly what is wrong with your battery. Usually age causes high internal resistance. The real fix is to replace the old NiMH battery with lithium ion by installing a "Nexpower" battery. I just put one in my 2007 Prius. I was in an accident-a car cut in front of me on a green arrow. My front bumper and hood are damaged & need to be replaced. There is no structural damage, and the only thing that needs to be repaired in the motor is the AC generator in the radiator. My insurance is saying it’s a total loss. I don’t know what to do. My insurance is offering me money, or I can repurchase it from them and get it repaired myself. It’s mainly cosmetic. Do I take the money or keep the car?

The way the electric motor generator 1 work in conjunction with the internal combustion engine and electric motor generator 2 to produce not only drive and regen, but also offer the petrol engine variable ratio drive to the wheels using nothing more than a fixed planetary gear set, well when you understand how it works, it gets the inner engineer far more excited than any conventional super car, or any modern electric only car. It just does. If nothing elses, the Toyota hybrid system uses it's battery to energize an electric motor (or two) to facilitate the ultimate control over the gear ratio between piston engine output speed to wheel speed, the fact it can be used to recoup energy on de acceleration is just another bonus.

4:00 - "It's aging quite well" - agreed :) 5:00 'It's the go-to car if you don't car about cars" - I disagree. I have a Mercedes and a Lexus. My Prius is my "go-to" car for commuting to work ;)

As a 2012 Prius owner i agreed that the digital display and the dashboard lights in oldschool green 80s 90s color is very dated that’s one of the things I don’t like. Why not make it white? Because than it looks a little more modern. Also you can’t debadge the car on the back to have a clean look. Because the letters are pinned in the 5th door… also very oldschool

It's a such a shame we've never got the Prius plug-in directly available in Australia - they seem like an excellent extension of the Prius concept without having a ridiculously huge and ridiculously expensive EV battery.

Prius Prime due in 2024. My bet is that initial volumes will be so low it will be near zero until 2025. Same price as a Tesla model 3. We were told numerous times the Prius Prime isn’t coming to Australia but the RAV4 Prime and Corolla PHEV are so just order one of those. Except there is SFA information on when they are coming

Thank u very much for the not boring test. I just found u and i like the style. I'm interested maybe in a facelift one. Do they all have no telescope steering? How is the HUD? U talked about an aftermarket Infotainment system with Android Auto, where do i get the frame to fit it? Does it has Blind Spot Monitor?

With the gas prices on the rise, driving a cheap hybrid will make you seem like a smart guy, compared to the stigma of a "guy that does not care for what he drives" these cars has couple of years ago.

First of all - Thank you very much for a proper and fare eye level review. I "liked" you as well. Got a crucial question. So thinking of buying a secondhand 2014 210,000 k"m one. From a dealer so it looks great but - HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MAINTENANCE? BATTERY? OTHER PARTS? appreciate a quick response🙂

Probably a bit late. I have owned 4 different Hybrid vehicles but never had a Gen3 Prius. However I believe at those Km's you should expect at least the next 3 years to be basically trouble free depending on how many Km's you do. So long as it's got a good service history it should be pretty good. I've found the Gen 2's do burn a bit of oil though. So probably should keep an eye on that.

Only 2 facts I know about the Prius is the official plural for a group of Prius as announced by Toyota is Prii and the battery of a Prius has half the amount of power needed to run a London tude train stored in it. Good video guys though even though you've recommended the Prius as a car worth buying I can't see myself ever buying one as my daily drive. Also had a question about your merch when you launch it which is are you going too do bumper sticker as well for it? Have a good weekend guys and look forward too next week's videos.

OK I have a 2012 Toyota Prius that I have to give up because just under 300,000 miles my battery died and I refuse to spend $5000 on it. Now when he tells you what can go wrong mechanically and then tell you it’s not common, I have had all of those problems go wrong with my car in the 11 years that I’ve had them! Still, I love my Prius and I’m buying a new one
